A Fereldan mage finds a life he never expected in the rural splendor of Orlais. Life might not be a grand and sweeping adventure anymore, but he has found a kind of peace he never knew while serving civilization. Every thing is going well until an unexpected guest tries to make an unwelcome point. But the Templar's secret may be more deadly than steel, when the two of them face the truth of a... Runaway Hero.
Also, there is a crone who likes donuts. Confections in general, really.

It's funny how fate can lead a person from a night of drunken misadventure to a discovery of phenomenal proportions. The palimpsest -- hiding the secrets of the greatest magisters beneath the trappings of a Chantry prayer book. That this should come into his hands at such a propitious point in time -- why -- it could almost make Aengus believe in Andraste!

Abstract:
And so she pretended not to see the menace and sullen hatred that slinked silently around the experience of seeing childhood friends robbed of their emotion, left as mindless servants, no longer a danger to those around them and as obedient as any puppet on a string can be. She recognized no reason to protest or even dare to mourn—not unless she wanted the shadow of accusation to blacken the quiet corner where she sat with her head lowered, reading her books and doing exactly as she was told.

Talk of the Harrowing began to trickle down from the elder students, and their words left me sleepless many nights. Like Cyril, I began to see that I too would lack the strength to survive the Harrowing. To fail in the Fade was to be made an Abomination, to forgo the Harrowing was to submit to becoming Tranquil. I found each end as abhorrent as the other, and yet I could find no alternative, no way out, no freedom from my path.
And then I found the Book.

Glint. Gleam. Fade. Silver armor shines in the distance,
always coming, always there. She has no where left to go, and no more strength
to aid her flight. With the templars barreling down on her, an apostate takes
her final moments to reflect upon the world and on her life, her words a bitter
glimpse into what it means to be a mage in Ferelden.

Every now and then a hero is born who would clear a room of the strongest opponents he could find, or track a criminal with almost no leads at all. This is the story of one Gareth Dower, Templar in training. The young knight had been quickly accepted into the Templar Order after rescuing the Grand Cleric of Ferelden from an assassination attempt and now sat outside the gates of Denerim waiting for the Knight-Commander. Today he would play part in a small team of Templars lead by Knight-Commander Michiel, on a hunt for one of the most elusive apostates in Ferelden.

On the nature of possession.
"Few ever allow themselves to realise this; if it were so simple as that one word, perhaps only the Templars would fear the possession of a mage."

She'd been watching him for weeks now.
He wasn't a typical refugee; she'd spotted that straight off. He had the defeated air, the hunched shoulders, the listless gaze they all shared. But there was something more, a nervous air the others didn't have. As if whatever he'd fled from had followed him ... or was already here, waiting.
And she was pretty sure it wasn't the Blight or the darkspawn he'd been fleeing.
So when the rumours had spread through Darktown, she'd known what it was that caused him to start at shadows. The same things she feared herself.

It’s not so bad, really, when you can’t remember having known anything else. A glimpse into the life of a girl who doesn’t learn to fight until it is too late to win.

How far would you go to keep a promise? Blayden’s mother had been an apostate and his father Redcliffe soldier. His mother taught him how to control and use his powers while his father trained him to be a soldier. Since he had been taught to fight as warrior, he rarely used his powers which allowed him fit in easily and hide in plain sight. Even with the fall of the Ferelden Chantry he would have been fine if it wasn’t for one act of kindness, one promise that was now going to be his undoing.

"A soldier will fight long and hard for a bit of colored ribbon." - Napolean Bonaparte
As the Mage-Templar wars heats up both sides suffer deaths and casualties. Each has tactics getting more gruesome and brutal by the day. Both sides yelling for the Maker to favor them for their cause is righteous. With all this noise it is hard to stop and listen, but it is not so hard to hear the other side's tale on a long walk to Tranquility as one templar finds out.
