Trust:

If you are not trusted by those around you, you cannot expect them to follow, even if the truth is right in front of them. These preconceptions have now brought the world to where it is now.

Only by seeing the world from a different perspective, will you be able to understand.

[Blew the dust off my poor, forgotten BSN account to enter - never posted before, here's to being a newb again. Thanks for the contest, folks, and enjoy all the quality entries!]

Horses, and the Smell of Snow

A brief window into the life of
Martin, a troubled, self-centered apprentice in the Gallows of Kirkwall: unable
to properly deal with his mounting discontent, he reaches out awkwardly to a
friend, who proves just as unable to help him. As Martin soon learns, the walls
have ears here in the Gallows, and even a whimper for help can be twisted
gently into a cry for rebellion. Highlights the growing paranoia and increasingly
strict policy of mage control in the Gallows just before the events of DA2.

Since running away from the abominations that threatened Ferelden’s Circle, Elara has never forgiven herself for allowing her friends to die, but when she believes templars have come to collect her, the choice to return to the Circle is not as simple as she once thought, not in the face of her new calling...

As We Are

Ser Thrask lost his daughter, Olivia, twice. Once to the Gallows,
and once to the demons. As the situation in Kirkwall worsens, he forges
an unlikely friendship with the erstwhile apostate, Grace. One quiet
evening on the Wounded Coast, he tells her of his past.

Well. Just found this contest lying around in a post on the dragonage
wikia so thought I'd give it a try. Here's my synopsis for my entry:
Fright.

Anya Froststead, a talented young elven mage Apprentice has fled with a large group of other mages from the Starkhaven Circle. She finds herself in difficult times as they're on the run from large groups of Templars anywhere they go. Now she finds herself in a sanctuary on the coast of the Free Marches, hidden from the outside world. But will the peace last or will she be consumed by her fear forever?

From the other thread:

Blood of the pure

"Guyn fears the Harrowing like the world fears the Darkspawn, but the hand of Enchanter Egret calms her fears.
He promises her to guide her overcome her fears; he promises her success and greatness.
The Harrowing, said Enchanter Egret, is like a trial of love. If you pass, then love isn’t just a word and a mage isn’t just a jester doing tricks for fools.
But the Fade, the Fade isn’t a place for neither pretty words nor promises."

Entry sent!

Whispers

The voices that hover on the edges of hearing whisper to us in the night.  In that instant between day and night, that moment when we are neither awake nor asleep, we are vulnerable. Prey to dreams of temptation and duty, conscience and fear. And underneath, a boiling, bubbling, yearning desire to be free.[/b]

"Promise"

Abstract:

“Keep him close and he will betray you. Each time worse than the last.” When Flemeth spoke those words to Prince Maric Theirin about his companion Loghain Mac Tir, little did she know she would come to regret them. On that night in the forest, she extracted a promise from the future king, and set into motion a plan that would take more than thirty years to come full circle. And now, on the eve of it's completion, those words spoken about Loghain might have destroyed everything for which she had worked all these years.

(Since the codex lists Flemeth's class as "Mage," I'm assuming writing a story from her perspective is well within the rules. Also, I submitted my story before seeing the addendum to the rules that nothing was to be used from official DA works. The sentence quoted above is from "The Stolen Throne" by David Gaider, and I in no way claim it as mine! I did think it was a good hook upon which to hang my story, and since I interpreted "understanding and respect for Intellectual Property" as meaning that we should make reference to established things, it never occurred to me that we couldn't quote selectively from the games/books/etc. I'm pretty sure, though, that this is the only actual quote that I pulled from anywhere. Hopefully, that won't disqualify me from the contest). Thanks! :)

“Heir Apparent” By Moe Wise

Early Year 9:36 Dragon

Is an original Dragon Age inspired short story about a Templar Lt. stationed at a small post called “Maker’s Watch” on the island group of Randel’s Reach.

He has a new recruit joining him in a busy port community who have their own local superstitions compounded by fear of news coming from Kirkwall. This story is a rich depiction of a single day in the life of a Templar who has a deep history with the islands and it’s people. This is a personal story and mystery less the struggle of physical conflict as it is of xenophobia and understanding duty when duty comes with internal conflict. This sleepy routine is inspired by nightmares both real and better left laying.

Taking full advantage of the 2500 limit-this story has a nice twist and written by an experienced writer and fine artist.

Vigilance

With the thirst for blood and sense of obligation driving them, the Templars that once only scrutinized the mages now hunts them down. The Mages, who only wished the freedom of choice and acts, were now far more dangerous with fear oppressing them. As a result, a grand Mage-Hunt has been let loose on Thedas.

The story is told from the perspective of an apprentice mage named Lea Vance. After being taken into custody by a group of fugitive mages in Ostwick, she experiences the immoral ways of Mages and Templars alike with her own eyes.

 Orphans:

Darktown was about the worst assignment that a Templar could get in Kirkwall, but that was the point.

Officially, Ser Adin was tasked with finding the apostate healer who the Order knew to have been operating in the undercity for the last six years.

However, Adin understood why he really had been ordered to try and track down an apostate in Darktown by himself, he was being punished.

Prelation

In hindsight, I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn't what I'm facing right now. This was supposed to be my first, real assignment as a Templar, tracking and killing a dangerous apostate, but once we defeated him, as I lifted my sword for the final blow, something happened that changed everything. All of a sudden I'm faced with an impossible choice. My whole life has led up to this moment, but how could I possibly have prepared for anything like this?

ALLUVIAL SOLACE

By Trynnity

Word Count: 2471

My name is Anieran. I am an elven male. Templars brought me to Ferelden’s Tower at a young age. I have no memories prior to this.

I discovered early, I was not like the others. The Dalish believe I am a Somniari, what they call a Dreamer; one who can enter the Fade at will and change things as they desire, changes that can also be brought into the natural realm, but I believe there is much more.

I am determined to find out who I am, and the reason behind my uncommon gifts.

My Maker

Mahiel the Devourer. My master, and my maker. Though he was known for his cruelty, the mage - the man I knew - was not always so full of hate. I knew he wanted happiness - I could see such desires in his weary gaze. He wanted something that had been robbed from him long ago. If anything, I would provide him comfort and sanctuary where his troubled spirit could not find elsewhere. I did not always belong to him, though. The day I met him was the milestone of my beginning: a well-remembered poison that still sears my blood.

Magic exists to serve man, and never to rule over him.

She put her finger over those words and studies them for a while, these words display themselves elegantly with faded black ink written on a piece of an old parchment that smells like dust.

These words are familiar; she can almost see the old senior Mage standing over her and repeat those lines to her again and again when she was first brought to the Circle.

Back than these words mean little to her, so little in fact she never really give it much thought.

How does something like magic rule over man?

The Chance

From a grievous wrong came something right.
All Straya ever wanted was a family,
but when that dream was within her grasp
she remembered the chantry's stance.
Would they cow her, or would she fight?
This was Straya's chance.

Extract from my entry 'Ripple Effect' ....

-----

“No!” Lainadan snarled. “No! I hope he’s dead. That would be a merciful end compared to enduring what those bastards would do to him.”

“Is that what you truly believe?”

“Yes!” The rogue snapped, once again.

“Then…” Locien trailed off briefly, nervously raising a hand to rest upon the rogue’s. “Then slit my throat and be done with it. Better to be killed by a friend then slain by a Templar.”

----

Hope you guys like it! Think I stuck to the brief pretty much.

Last Hope

"What life could I have when I've come from this?" Kane whispered, watching Kirkwall drift farther away. "I know it isn't what we had in mind, but if there's a war, I want to fight for the mages who still have a chance at what we've lost. The templars need to hear our message. We are not their prisoners."

No Regrets

He has served the Templar Order with faith and dedication his entire life, content to serve in the Tower of the Circle of Magi in Fereldan.  Yet, in one long night of chaos, destruction, and pain, one templar is forced to come face to face with the demons of his past, present, and future.  Only time will tell if he will be able to conquer them, or succumb to their poisonous whispers...

Penitence

You first noticed when you were patrolling the gallows. There was something you couldn’t define. Something surging through your body, making your fingertips tingle, making your pace more forceful, making your lips widen in a cold smile.
It happened when the mages averted their gazes, shied away and every step of you made them retreat, pressing themselves even closer to the wall.
Like an animal on the prowl. Like a beast on the hunt.
Wasn’t it mind blowing?
This overwhelming sense of power?
You noticed, right?
You were becoming like them.

- - - - -

I hope you have fun with my story. It's solely based on the games DA:O, DA:A and DA2 and not the books.

Walking the thin line

Jon stares down a
road of white plates, glittering in the evening sun. He's all alone, those plates lead straight into the
horizon. There are no trees, no flowers, no grass, no mountains. Only a plane, stretching into all directions. A great vastness unfolds in front of Jon's eyes.

Where in the maker's name am I? Doesn't seem like a mission with a real
goal... I wonder where I'll end up.

---
Alright, here we go. My story is based on my interpretation of Circles of Magi, mages and templars. But it's not literally based on any of the games, neither on the books. Kind of a independent story of some "normal" mage and his "usual" troubles somewhere in Ferelden. And some question every mage should ask him/herself...
