I found a thread about how romance options would work in the escapist forum and the extract below caught my attention:

"Hudson said that there was actually a large amount of data to keep track of across the previous two games, as the relationship statuses weren't just binary, yes/no, deals. In both games, there was the opportunity for the player to pursue multiple romantic options before making his or her final choice, and these would all be taken into account."

Does that mean that for example, If I were to pursue Ashley and Liara in the first game, then choose Liara during the confrontation, Ashley might come at me in ME3 and show a romantic interest or something of that nature? This could make things more interesting. However, I might of misunderstood the post.

Thoughts?

It looks like you interpreted it correctly.

Which means I'm in trouble.

It's going to be addressed if you cheated on your ME1!LI. Okay, "cheating" doesn't fit well, after all if death doesn't end a relationship, what can you do then?

Lets call it "stay loyal towards your old LI". Your Shepard got a second chance and s/he can try to avoid new romances or go after a new love. If you stay loyal, there's a high chance you'll be able to continue your old relationship. Liara kinda considers it as "cheating" if you were after a new LI in ME2 (Lair of the Shadowbroker), I think Ashley or Kaidan will treat it the very same. They might see it as "cheating".

Romance statuses are definitely not binary. The game even keeps track of how you broke up with a LI as seen in the Kasumi dlc. Take Jacob for example.
*Jacob being romanced: "I've seen the way Jacob looks at you. Like he's thinking of using his biotics to get you out of that uniform. I say, don't make him work that hard."
*Jacob broken up with well: "I heard about you and Jacob. You were such a great couple. But he's back on the market, right? Maybe I should start wearing my come-hither hood."
*Jacob broken up with poorly: "I heard about you and Jacob. You were such a great couple. Sorry to hear it didn't end well. It has to be tough keeping up a relationship on a ship like this."
*Jacob rejected: "I heard you turned Jacob down. Really? I know you've got a galaxy to save, but... you have seen Jacob, right?"
*Jacob consummated: "So... you got together with Jacob. You've lived the dream. Hang onto that man, Shepard. He's one of the good ones."

Apart from that, I think someone on twitter commented that LI's that died during ME2 will be taken into account, so that's another variable.

This thing is from May 16th, before they decided to add LIs, they might have cut some stuff due to adding more LIs.

Sounds like it may be possible to create utter chaos aboard the Normandy. This will make for excellant replayability of the past games, and when I say that, I mean hours of youtube surfing to watch all of the different confrontations.

Pffffft. Why would they waste development time on this? To satisfy nerds who dream about being a pimp in a virtual world, because they can't talk to girls IRL? I'd rather they spend time coming up with a better main plot that the POS it is now.

There is romance in Bioware games.  It's something they do.  Surely this is not news to you.

Hmmm.. Imagine what would happen if you romanced all possible LI's in ME2, as in do the trick where you get the love scene, then break up with that LI and move on to the next one.

You mean Shepard's legendary sleaziness and attempts for a four-way will be commented on? Yay, am all for teammates making jokes about it!

So, we may have a conversation like this, "Commander, you initiated relations with me on the original Normandy, also began to meet with the good asari doctor on the side and eventually chose her to develop a relationship with. Then you save a galaxy, die, get reborn in what I assume was only a second time occurance in this universe, and start to work for the enemy. You turn evil, have random hookups with pychotic prisoners, try to use her code to compel a Justicar, foolishly, and dump the prisoner for Tali. Then you go on a suicidal mission, with you fumbling attempts prior to the mission almost killing your quarian, and save the galaxy again. You then dump the poor girl, rekindle your romance with Liara for a single night, blow up a batarian colony and come back here. And the first words out of your mouth to me are "Looking good, Ash?!". "

God, I so want someone to call my leacherous Shep out like this.

The ultimate Pimp Shepard, although the overwhelming amount of dialogue/confrontataions needed for a shepard who has done that leads me to believe that Bioware wouldn't take the time to make scenes to address EVERY single LI that shepard romanced (or tried to). I guess we shall see whe ME3 comes out.

So I take it that Ash was on the Normandy when Shepard visited the Consort and never knew about Miranda and Kelly :P

So not only will there be consequences for cheating, but also flirting? Looks like My Shep will be in trouble (insert canned sitcom-style "oooooh" here).

As much as I like the romances I really hope they do not go over the top with crew infighting like they did in BG2.

Of course it would be interesting to be confronted by the LI you NEVER pursued...

LIARA: You hit on Garrus, Thane, Kaidan, Jacob and Wrex! What is wrong with ME?

SHEPARD: An Asari? That is like totally gross.
