Lyrium addiction
A Circle mage, Tharys, from Ferelden, comes to Kirkwall and steals some lyrium from Carta with the help from a new friend he found in the Hanged Man. He plans to sell this lyrium a templar in the city, who is having trouble obtaining it since the templar-mage war, and use the money to help his sister and her children leave Kirkwall. However, after the last transaction is made, Tharys decides to join the templar and travel with him to Orlais.

"Boxes"

He hated this part. No matter how many times he witnessed it, it never got any easier. It haunted his dreams, even his waking moments, when duty once more opened the old dread-wound.
The screaming, gnashing, howling as flesh melted and bone warped hideously until there was nothing left but a monster—a demon abomination—where a human being once stood—
No, not a human being. A mage. It was so hard to remember that they weren't exactly human. Close—by the Maker, they were close—but they weren't. They monsters, disasters waiting to happen. All that stood between a demon-possessed mage and the people of Thedas were the Templars like himself. It was his duty to be vigilant, to watch for signs that a mage might be corrupted. And if his vigil dropped for even a moment…
—the flash of red as his blade sank home in the creature's chest, the inhuman shriek of denial as the monster that had only moment before been a human or an elf passed from this world into the next. It fixed its bloodshot gaze to his, and for a moment, he thought he saw a flicker of recognition, of something that might have been a piece of the mage still inside that twisted shell.

 Death is Death

Word Count: 2,497

Abstract:

There was a time when he might have felt some sort of empathy with the mages. A time when he understood their desire to be free from templar oppression, perhaps even a time when he agreed with it. But if ever there was such a time it had been long forgotten, buried under years of blood and nightmares. How could he ever forgive, or forget, after what had come to pass in the Ferelden Circle? He had to remember. He had to ensure that never again could a single mage cause such devastation.

Title: Vows
Word Count: 2,027

Tristan made a decision years ago that is sure to haunt him and challenge his
resolve. The discipline of his templar training gave him direction,
purpose, and plenty of time to contemplate the ramifications of the
path he is on. While hunting apostates, he is faced with his vows in
ways for which he was not sure he was prepared.

Thank you so much! I had a lot of fun doing this!

Title: Suffer Not
Word Count: 2,482

In the middle of the night a group of unruly Templars bent on killing Mages make an attempt to nab Rynn and his mother. In a desperate attempt the young mage and his mother flee, trying to hopefully sneak past their pursuers. With only starlight and the Templar’s torchlight as their guidance they creep into the woods.

Good luck to everyone who sent in an entry and I can't wait to see the results!

Title: Wolves
Word Count: 927

Not many live out here on the Frostback Mountains, and the villages are few and far between. But still, the scattered farms need a Templar, and some small token of the Maker’s presence, if He can see them at all under the shadow of the high mountains. Once upon a time, Ned had dreamed of a proper posting- something exciting, not tending a dusty bronze statue at the end of the world- but now he has grown used to the quiet rhythms of this life and, in truth, cannot imagine another.

Title:In Search of Purpose
Word Count:2495
He left the Templars before the war, guided by a Spirit of Foresight. When they found out, they cursed him and called him an abomination. He wandered the countryside aimlessly, suddenly bereft of the duty and camaraderie that he had come to know among the Templars. In search of a purpose, he came to Kirkwall, and came across a purpose, a reason to live, and a way to protect the people.

Title: Flying Embers
Word Count: 2,357

The mage revolution has begun; one act of defiance sets the spark that ignites the flames that are slowly spreading throughout Thedas. Tales will be told of the great heroes that took part in the center of it all, but what of the little people? The anonymous who simply yearn to survive in peace? This tale is not of a great hero, she will have no legend attached to her name. All Syrie wants is to avoid Tranquility and live her life...until the Templars show up at her door that is.

Mistakes
Word count: 2,500

In the wake of the destruction of Kirkwall's Chantry, an upside-down world sees the joining of the unlikliest of allies in the hunt for a particularly heinous maleficar: a Tantervale Templar, and a mage from Tevinter, an agent of the Black Divine.

There was no reasoning, no greater good, there was only revenge.
Once I was a templar in Nevarra. I believed in what they told me to believe. Now I can´t be called a templar anymore.
Some people call us The Fallen for we have left our vows forgotten to fight for the right to live. Our enemies are former friends and lovers, family and strangers alike.
Today we stand with those we were taught to fear and we fight side by side against the loyal templars and the libertarian extremists in a brutal war that has brought Thedas to its knees.

Very well, here is the excerpt for my short story (2368 words):

In the Depth

"There was a certain glow in the desire demon’s black eyes. It was like single star in deep darkness. It was so beautiful that Nerie lost herself in these eyes for a single second. Could she trust this creature? All demons are liars; they betray everyone to achieve their aims. They are not interested in lives of human beings as soon as they have the chance to escape the fade."

After I read through all those posts, I am not expecting any chance, but that's okay, because this is my first try to write an English short story. Never tried before (it's not my mother tongue) but I had a lot of fun! So, thank you for that contest. :)

Arrg sent it! After numerous cups of tea tis done the day before the deadline, but now i wish id written it from my blood mage's perspective, oh well! Good luck too all, i really hope they give us more writing challenges :)

Abstract:
Title: Silverblooded
Now it is told that the darkest hour is the moment before dawn; a finely spun yarn which never quite cut the mark for Glenn because night and shadow dozed comfortably within half his heart. He was having one such misgiving while the sun sparked casting rosy tints across a land gripped in ice. Throughout winter he'd been ''fraternising'' with a blood mage.

Joined the forums just to enter this :) There are so many good stories here - mine sounds so dull in comparison! I know that I don't have much of a chance, but I enjoyed writing this. I can't wait to see the winners!

Title: A Failed Escape
Abstract: Marie and Winfrey are both escaped Circle Mages; two apostates, who with the help of a templar recruit, managed to escape the Gallows. The three of them now waited in the bowels of Darktown, a place neither one of them had been before. They were waiting for a man who would help them find a way out of Kirkwall, a chance to escape the grasp of a powerful oppressor. This was an opportunity they couldn’t pass up.

Atonement (haven't looked through all the posts, but this seems like such an obvious title, so if anyone else has used it, sorry. I'm just bad with titles sometimes)

Word Count: 2492

A repentant ex-Templar assists a group of mages in tracking down another group of "apostates", with the aid of a young elven mage who will not shut up. As they travel he confronts his inner demons, with her help, but doesn't realise that some memories are flesh and blood, and he will have to confront them also.

Title: Resolve
Word count: 2,498

There comes a time in every person's life that tests the limits of their resolve, a collision of ideology and circumstance. The world falls away and, for a moment, their true character can be gleaned. An act of extremism, born from centuries of dogmatic persecution, ignites an entire city, and, against this backdrop, the oppressed draw lines in the sand, ready to stand and face their future with uncertainty. Faith against will; desire against reason; temptation against resolve. These moments mirror the soul's truest nature, and one man is poised to face the revelation that such clarity brings with it.

In All Things, Moderation

Broken Doll
By Freckles04

Darkspawn attack Ser Aaren and his charge, an elven mage named Ennis, on their way to a village for an assignment.  Nearly a decade after the Blight, the creatures should be long gone—but that means nothing now, not when both Ennis and Aaren are wounded. As they recover, the mage and templar have an opportunity to share their points of view regarding their brethren and the Chantry, but Maker knows if either is willing to change their mind.
