Theory & Practice

While hunting an apostate mage in the Korcari Wilds, Knight-Lieutenant Siobhán and the templar Guillaume seek shelter with Christophe, a freeholder and recluse. In exchange for a roof and a hot meal, he asks only that Siobhán entertain him with conversation during dinner. This simple conversation quickly turns dangerous as Siobhán begins to question the motivations of her host. “Theory & Practice” is a story about what happens when doubt inspires action, and what it truly means to become an abomination.

Wow, there looks to be a lot of great stories out there. Hope mine can stack up to the rest.
This is my back of the book kind of synopsis:
Dark Beginnings...

Before my rage was what it was I traveled and fought alongside my friends. My closest friends became my reason to fight, but when you throw in love, war and betrayal goals and objectives seem to haze away from view. This is my story on how I came to fight for revenge and how I came about my search for peace and redemption. With my entire reason for revolution extinguished I seek a new path, and this is how I came about beginning my path.
________________________________________________________________
It should be interesting to see how I do on this and I wish the rest of you luck as well.

Everyone seems to be doing their best with this writing challenge! Well, it will be a challenge for the community team for sure. I wish you all the best of luck. Here is the intro to my story:

Annulment

The corridors of the tower seemed to get longer every day he walked through them. Today seemed to be the worst of them though. Knight-Captain Kyle needed to hurry to the Knight-Commander, but he feared the consequences of his actions.
"This will be hard." he thought, "No matter how it will go people are going to suffer..." He sighed. How could your world turn upside down in such a short time? It seemed ages ago since the 'incident' with the mage Ynzer, but it was only a few months ago.

This is the Nevarran Circle. The year is 83 Glory.

Title: Faith, Betrayed
Word Count: 2,499
Author: dr_ow

The war between mages and templars began only a few months ago. A system that has been in place for ages is on the verge of collapse. Faced with the prospect of his entire world being overturned, a senior templar looks back on his first Harrowing, reflecting on the way mages have been treated for centuries, and what a single event did to change his outlook forever.

My story contains a brief excerpt from the Chant of Light, which belongs entirely to Bioware and the Dragon Age Team. I am in no way attempting to plagiarize or claim the passage as
my own.

Whoa, I was getting worried I wouldn't finish this before the deadline.

Anyway, here are the details of my story:

Title: Life Isn't a Story
Word Count: 2,442 (including title)
Summary: Relationships are never easy, and relationships for a templar are even less so. Trapped in the Fereldan Circle Tower as it is overrun by blood mages, demons and abominations, Ser Astrid reflects on the last couple of years of her life, as well as the man she has shared them with.

So, yeah. Good luck to everyone else. Oh, and thanks to Bioware for this awesome opportunity.

 Here's mine:

Title: A game of cat and mouse

Extract

It’s around the second of Kingsway when he first plays the game.

Of course, Cayden doesn’t know the exact date for sure. They’ve been travelling a lot – hopping from town to town, phylactery in hand. One thing he’s learned from all this is that it’s easier to loose track of time than you might think.

He and Monroe have been hunting the apostate for some time when it happens . They’ve been playing the game for a while. Any other templar would have given up by now, Cayden had groaned to himself a few hours ago. Other men, thrown into this situation would have surrendered, perhaps with a defeated sigh and a grumble. But, no – not Monroe. Not his partner. He was determined to pounce on the rodent. Determined to win.

Title:  Chaff in the Wind

Synopsis:  The Maker's Gift can heal, and It can tear a family apart.

Excerpt:
His parents had been so proud when he announced his wish to become a templar that it hurt… hurt because their pride was everything that their response to Emmy’s magic was not.  Emeline… Father forbade her name to be spoken, but still her presence lingered in the house gone dead and silent.  It dwelled in every swing of his sword as he trained.  It endured in every vow he took.  And now I’m here, and I’ve found her at last.

Wicked  Are The Corrupt

He threw the sword down on the Commander’s desk, causing much of the
oak to split and crack. She looked on, waiting, though he continued.
“We must take action! We are the Maker’s holy army! We are to
exact his justice whilst his gaze is turned from us- this is our
charge! And what is keeping us from our responsibility? Those asinine
fools who have grown weak from complacency, hiding behind their
veneer of ‘peace’. Peace gives us nothing."

Title: Jinx
Word Count: 2499 (after a lot of editing!)
Setting: Kirkwall, coinciding with the second and third acts of Dragon Age 2.

Jacob "Jinx" Caldwell is a circle apprentice in Kirkwall who just happens to be doomed. Since the day he was brought to the Gallows he has never successfully cast a spell, and everyone knows that his future has little in store but the rite of tranquility.

The inevitable is coming, and Jinx is going to make the best of the time he has. For him that means making mischief and stealing what pleasures he can. There is nothing to lose.

The Tower Mouse

General: This tower is loosely based on the Ferelden Circle of Magi at Lake Calenhad but is never specifically called as such; nor is the First Enchanter or Knight-Commander named.
Liam and Samora are two unlikely souls drawn together: one is a rebel and the other quiet and obedient. They find peace and acceptance in each other, in their uncertain world, a peace they have never known before.
But could it last?
Word count: exactly 2500. Seriously had issues staying within this word count!

Tears of the Maker

“My mother always told me that rain is the tears of the Maker.  Sometimes rain is refreshing and sweet, and
that is when the Maker cries for joy at the beauty of his work; sometimes rain is bleak and grey, and that is when the Maker weeps for his fallen children.
The moment that it began to rain upon the fields at Ostagar, I knew that we were lost.”

Corrin had wanted to take the vows of a Holy Brother, but instead the Maker saw fit to make him a mage, and lead him to Ostagar.

(My idea ended up being much longer than 2500 words, so this is kind of part 1 of 2, or possibly 3)

 Pretension

A mage takes a journey into the Fade, and she isn't there to enjoy the ethereal world around her.  Someone is waiting for her, someone she is eager to meet.  The knowledge afforded to her by the Circle of Magi is not enough to satiate her thirst for power, and the new acquaintance waiting for her could show her things she won't find anywhere else - if she's bold enough to ask for them.

Prison of Light

Amelia is an Orlesian apprentice who finds herself transferred to the Circle Tower in Ferelden. She barely speaks the language, the food is terrible, and she can find little to recommend the country— that is until she meets Connor Guerrin, a boy just dangerous enough to be exciting.

Safe Haven
Word Count: 2,499

A knock on the door in the dead of night never bodes well, especially in a house full of apostate mages. But for Malcolm Hawke, a desperate late-night summons might just grant him what he's sought for so long: a place where his beloved Leandra and their children--even his magically gifted daughter and eldest son--can live in peace and safety, free from the Circle.

 A Mage is Never Free

The life of an apostate was never one of leisure as there were no safe havens. It was always every man for himself and a few extra coppers in their pocket was enough of an incentive to turn his kind in. Unless they had need enough or were just as much of a criminal as he was. Aiden never asked for that kind of life. He was tired of running and so he let the darkness take him.

The Lost Circle

Word Count: 2474

The Templars split from the Chantry; adherents follow their leaders commands and others find slaughter unacceptable. Senior Enchanter Petra must face the knowledge that the Templars will kill the mages. When Tavish forces the issues and demands the circle be annulled, Hadley makes a choice and Petra’s fate hangs in the balance.

Edit: Duh, this is what I get for sending in something at 4 am! Community Mods: Please replace the first email with the second, sent the wrong file in. :(

 The Fade Gate - Synopsis

The Fist of the Maker, a small unit of Templars exceptionally talented in the art of dispelling magic, are given an assignment by an apprehensive Lord Seeker.  The group finds that the task is the most challenging they have encountered so far, as the odd boy and frail old man turn out to be far more than just another two powerful apostates.

Not all mages fled to Andoral’s Reach. Some preferred to take their chance elsewhere. There have always been apostates. Some only want a peaceful existence with their families, others lived as solitary hermits isolated from the world, but others exploited their power, offering their services to whoever would give the most in return. In Orlais’ civil war, both sides will recruit whoever they can to help give them an edge in the battle for power. With so many demands on the templars’ resources and their attention focussed in the north of the empire, who will safeguard the people now?

Verba Vinctus

The fate of the land depends on the ability of a Man to overcome distrust, and of a Mage, to convince his captors that the real threat lay elsewhere.

When a Maleficar speaks, A Teyrn listens and changes the course of history by doing so.

A Templar's Shift

He wasn't a friend, exactly. He couldn't be, as Liam was a mage, and they had never spoken a word to one another. He wasn't even a particularly impressive mage, either. Clement doubted Liam could work up a spark while wearing a velvet suit and petting a roomful of cats. But Clement had to admit that his guard duty would not be the same without him.

Blessed Are the Peacekeepers

Benedict believes in the Maker, and that his creator has a purpose for him. He accepts his gifts, both mundane and frightening, and strives to meet that purpose. Throughout, his faith sustains him, but even a devout man can entertain doubt and fear.
