So, I rivalmanced Anders. I did all of his quests and had him at full rivalry. At the end, I sided with the templars and asked him to come with me. He agreed, saying it would be his penance. At the Gallows, he said he'd always love Hawke and they kissed. However, when Varric read the epilogue, he did not mention Anders staying with me. Is this some weird design issue, a bug, or did I do something wrong?
I should have whatever the latest patch we're on is since I connected a few days ago and have the most recent dash. I haven't had problems before, but perhaps I hit a perfect cocktail of rivalrage and Anders... left.. me? D:
Did I mess up the romance.. help? (Endgame spoilers!)

Varric's final monolog is a lot of shades of screwed up when it comes to the romances. Once my female rogue was involved with Fenris, but had to kill him in the end and Varric still said that Fenris went with her.
I wouldn't worry about it. It's probably just a bug.

You may want to ask the Anders fans in his thread about that. I haven't done an Anders rival-mance myself, but I've heard that in at least one version of the rivalry he can agree to help pro-Templar Hawke but plans to kill himself afterward as penance. I'm not sure if that is what happens in the romance or plain rivalry. The endings are buggy though most have been fixed with patches.
Just be careful not to take some of the Anders' fans barbed comments too personally. Most are nice enoughm but a few tend to take it personally if a player doesn't do the "true love" friendship romance with him. Merrill fans can have the same problem.

Abispa is right. Anders doesn't plan on living after the mission. Listen closer to what he's saying when he talks to Hawke at the courtyard. He says somthing along the lines of "I will always love you, but I can't live beyond this day. I just hope that when I die it's Justice not Vengance that will rise from my corpse."

Except that isn't the dialogue I got. Furthermore, when I reloaded and killed Anders, Varric did mention him remaining with Hawke afterwards, so something is clearly not right.

That's really weird.

I think it is a bug, it happened to me on my second play through. I romanced Anders (slept with Isabella once) and completed the story with him but at the end, Varric said Hawke ran off with Isabella. I was annoyed about that and could not understand it, I thought it was because I got the ship for her and promised to go sailing, as long as Anders was included. In subsequent play throughs I either lost her the boat or turned down the sailing offer to be safe, lol.
