My challenge submission is "Riding Nightmares"

In the chaos between the barbarian armies of Andraste's March and the Blight-weakened Imperial forces, there are more ways to sap an empire than just killing soldiers. Kavvi and Gise are escorting freed slaves south and away from the fighting, and any Imperial bounty hunters that may chase them.  And there are hunters of both escaped slaves and those who shelter them.

Excerpt from A New Path:

«I told you I’m looking for someone. ‘Looking’ is perhaps not the right word. I’m hunting, and the person I’m hunting is, as most of you undoubtedly have guessed, a very dangerous mage. An apostate. A man who has killed more people than all of us in this tavern tonight. A man so driven by his thirst for might and power that he will stop at nothing to achieve it. He knows no mercy nor compassion, only power and blood. I might very well be hunting my own death.»

Just finished mine, called 'Broken Order'.

As soon as Altan left the building, he followed the road out to the
cages so as to find the apostate he sought. He had done these hunts
before, finding rogue mages and maleficar who had fled the Circle and
bringing them to justice.

Before long, Altan came to a row of refugees who sat against a
wooden fence leading out of the village. Finally he came upon her,
just as his description declared. An Elf woman, shoulder length
auburn hair and hairline tattoo to match.

I stare out from my cell into the hallway of my prison. Apprentices scurry about like
lost mice carrying tomes and parchment to and from their destinations. Many are
young and eager; the prospect of knowledge has not yet dulled with the
monotonous excursions of a day to day existence that is the Circle. I once had
a dream, to one day be called First Enchanter. To one day show my power to the
next generation and help teach them to control theirs. Did I achieve my goal?

 Manon Sees the Golem

When the White Spire's Phylactery Chamber is destroyed, the apprentices in the Circle at Val Royeaux find themselves implicated in the events of a mage revolution that's barely begun. And Manon, a young mage who's only just witnessed the death of a friend, catches sight of a golem leaving the tower.

Good luck to all, and thank you for the opportunity!

Theron's Pride

Dother only laughed at the would-be hero, conjuring lightening for his attack. With
several blasts scorching the ground around Theron, one finally connected with
the center of his chest. The force of the blast sent Theron flying into the
wall of the great hall, relieving him of his sword and shield. Lying on the
ground Theron was defenceless, and the Dother knew it. Grabbing him by the neck
and raising him up to eye level, the Dother looked him deep in the eyes and
asked if he had any last words.

"I can't do that my dear," a long snake like tongue skims her cheek,"my desire for you, it's just too great."
Her breathe running short, unable to move, tears begin the stream down her face as her vision begins to narrow.

Then she fell to the ground gasping for air, her lungs burning. Sitting up she watches a Desire demon's head roll toward

her, eyes lifeless, leaking dark blood, dissipating into purple smoke then nothing. Looking to find the source of her new

freedom, and all she saw was a dragon flying off into the horizon.

My plan was simple: evade the templars for as long as I could. Though, I soon found out, it was easier said than done. My mother warned me from the start. She told me that I wouldn’t last long and that I was better off joining the Circle. I didn’t listen, but I didn’t want to.
I must have lasted a week or more before I realized I couldn’t do it. I collapsed right outside a cave. Unable to move, I stayed on the dusty, cold ground and breathed deeply. “I must..go on..” I huffed out, desperate to continue on the hopes of being free.
I stood. But, I didn’t make it far. Not four feet from where I had just lain, I collapsed again; this time blacking out completely from pure exhaustion.

An apprentice has been haunted her whole life. She hopes the Rite will ease her suffering. The story of Isla the Bloody, who thought the voices were Fade demons. Set before the Fifth Blight.

(Based on the theory that the Rite of Tranquility is the same as a lobotomy, and that it might not have the desired effects if the mage doesn't have the right mindset.)
