Discussion and feedback for the new BioWare Blog. Read the entry here!

Also, let us know if you have any questions about the design challenge (submit screenshots of your designs by January 3rd!).

There are a lot of amazing artists in the community, so this should be quite a challenge!

Should the designs stick with the fundamental 3-column layout which the blog is in now, or is there more freedom in how entrants want to place/represent the data?

When designing, should entrants stick to what is achievable without using javascript or additional Wordpress plugins (which is still a lot)?

Because submissions are supposed to be in screenshot format, should entrants make note of any non-static elements in their vision? Or "if it needs to be noted, it shouldn't be in the design"?

What better way to get free labour, eh? Is there remuneration available aside from kudos considering it's a big multi-national company using someone's work for free? I also see that there are no resources provided, i.e. logos, images, colour values, etc. as it seems that's part of the "challenge". It's a lot of work for someone to do just for the credit and "fan participation" in your brand, and it's not even guaranteed their participation will be accepted or acknowledged no matter how much work they put into it, but obviously it's their choice should they take part.

For a company as big as EA/BioWare, this smells pretty stupid. Please think a little harder next time you wish to "engage" with the community to better respect them and your relationship with them.

If you are such an individual who is more than willing to participate, I don't discount your enthusiasm, but merely point out some discrepancies in this set-up and encourage those serious about their craft to not cheapen it in the eyes of large corporate entities who can do well to financially support the artists whose work they encourage.

Since they mention they wish for a "screenshot" entry, it's possible designs might only be used as a concept -- and possibly elements of the final art/design -- as there are no technical guidelines or specifications regarding building/constructing the site itself.

January 3rd also seems a quick turn-around considering the time of the year as well.

This is a challenge for our fans who want to experess themselves via graphic design with the same intentions as a creative writing contest, cosplay, or more traditional art contests.

I wish I had the artistic ability to really contribute. I'd say for those considering to try building a template, you'll definitely want something with a stronger sense of formation. The blog as it stands certainly has simplicity on its side, so if there's still some 56kers out there, there's no sweat. A stronger color palette would be great. Although it's more than just black and white, it does come off a bit plain. Not necessarily the BioWary colors(Black & Blue, etc.), something with a little more splash to it.

That's about all I think of.

this is awesome! but, with the art featuring, will fanfic be featured or no? I mean, for those of us who can't draw for crap but can write, that might be something.

Awesome. I already follow ArenaNet's blog posts on Guild Wars 2, and I look forward to similar content from Bioware.

I'm certain BioWare already has talented web developers on their payroll - they have many websites that didn't just get designed and implemented by magic. They're not asking people to actually implement a theme and turn over templates, scripts, graphic images, and so forth, which is what an actual web designer would have to produce. It's just a nice nod to the community to let people with various talents show off what they can do.

January 3rd also seems a quick turn-around considering the time of the year as well.

A fair point about the deadline, although I guess the idea here is that most people will have vacation time to work on something like this. Other than being away or occupied during the holidays, a nearly two-week turnaround for just a mockup (not an actual implementation) seems doable. It sounds like you can just create a mockup in any graphics editor, you don't actually have to deal with HTML, CSS, Wordpress, cross browser compatibility, interface usability theorycraft and so forth...

Colour. A watermark background image or a more solid one with an opaque block for the text so the bg doesn't interfere with readability.
I realise it's new but a page with all stark white background makes my eyes hurt.

You're giving people 11 days to do this, and it's right in the middle of the holidays.

I find that a bit thoughtless.

Mock ups don't take a lot of time once you get an idea sketched out. I did mine in an hour or two.

We had anticipated people would just want to send us mock ups, however, we are looking into providing resources to help with your design process.

However, if you have an idea and can sketch it out or do a mock up, that is all that is required for this challenge. We just want to see your vision, if you do not have the skills for full execution, that's not a problem.

Thanks to those who have already submitted mock ups and screenshots! Really excited to share some of these entries :)

I went ahead and emailed what I had finished of my design! There wasn't an extension on the Jan 3rd deadline, was there?
