I was wondering how I should build my Engineer, as in, at level 1, what should I prioritize?
I know that some of it may be based on personal preference, but I'd still like to know your opinions.

Do I ignore Charm & Intimidate options early on --or when's the best time? Will I need First Aid early on?
Are there any useless abilities in general that I should know about?

I don't want to miss certain dialogue options or chests through decryption if I don't have it soon enough or something.

Are there any general rule of thumb principles I should know about (e.g. "You should max out Engineer (Passive) before abilities first.")?

Also what's the best bonus power for Engineer in Mass Effect 2? AP Ammo?

My first question for you, do you want to have multiple ME1 playthroughs, or only one?

Depends.

Want to shore up weaknesses?  Reave, since it works well against Barriers.
Want to hack people for the lulz?  Dominate.
A viable alternative to an existing power?  Energy Drain - instead of overheating weapons, it charges your shields.
Ammo?  AP for recruiting Mordin and Garrus, to some extent Jack.  Warp when you are off to Horizon.

Awesome, and I'd recommend you check out this thread for some builds: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/261/index/5628294

I like investing in Decryption, Electronics, Damping and AI Hacking first with Medicine next for at least the first level of Neural Shock for the Therum Krogan encounter (but Kaidan can work too).

And use 6-8 points for either Charm or Intimidate, depending on what missions you go to first.

I try to save Armor and Pistols for last as an engineer, just use cover often and have Ash and or Wrex getting any and all attention.

Do I ignore Charm & Intimidate options early on --or when's the best time? Will I need First Aid early on?

This guide can help you with when you will need those points in the Charm Intimidate Talents: http://masseffect.wi.../Morality_Guide

And First Aid can help but if you will use Ash and Wrex for the majority of the game you don't need many points in the Talent, just enough to get Neural Shock which is awesome on Krogan.

I don't want to miss certain dialogue options or chests through decryption if I don't have it soon enough or something.

you would need a minimum of nine for Decription and Electronics.

And you will earn four points in Charm or Intimidate

Use your talents liberally and get as much cooldown equipment you can find early. I'd ignore investing in pistols early and sticking with your main crowd control talents. Damping is awesome along with Neural Shock.

Happy to help with anymore questions and if I need to clarify.

Edit: spelling

2nd Edit: I forgot about the bonus Talent. If you are fine going with a biotic talent Lift or Singularity can be fun, or even Warp.

And I wouldn't recommend using the Bonus Talent on Shotguns (even if it's gonna be your main weapon, simply don't use points on the pistol Talent) since you really won't need the extra damage or zoom feature to use one effectively.

here's a talent calculator I use also: http://masseffect.ma...Calculator.aspx

Out of those four, would you favor one over the other or?

I don't remember which evolves into which, but would you just go to say Electronics to the point of unlocking Damping, then dumping the rest of your points into that? I don't know what I'm getting at.

Thanks for the quick replies, guys.

I start with Decryption and Electronics, as many as I'm allowed since I remember them being partially grayed out early on, with the early levels, so I spread the points around those four Talents until I hit nine for the Master levels in Sabotage and Overload from Decryption and Electronics.

Another strategy is to ignore one or the other early if you will bring a squadmate for containers. Only one leveled up talent is needed to meet the requirements for unlocking those.

I tend to spam Sabotage, from Decryption, and Damping the most.

With a one point Neural Shock from Medicine (It's like five points from First Aid). You could be in the late teens, leaving the Citadel I think? If you go around completing as many assignments as you can before leaving the station.

I also put a one or two points in the passive at early levels if I don't to use any in Charm or Intimidate early, and you can go Operative instead of Medic for your Engineer sfter completing the Luna assignment.

Lastly, I forgot to mention that First Aid gets pooled together with the score of whole squad. So Liara, Kaidan and Garrus in particular can supplement your First Aid Skill if you want to ignore it completely on Shepard.
