The effects of solemn captivity on a mage are complex and hard to describe.

To constantly acknowledge the illusion of peace within a structured, repetitive lifestyle and yet wonder about the life potentially outside of the Tower.

A small excerpt:

I cannot ever leave.
Mentally, physically, and emotionally, this tower is more than the mere shackles; it is the voice, the constant reminder, that this is your past, present, and future.
Some would wonder why I haven’t fled yet. We all whisper about it, like a childish game. We ruminate about those opportune moments to stake our ideals firmly into the ground and leave in a burst of true passion – thus inspiring and stirring the hearts of those fortunate enough to witness it.
But these are just whispers and fantasies. We all convince ourselves that this tower is the one protection from those not eager to accept us Out There.

Title: Oxymoron

A rather silly look in how a mage is manipulated by powers he doesn't even see into doing their bidding. As our poor hero Jonah Freeger attempts to free some mages, he accidentally releases a
sect of bloodmages. This coupled by his talent screw things up might make things hard.

Ugh, I know it's actually slightly past midnight but I did get my story in just in time. Well, even if it doesn't count here's the synopsis anyway:

Title – The Escape

Kaelik Lorin is a Templar who is asked to investigate his secret lover on the charge of being a Maleificar. Unable to stand setting up a woman he knows is innocent he instead decides to help her escape. There may, however, truly be darker forces at work…

My story, entitled "Dragon Age: Blighted Roads," follows an unnamed man and his son Bastion (both apostates) fleeing pursuing Templars in the Brecilian Forest. Formerly living in Gwaren, the man is forced to flee with his son after his wife is killed in an accidental house fire. Traveling for days, the man's resolve is tested as he encounters three Templars and is forced to protect his son at all costs.

Marquis Wakeman had grown tired of the way mages were being treated in Kirkwall, so he created an Urban Legend of a Spirit of Mercy that helps apostate mages when they need help from the circle without being confined to it.  His latest request proves to be a bit too much for him, as it recalls regretable memories of his dead wife.

“I find it odd that the world is such a cruel place, we have everything we could ever want and yet we find reasons to fight, my sole existence in this world is stem the tide of evil, to stop every self righteous idiot that crosses my path; I am the harbinger of justice, I am the exile; I am Rathius.” –Rathius The Immortal

The tale of a confused Templar that meets an apostate that is as self righteous as the chantry

Dragon Age: The Amulet of False Gods

Draconus, a scientist and mage from Tevinter is researching old scrolls found in the Deep Roads when he comes across a peculiar one telling the tale of an amulet that bestows great power. As his research in the Fade carries on, he begins to have strange dreams, and before long he finds himself in possession of that very amulet. As he tries desperately to remove it, he begins having blackouts and waking up in strange locations. Visions of horrific deeds committed by his hands plague his dreams, and before long word reaches Vigil's Keep as these reports begin to surface near Ferelden. A group of Grey Wardens led by Nathaniel Howe is dispatched to deal with this, because only the Wardens know the true nature of the amulet and what it really contains.

I only found out about this challenge today (thanks, Twitter!) at about 2:00 p.m. pst. Decided to give it a try. Came up with the concept, wrote, edited, polished and submitted exactly 2,500 words. I have not had such a rush writing like that since college!

Best of luck, everyone!

(Sorry for the multiple postings.)
