Actually I VERY MUCH understand RPG, and the game IS coded for Alistair to date men in the game, but for some reason BW took it out at the last minute.

I'm sorry, but you are wrong. Alistair was never intended to be romanceable for males, neither was Morrigan for females. There is absolutely no dialog written for this, and if you make Alistair/Morrigan ignore gender checks, they will still talk to you as though you are of the opposite sex. It was not "taken out". The reason there is a flag that checks for same sex romances is because all the flags that could conceivably be needed were put into the template romance plots, and then duplicated for all the romances.

If you want to make them bisexual, go to it, just don't assume that just because the flag was there and never used, that it's because the same sex romances were taken out at the last minute on a whim.

Sheryl Chee can say what she wants. Bioware had a previous issue with one of their moderators saying stuff on forums before about gay characters in their games.
I wouldn't expect a programmer / writer to come on the forums, but if she is a writer I doubt she is the sole writer for all characters... and certainly the characters ALL had changes from their first imagining to the final product. Furthermore the PUBLISHERS stick their noses in development far too often in all medias. Who's to say Alistair didn't START gay but then someone other than the person(s) who wrote most of his stuff decided he wasn't?

While Zevran may have the most obvious "gay dialog", Alistair is the one who pings my gaydar the most from his regular dialogue. Someone mentioned the pillowfight speech etc. for him and I agree.
Breeders often can't fathom their oh-so-straight macho athletes (warrior in this case) that they look up to are in fact gay. They don't hit on anything with a "joystick" instead of an "Xbox". They don't have limp wrists. You'd never know they were gay until they retire and no longer have a fear of people discriminating and ruining their careers and lives when they come out and shock their fans. Maybe Alastair is one of those guys. As a Grey Warden he wouldn't want to be seen as "weak" or different... especially not after being kicked out of the only home he ever knew.
I would say Zevran is the straight one... but he wants to get close to his mark (The main character) and/or not be killed by him. Keep your friends close but your enemies closer.

Gay's have been playing "Guess the Gay" watching movies and TV for decades, and video-games more recently. I'm glad for the inclusion of open same gender flirting / teasing at the very least. I'm also VERY surprised by the support of the idea for gay characters here on the forums.
Maybe humans aren't that bad after all...

Then let me say it.

*I* wrote Alistair.

There is no romance dialogue written for Alistair with a male character. Whatever you are seeing is either the regular friendship dialogue or romance dialogue that is intended for a female player but flagged only "PC = male/female" to distinguish between the two.

It's great that you like Alistair, and if you can mod him to develop a romance with a male PC and it's believeable then that's awesome. But it's a little presumptuous to tell us what our intention was with the character, don't you think?

Where the heck did you get the inspiration for "Have you have Licked a Lampost in Winter"

Well... it's -40C outside right now, so licking lampposts is a hazardous pasttime. Insofar as that conversation goes, it was just a way to have a discussion about sex without actually talking about sex. Alistair was an exercise in Joss Whedon-speak, which has a patter I was trying to break down. I think I got it okay, but Alistair's way of speaking is the result either way.

Did you never entertain the thought of making Alistair the bi one and Zevran the straight one? It just boggles my mind the way they are. It's not my place to tell you how to do the job you're doing so well, but it's something of a personal disappointment for me that I have a hard time getting my head around. Alistair > Zevran any day in my book.<3

I would have liked to have written a character that was simply gay and not bisexual at all, but that's difficult to argue considering the relative size of the audience such content would be aimed towards. Remember that we're not that far away from a time when it was difficult to get content geared towards female players, never mind gay ones.

At any rate, given the mandate of writing a bisexual character, no -- Zevran was always created as bisexual from his concept. Alistair never was. Alistair was intended to be adorable, and a bit of a Woobie, but never bisexual or gay. This was not to deny male players his particular brand of awesomeness, it's just who he is. I get that you might like him, but liking him does not mean he's gay -- except in the world of wishful thinking, I suppose, where one can draw whatever connections one likes. Image IPB

I always assumed the lampost line was inspired by "A Chistmas Story." Old movie. Some kid does it, on a dare, with predictable results.

I think I know the movie you're talking about, but here where I live sticking your tongue to anything metal is a cautionary tale that we all learn about. We all know someone who's done it. Heck, *I* did it once on a dare and then ripped part of my tongue off when I panicked. That *really* hurt.

After 9 playthroughs he is not, trust me. He is like that sick puppy your kids dragged in the house and left for you to take care of and however his pissing all around irritates you, you just dont have a heart to throw him out. Or something.

Well, the day I discover a way to make a character universally liked by everyone I'll let you know. Until that time, I feel fairly confident that many people found him such.
