At worst, she is slightly xenophobic do to her ignorance and lack of experience with aliens. The fact that she's in the military makes her opinion even more hard edged.

People often mistake her for a racist and they whine about her moment on horizon.. Not sure how she isn't feminine

Even then it isn't really xenophobia it is being nationalistic. Having Wrex and Garrus on the ship (both have been in the military before) is like having very dangerous former military foreign nationals on a highly advanced ship that has no real allegiance to the Alliance but only to Shepard. Anyone in the military would be wary of that.

Hmm, okay, that's just a guess, but maybe Ash had feelings for Shepard even if not romanced? Whatever. Yeah, Ashley lashes out a bit too much against Liara. However, I doubt it's caused by Liara's race. Looks as if Ashley simply doesn't like her that much. Maybe it's the lack of trust: as I said before, Ashley doesn't trust easily, regardless if alien or human.

Whatever. I think at the end of ME1 they were pretty much okay. I wonder if Ash & Liara will go along in ME3 ... maybe yes, maybe no. In case they do I'm happy, if they don't like each other I have to accept.

Ashley only actually 'Lashes out' at Liara once and that was when Shepard was likely following a romantic relationship with both of them or starting one. Any other time on the ship can easily be seen as Kaidan somewhat attacking her if Shepard is a female or your in a romance with him.

There are reasons to hate Ashley?

The only thing I have to say against her is that her loyalty in the Alliance is sadly misplaced but that's hardly a reason to hate her.

Well she is a Alliance Marine who was born into a military family. Your right hating for being rather Nationalist is rather stupid.

Liara said it best

Shepard: Honestly I am tired of it all. Tired of working with Cerberus, tired of the council not believing in me, tired of my closest friends(no shepard!) not trusting in me.

Liara: Yes, I heard about what Ashley said on Horizon. But their shortsightedness dosen't diminish your accomplishment.

So like she said Ashley is incredibly short sighted.

We all know BW made Liara to some kind of Mary Sue in ME2. She knows everything and also knows the best words how to comfort Shepard. So it's not surprising she's acting as the only caring ally Shepard still has.

Must say, it doesn't really help me to like her more than a friend. She simply tries to hard to be the understanding, loving and caring friend. I dunno why, but if I would try that on any woman I would end in the friendzone. And that's why Liara ends there too for me. I think it's not sexy. And I'm speaking of experience - my fiancee is wonderful, but she tries so incredible hard to be the perfect partner that our love starts to vanish. She shoves herself into the friendzone, so to speak.

In short: I like Liara, but she's a total no-go as romance for me. Because she tries too hard to make Shepard happy.  ;)

Don't bring this up again please especially in a thread about Ashley and her poetry. There are so many things wrong with it that can't be discussed in this thread.

I think Ashley haters are the kind of politically correct crazies who look for the slightest excuse to call something racist and destroy it (on Virmire).

How are any of Ashley's concerns invalid? Look at it from a military point of view. So many different species wandering all over an incredibly advanced stealth warship?

I doubt there are many who hate Ashley. The fact that she is xenophobic, her family and history interest in poetry made her one of the few characters in ME that seemed like a real person....because real people have flaws.

I never thought of her as butch or unfeminine either. It's quite remarkable because most often female kickass characters come across as fake to me. Ashley strikes a rare balance of a professional soldier and women I buy into.

The only truly annoying thing about her, are her fans.

Plus she is a damn racist!

Oh yes just forgot about that....her poetry skills sucks hard

If Ashley is a racist, why would she oppose Terra Ferma and Cerberus, They are both pro-human and anti-alien groups, also why would Ashley hope Tali's people will return to their home world of she is a racist or suggest that you talk to Liara about her mother, she even admire's the DA, her issue with alien's is just caution ranging back to FCW, she dosn't like alien's but I would not say she hate's them she is just cautiou's (sp), Also there are plenty of alien's that don't like humanity other than baterian's and turian's, in Flux you hear a Salerian taking about how human's are "trying" to take over

Ashley isn't xenophobic. She is more nationalist than xenophobe.

some people just found it corny and out of place. I'm alright with most of it but sometimes it is cringe worthy. plus some people just hate on her because she's "racist".

I don't like her face, not too fond of her attitude, and poetry bores me. I'm a scientist, not a poet. I was never attracted to literature.

mmm not really i see how people can call her a racist and i can see how shes not.

Also her concerns slightly invalid due to some of these points in my opinion:
Garrus, a turian C-Sec officer who obviously got clearance to serve with Shepard, and another point is how is under suspicion when the turians already have schematics of the normandy

Tali, as much as i don't like she can be defended by the fact that Udina puts her on your ship (i tried going renegade on her Udina forces her on Shep's ship)

Wrex, i can concede due to the fact that hes a merc and could steal the normady's specs and sell them, but i don't see him doing that but thats my opinion.

Me personally i don't like ashley cuz shes ugly period. plus her voice is annoying, and shes really bad at reciting poetry, shes kinda butch. I don't like tomboys much cuz when they act liek one of the boys it gets annoying especially when they think they can punch you in the nuts, and start bi*ching when you punch em back on the boob....(hitting little close to home lol)

JACK, Yes! Jack likes poetry and Kasumi But they don't spout it out like broken recorder.

She may have recited that poem because it was meaningful for her.  Sharing her innermost thoughts, leveraging that into showing interest in Shep.  Guess people shouldn't open up by sharing things they like?

And there were, what, a total of 3 recitations throughout 2 games?  One of which was a postscript in a letter.  Hardly a broken record.  (*note: only saved her in 2 playthroughs, and one was a male Shepard, so perhaps I didn't see more than the 3)

They keep it to themselves as it should be.

If people did that, these boards would be a lot quieter, and much nicer.

*shrugs*
A woman tends to be hostile towards another woman if she believes she could want to get into her lover's pants.
It has to do with jealousy. Not every woman lashes out against her competitor - they still feel bad or so.

And actually, a romanced Ashley tells Shepard he should look for Liara if she's fine (after Benezia's death).

Just for the record. I'd say Ashley is a jealous type while Liara ... and any other Asari I guess ... don't even know jealousy. At least not in the same way like humans.

And if you play a female Shepard?
No wait, Shepard can say it's because they're all tired and cranky. 'Scuse me while I go adjust that opinion of her.
Ashley still has an antagonistic personality, but I don't find her fondness for poetry mismatched. Just a touch corny because of the timing.

Agreed.

Just keep in mind Ashley (and Kaidan) originally were intended as bisexual options. Most of the lines are still in game. Maybe that "lashing out against Liara" is related to that issue, I don't know.
Lets pretend Ash was never intended as lesbian option, she simply lashes out against Liara because Ash doesn't trust her. And given the fact Liara is the daughter of Benezia, it is understandable.

Actually, I don't dislike Ashley's "antagonistic" personality. It's not that she's showing that side Liara only. Ash doesn't trust anyone that easily and she defends herself by attacking. Not the most pleasant trait of her tbh, but one I can take.

Just my opinion.

Of course people have personal reasons from their own lives that make them not like her. In my case I am an American expat who has lived all over the world and I hate the kind of militaristic, short-sighted tribalism that Ashley displays, which is why she is just a Grunt to me. Kaidain is much more open minded.

Think you got it wrong.
I don't mind a caring girlfriend. There's a difference between "caring" and "obession", what do you think?
My fiancee is a bit obsessive and very jealous. I can take it, but it puts some issues in that relationship.

Liara is a lot more obsessive than my fiancee. She simply loves Shepard, regardless of what Shepard is doing. I'm not sure if that's "true love" or fangirling since I can't recognize a clear line between both. I'll stick with the positive interpretation: Liara is madly in love. And she doesn't give up that idea even if Shepard first goes after Ashley and picks Miranda in ME2 ...

That's what I was talking about. Having a loving and caring character is nice - it can turn into something bad if it turns into a "obession".

Sorry I didn't state it clearly.

Hmmm, Ash doesn't cheat on you and she's not acting like a "fotze"
So your argument is invalid.

Think we just ran into black/white thinking. You can have an ass of a partner and someone with an obsession. Both is unhealthy for a relationship. B)

If Liara loved Shepard regardless. There wouldn't have been a brutal "dumped by Liara" route at the end of Lotsb final romance scene.

Yes, make Shepard act like a brooding, depressing idiot and Liara gets tired of your constant emo hopeless attitude and leaves you alone in your room.

She is the only LI that DUMPS Shepard at his romance climax.

Though most Liara fans or mancer would never pic this. Its still there and a valid route. As the relationship ends and the portrait is faced downwards.

So yeah Cptdata Liara CAN and will dump you.

Okay, never saw that scene, Darius ... so yeah, guess I'm wrong about that particular part of Liara's character.

I never treated her "bad" or something, but quite professional. That's why I think it's quite inappropriate she turns out to be far more caring in ME2 (LotSB) if you use that Normandy scene to do emotional talk. It's a bit awkward. Works between very close friends - but not for professional friends.

However, that's a matter of taste.
