NO! Ashley is not a closet lesbian.
I think she may be a little bi-curious.
Uh-oh. Is this going where I think it's going?
Yes.
Ashley will use her newfound Fashion powers and give all of the women makeovers!
B-But...How did you know what I was thinking of?

The thing is: her poetry comes out of the blue. You don't know about it before she starts quoting Tennyson. It's a surprising hobby, not more, not less. Doesn't feel wrong to me.
Lets say you're dating a girl for several weeks now. One day she suddenly shows you poems or drawings - and you had no idea she was doing such stuff - does it feel "wrong", "tacked on" or just "surprising"? Same with Ashley

It's weird with Ashley because it completely negates the other part of her personality.

Her being a tomboyish "One of the guys" kinda woman (At least, my view).
I think the artistic/spirituality is weird with Thane too, but it works slightly better because his family is more fleshed out.

I think I know where you come from.
Think Ashley's "tomboyish" outside is more or less some kind of barrier to defend her soft inside. Like an armor. She needed to be like that - as a marine. Most times Shepard is talking to the marine Williams, not the woman Ashley. She slowly opens herself to him (and not like that) once she's sure he won't use her soft side against her. It starts as friendship and can grow into more if you want.
A lot of people pretend to be different than they actually are. Don't you think most of the soldiers in a modern day army have a family and love someone but won't show that in the battlefield?

Of course.
In regards to your second paragraph, the reason I think it's weird because she also displays a strong tomboyish aura while not in combat too. She's feminine, but still kinda tomboyish, if that makes any sense. I guess I'm wording it wrong.

I think the poetry is really cute, she doesn't open up to alot of people like that, she made recordings for her dad when he was on active duty. So I think her reciting poetry in front of Shepard is a big sign of trust and friendship/love.

Sure. And totally understandable.
Ashley is talking to her superior officer. Even when not on the battlefield, why should she suddenly show her soft side?
Just keep in mind: it was the Alliance military that blacklisted her family's name. Maybe she never joined the military on own will but the cleanse that name. She seems to be inexperienced with ship duty and never had to contact to aliens before joining the Normandy's crew. Overall she seems to be very distrustful and allows only close persons to explore her soft side.
Ash wasn't sure of Shepard's agenda regarding her person. Did he respect her as soldier, ignoring her family's past? Was there more than professional contact, maybe friendship? The "more than friendship" part happens later, but you can't fall in love with someone you don't trust. Shepard somehow had earned her trust and became a close friend to Ashley, therefore she showed him her soft inside.
Just a theory, but works imo.

Don't ask me. I think it's less her poetic trait - a lot of people simply don't like her because of her religiosity (uhh c'mone ... just because she believes in God she's no zealot) and her so called "racism" (if Ash is a racist, then 99,9999% of mankind are racists too - people call her a "racist" for nothing. She's just reserved towards aliens - or any other human she doesn't know well enough to trust him or her.).
Think that "poetic trait" doesn't really make a lot of people hate her.
Ash in the Presidium: "I can't tell the aliens from the animals."
As for the actual topic, random poetry readings are very... random. First there's the WTF moment, then it's a bit patronizing in a "look what I know" kind of way.

You have a rather pathetic outlook on life if you think being artistic negates conceptualizations of 'manliness'.AgitatedLemon wrote...

If someone only has one side to them, I don't want to know them. One dimensional people are boring, live boring, and die pointeless insignificant deaths. Can't speak for everyone, but I can't remember anyone who was a one trick pony. The poeple that stand out in my memory are those that were eclectic enough in their pursuits to suprise me day to day.
Just cause someone can lift weights, run seven miles and box for an hour a day doesn't mean they don't listen to Yann tiersen, watch C-span, and read DSM.

It's kinda a well known fact that line got bugged and was not intended to be used as random banter line. Even BW stated it once.
Too bad they never fixed that issue - same for Garrus' face.

I can understand where lukertin is coming from. what point did you really expect anyone to take from your post. its a recognised fact that people are multi-layered and her tom-boyish nature adn her creative/poetic interest are not mutually exclusive.
