THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS
I'm a man which you can see in the corner of the bar.
Some call me "night ranger" but I'm a mercenary.
I'm just a simple man who drinks much and lives life the way he wants to.
It's sad that I'm the one to bring this country
out of **** in which it has been trown to

A Different Composition

While many mages despair of their mundane lives in the Tower, Alexa Mooney wouldn't want to be anywhere else.  It's the only life she's ever known.  But that all changes one day when her best friend's sister reveals she's pregnant, taking Alexa away from the Tower to places she never thought she'd ever go.

Defection

The Templar Order had become a stranger to him. The violence that erupted throughout the spire had devasted his beliefs, destroyed the trust he held in the order's conformity.

Templars were supposed to protect the mages, but, who was going to protect the mages from the Order? A simple moment that changes the life of those who witnessed the Templars fall.

Good luck to everyone :)

~Last Strands of Childhood~

I didn’t say it to him, but somehow I had always known I was different. Try as I might, I could never be carefree like the other children; I always had a weight on my shoulders. After another awkward pause, he added, “If I could take it all away and make you normal again…I would.”

I kept studying the spider. If it had the chance to be something else, would it take it? Would it lose the power to craft so much from strands of its own creation just to be something less feared? I had my doubts.

Darkspawn Emissary Abomination

Word count:2500

Abstract:
"What has this maleficar done ? Does it have any relevance to why these other templars disappeared?"

Knight Commander Earik explained, "The maleficar in question is a blood mage named Zyrea. She has been known to have demons forcibly possess people and become abominations. Recently she has started experimenting on darkspawn , and if she has had a success this would be disastrous. Especially since it can only be speculated about how powerful an abomination that carries the taint can be. I fear that the previous templars I have sent are either dead or enslaved to this blood mage."

Withdraw:

The old one cups his face with a too-tight hand and talons sinking into his chin. “Now do you realize you shouldn’t have mocked us?” she rasps, spittle flying into his eyes. “Now do you realize you should have feared us?”
He never did. He always had.
“Nod,” she tells him. His muscles are too weak to fight against her vicelike grip. “Nod!” she shouts again, slapping him with a palm sizzling with lightning.
His fear of pain overrides his fear of death, need for lyrium, need for food, desire for death.
Maker damn him, he nods.

Title: Powerless
Author: Scary Lady
Word Count: 2500
Summary:

For six generations the Laurentius family bred true; mage marrying mage to create a line of powerful Magisters. In Tevinter high society, if one is not a mage, then one is a liability, at the mercy of predatory Magisters and their… pets.

At fifteen, Livia Laurentius - daughter of Magister Lucretius and his powerful wife Cornelia - has demonstrated not a single spark of magic. Her future hangs in the balance; her parents are a hairsbreadth from sending her to Orlais for her own safety.

Lucretius sees no alternative, but Cornelia has an audacious idea.

It’s time for drastic measures.

In a series of dreams within dreams, she identifies the danger and rejects it. She wakes a final time, declaring her victory, only to be made Tranquil anyway.

Simple Pleasures

As a mage of the Ferelden Circle, Artha knows never to expect joy to simply fall into her lap. Even the tiniest sliver must be actively sought – and sometimes, like now, it must be won.

When nothing is yours, not even your life, there is no prize so small that it isn’t worth fighting for.

Three Days Prior

Abstract:
I sat there all alone, the cold midnight air chilling me to
the bone. My back leaned against the unforgiving wall of the Chantry as I
fought hard to not topple over. My blonde hair was matted to my cheek with my
own blood. More blood soaked my armor and my sword, it pooled frantically
beneath me. I looked towards the nightmare sky, the moon sneered down at me. The
Maker, Andraste, not even the stars in the sky could help me. I was in utter
shock of what I had done. I closed my eyes tightly and I wept.

Abstract Word Count: 100

Good luck everyone. :)

Remembering

Bend but never break.

This is the way of the bow. Natani remembered it through a fog, a dream
that slipped through her fingers in the morning light. It had once meant so much
more to her than it did now. The Tower tried to make her forget. For so
long she held on to what little she had left, hoarding it like a
starving man does his last meal. Her mother had begged her not to forget.

But she had.

Perhaps all she had left was a prayer for home.

Perhaps home needed to find her.

Na Mortius Lerno Libertas

"You were a magister, you knife-eared traitor!”

It was too much. Tathera’s paws skidded on the grass as he rounded, claws scoring lines in the dirt. He sprang back up into elvhen form and hissed, “Was. I was a magister, and never again, shem! There is no place in your world for mages with a scrap of conscience. Beyond the Imperium we are slaves and criminals, within we must vie with one another for dominance and become monsters to survive! I didn’t leave Minrathous with the intent of joining the Dalish, I did it to be free.”

Title:  Broken
Author: Noir_Skye
[Word Count: 1841

Abstract:

Ranielle knew their talk would be quite different. A templar’s blood was used for blood magic. What concerned her most was would he still want her. She wiped her brow without realizing the metal left marked on her. No.  The lost of his arm was her main concern. Sweat rolled down her cheeks.  It was her duty to inform the Knight-Commander of this, but she wouldn’t mentioned it unless asked directly. Would he keep her secret as well?

Good luck to everyone who entered.

 Benedictions

“... I saw the Black City,
its towers forever stain’d, its gates forever shut. Heaven has been filled with
silence, I knew then, and crossed my heart with shame.”

The congregation murmured assent as the
verse ended with heads bowed before they looked up at the Revered Mother. She
gazed around the room, eyes stern and cold. “Andraste saw what the Magisters
had done, and she was sickened,” she said, clutching the lectern with white
knuckles. “Hear her words, and be sickened also. The Magisters twice brought
down the wrath of the Maker to his children, once when they betrayed Him by
seeking to usurp His throne, and again when they betrayed His beloved Bride.
She was our salvation, and she was murdered by ma-by Magisters.” Her error was
no mistake; every person in that room, mage, Templar, sister, and even Tranquil
heard mage where she meant it. Cathal dug his fingernails into his bare
wrists, praying to the Maker that this vicious **** would be struck mute.

What I Want

Templars. Skilled at arms. Stout of heart. Resolute in faith. Unwavering in their duty. At least, that's what the stories say about them. But the life of a Templar is as filled with trials and doubts as any man's, and not all Templars get to choose the life they lead. This is one such story...

And no, this story is NOT about Alistair. ;)

Word Count: Precisely 2500. Damn, I hate word limits. [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/crying.png[/smilie]

Title: Reflections in the Rain
Abstract:

Lani dimly registered the creaks of metal armor, of a steel blade sliding from its sheath. Only her mother's words echoed in her mind as she stared at the damp remaining ashes of a manifested rage demon. Freezing rain mingled with the warm blood splattered on her face, washing away the tears she simply could not hide.

The rumors had been true.

"You, girl. Are you the daughter?"

No title yet, but here's my excerpt. Note that with one very brief exception, game characters are only referenced, using my primary play-through as my 'canon'; my MC is a mage I've named Vrania (for now). Set just as Varric is being brought in for questioning.

To his credit, Anders had done everything he could to destroy his formula. He had wanted to make his example
here, but had never intended for it to be used again. Justice hadn’t allowed the former Warden to completely cover his tracks, however, though the templars would never have been capable of finding his secrets no matter how thoroughly they ransacked his clinic. Only a mage would be able to uncover what he’d hidden, and no mage in Thedas was bold enough to return to the city to try and retrieve it.
Until now.

Edit: Still no title, but the finished product came out to 2,294 words. Updating the excerpt to reflect a few edits I made before my final submission.

“But Andraste... the Maker...” the templar could barely speak.
“I know what you’ll say,” whispered Gred and looked at him. “And you’d be right. I know the temptations; I’ve had to live with them every day of my life. You do not understand. You never will. You’ve never felt it.”
“Felt what?”
“The voices. The allurement. The spirits calling. I’ve spent hours shutting my ears, crying. When I was younger, I used to run to Tarra’s bed and her voice was the only thing that kept them away. I prayed for a templar to come and take me.”

The Price of Freedom
2481 words

Two uninitiated mages from Kinloch Hold find an unlikely means of escape before Uldred’s revolt. Without so much as a spare meal or a plan, the best friends flee across Ferelden with the dream of becoming Isolationists. When the templars pursue, the pair learn there is something stronger than the dreaded Chantry automatons.

Their unexpected ally is no demon, mage or spirit. He is something else, and gives them an opportunity. They can remain in Ferelden, alongside forever living in complete freedom.

Unfortunately, the price could cost them even more than Tranquility.
