In the future, perhaps the character's gender, more often than not, will be more of an afterthought.Lotion Soronnar wrote...
The irony is that most writers, when asked to wrote a strong woman character, write a "STRONG WOMAN, character", insted of "STRONG CHARACTER, woman"
I hope I live to see that day, man. They did it once--Ellen Ripley was originally a man--and it was glorious.

A quote from one of Patrick Weeke's livejournal entries, which tackled the way in which FemShep was written:
FemShep is not a woman who happens to be an Alliance military officer. She's an Alliance military officer who happens to be a woman. No matter what changes I suggest in the writing room, I can promise that this will never change. Commander Shepard should always be a strong character, a decorated officer who is dedicated to saving the galaxy.
And as a woman and FemShep player, I've never been anything but impressed with how FemShep is written (let's pretend Jacob's romance doesn't exist for this sentence). Likewise, while I don't like Jack, I understand why she is the way she is and find her to be a well-written person. There are certainly writers at BW who do know how to do it right.

I know strong women in ME. Liara, Tali, Miranda, Kasumi, Samara. I could agree that Jack isn't as strong a personality as others since she is unstable, but when ever did Bioware say that she is or isn't? You have an issue with Jack obviously. Well too bad, not all characters are written to suit you alone. Some people liked Jack despite her weaknesses which only made her human. Nothing wrong with that.

Agreed completely. That's why FemShep is my favorite female videogame character.AlphaDormante wrote...

Everyone deals with other people assuming things. I don't assign favoritism to a particular group that has 'had to overcome' because everyone, or nearly everyone has had to overcome stereotypes.

I think she's the favorite of a lot of female gamers, myself included. Hopefully writers taking note of this in the future won't see "THEY WROTE A MAN" when looking at FemShep rather than "THEY WROTE A PERSON". That could go a few dozen shades of horrible
Luckily, Mr. Weekes is a pretty cool guy. Supportive of equal gender representation and doesn't afraid of anything. The post I quoted is here, if any parties are interested. Fair bit of warning, though, LJ got an update today and is now fugly.
*GDIT why do I always spell Weekes' name wrong. I AM SORRY SIR YOU ARE UNDESERVING OF MY FAIL.

When people's perceptions permeate society too deeply, they get in my damn way. And I'm not the only one with that problem. Plus, ignorance leads to conflict, and apathy allows conflict to persist.kojac.ghosper wrote...
Would you rather spend your time as an activist for people who may very well be as ignorant as the ones you've allowed to offend you, or would you rather focus on your own personal identity and say 'to hell with what people assume, if they want to see who I am, they need only look.'
Hence, personal crusades.

Pick a ME character and reverse their gender. What do you think of the quality of their writing now? Are they stronger or weaker? Did your opinion change at all?
