Why on earth shouldn't I support them? They fight and die for my freedom.

Steadily dwindling freedom.

You both are, its a lot more complicated than them being killers, or fighting for your freedom. Much more complicated than one or the other.

This thread is going all the places it shouldn't. And this is coming from someone who ordinarily loves thread derailment.

Freedom that didn't get destroyed by those islamist guys but our own goverments.

I don't fear fascism in disguise as fascism. I fear fascism in disguise as democracy.
Think it was either Erich Kästner or Berthold Brecht who said that ...

Oh look.

One doesn't have to support any group political or military.

If you lot are gonna derail the topic at least keep it on MASS EFFECT. Let's not get the RL politics/military mixed in please?

Definitely something to ponder. OK back to hating Ashley because of her poetry!

Yup... well, I didn't hate her poetry. I don't remember nothing that she had said  It sounded forced in her... no, not forced, blah I don't know how to describe it.

It just... it didn't fit for some odd reason.

Indeed, Sir, indeed.

I hate Ashley's poetry because ... wait. I don't hate Ashley's poetry. I like it, I'm even writing such stuff. Not in English, just German, but hey, we all come with flaws.

Not forced. If it feels like anything, than more like "out of the blue". Like something "extra" you didn't expect, a suprising trait. So it's less "forced" than "surprising".

EXACTLY! God, I don't know why I struggled so much with this...

Anyway. You're right, her poetry came as something that I didn't expected, though, it didn't bothered me at all.

Yup. The thing is: without poetry, Ashley's character would feel less "multi-layered".

Lets check:

Layer 1 (outside): tough soldier, tomboyish, quite straight forward, has a tendency to question her superior officer.
Layer 2 (friendship): aka family layer. Ash cares deeply for her family (mostly her sisters) and also tries to cleanse her family's name. Her first soft spot.
Layer 3 (romance): Here where Ashley starts to show far more of her character. Poetry seems to be one of her hobbys or antics. It appears she also seems to enjoy romantic stuff too (which is pretty much the opposite from "tough soldier". I'd also say she starts to show more of her playfuls side.
Layer 4 (in love): Most likely the intimate stuff. "Hellcat" and such.

Something like that. You also can re-arrange those layers and add some additional ones for fannon-stuff.

Sure, Ashley's love for poetry comes quite surprising, but you could also say the same about her caring for her sisters or the fact Gunnery Chief Williams is not only a die-hard soldier but also a woman that still loves womanly stuff like romantic evenings or so. I'd say it doesn't matter if Ash loves poems or writes songs or appears to be an amateur fashion designer: everyone has hobbies ;)

Yes, "out of blue" seems to be correct term. I'd expect person to cite line or two (if they're short); quote different authors, maybe, if one likes poetry that much.

And classic poetry isn't my thing - if Ashley cited something from russian futurism, she'd probably become my favourite character in series. But I won't say I hate her for existing choice.

Fix'd, but I joke.

I wonder, maybe if she has an office aboard the Normandy in ME3, we'll have one of the "clickable" banter moments: see some papers on the desk, they end up being little lines she's wrote, start talking about it.

Where the heck would you be if your military didn't defend you from terrorists and the like? Anyways I'm done with this subject, it's like trying to talk sense into the senseless. Btw I'm not trying to offend you either.

So about Ashley.............poetry......right.

Yup, ignorancy and fear are very real. Very powerful ways of manipulation, worse is that they complement each other.

Oh, those threats aren't invisible. We created them. Without America, there would be no terrorists.

I'll give you one word that explains everything you are so naive about: Oil.
Another: Power.

The government wants us to believe that a ton of muslims got up one day and decided they hated America because we were 'free'. Please don't tell me you buy into that to?
