I have a thread made about Assault Rifle or Claymore, but after researching on the Wiki about shotguns, I see that the Geth Plasma Shotgun does a tremendous amount of damage. Which would be more suitable for a Vanguard?

It is a viable alternative if you don't like performing the reload trick --- note NOT glitch. However the GPS is tricky in the fact it shoots at the release of the mouse button rather than the click. I find it kind of weird and rhythm breaking personally. All the shotguns are well balanced and has their own feel of comfort, so I'd just try them all and see which one you like the best.

I like the GSG(Geth Shotgun) on some missions and some characters, particularly the Soldier. I have used it on Adepts, Engineers regularly depending on the mission. On Vanguards I happen to HATE it, due to the firing setup mentioned above by Strive, which makes the gun have a bit of a delay on firing. Also the GSG is pretty bad about activating ammo power secondary effects such as freezing and fire dancing, which also lowers it in my book for the Vanguard. It also has some really weird things it can't destroy, like certain powerconduits in Overlord and enemies such as Scions in my opinion take really little damage from it. I would rather take the Claymore or the Eviscerator any day of the week for Vanguards and save the GSG for other classes. I have seen guys here say the like it on the Vanguard, in they charge the shot then Charge the enemy and blast them, but I just don't like the gun on the class.

The reload trick is probably an animation bug that became a feature.  I know there have been certain comments about it as a feature...

Claymore is somewhat fun. I do not like that you have to use animation canceling to make it really shine. At any rate, Vanguard is fun with practically any weapon anyway. I happened to like Viper, Eviscerator, Tempest though.

I don't have the Geth Plasma shotgun though. To me looking at videos I don't see why you would want it for this class. If you want range take Sniper Rifle training and use one of the standard shotguns for up close.

The Geth Plasma Shotgun (GPS) can do tremendous damage if charged, but it takes some time to charge it, and as mcsupersport points out, it does not activate ammo power secondary effects very well. The GPS may be a good idea if you plan to cast your biotics more often than you charge (shameless video plug).

As for the reload cancel trick, I believe I remember seeing that Christina Norman put it in as a feature. With the reload cancel, you are essentially canceling one animation into another animation. Fans of fighting games are likely familiar with the concept.

The claymore is the king of shotguns for vanguards - with the reload-trick "feature". A year ago I would not have said that because I had tried the reload trick and it was a pain-in-the-neck. But finally I decided to use it no matter what, just to get the experience. In my case I purchased a special controller for my xbox that makes the reload trick easier ( razr onza ). After that I have done both vanguard and soldier with claymore.

Without the reload trick, the claymore is not the best shotgun, which is a shame. But I agree with everyone else that the Geth shotgun is better used on non-vanguard, at least for me as well.

I am apparently the only person on the forums who loves the Claymore and has NEVER used the reload trick in combat. Oh sure, I tried it out of combat to try to get the timing, didn't like it, and never tried again. The reload trick may be nice on Insanity, but it isn't necessary.

Also: Claymore for Vanguards, GPS for everyone else. Unless you're playing a Cryo Vanguard, in which case Scimitar plus Vindicator.

I saw that mentioned...

To me it seems like something a used car salesman would say about a problem with a car that may have a secondary benefit.  The reason I say that is that the trick works with casting powers or changing cover.  If it was just melee it would seem more like something that was intended to be that way.

Possibly. Although using Tech Armor to reset squadmate powers is an unintended feature that a developer (cannot remember who) confirmed was a bug and not an intended feature. So who knows.

The GPS is the only shotgun you need to aim carefully with - you can miss horribly at a distance of a few meters if you do not stagger the enemy or lead your shot, due to a combination of small spray, slow projectile, and triggering mechanism. That for me is very fun because it's how a shotgun works IRL.

Also FYI charging the GPS only makes it about 10% more ammo efficient. The key to saving ammo on this weapon (for a Vanguard at least) is using your powers (Pull/Slam/Reave/What have you) and meleeing enemies to death more often. Also use your backup weapons more. That way you won't be constantly running out of ammo on the GPS.

The GPS is great if you want to play a semi-Adept who only spends half their cooldown time on Charge. If you wish to only Charge and not use any other active powers then stay true to the Claymore - it's made for that.

Hey guys, what exactly is this reload trick? Forgive me for my lack of know-how here but I've only recently started using the claymore and I'm not brilliant with it yet although it certainly packs some punch at point blank with heightened Adreneline rush :o) Now if I could speed up the reload I'd use it a lot more...

If you fire the Claymore, hold the trigger button down, and when the click of the reload animation happens, mash melee and the reload animation will be stopped and the gun will fire with a melee attack. Basically it shaves a second or two off the time between firing the gun.

Took me a while, but I finally found the reference:

(The discussion starts at the last post on the bottom of the page)
There was also some discussion here:
http://social.biowar...1/index/5631307

It looks like it was an intended feature of Tech Armor that was supposed to be cut from the final game but they forgot to cut it out. Most people did not notice it until about a year ago.

You can also use various other animations to shorten the reload too... like using a power, going in and out of cover, and sometimes if the enemy staggers you when you are reloading it will do it too.

Supposedly this actually works with every weapon, but I think the reload times are short enough on the other ones it isn't really noticeable. I don't think I have tried it on anything else.

Really my comment above about it only shining using the trick is maybe overly critical, it is a good one shot weapon, it's just that it is very specialized, perhaps one of the most specialized in the game. You should definitely be close to take advantage of the range bonus, and to minimize the spread of the pattern so that you get more shot on target.

Now if you throw the Eviscerator into the mix, with it's tighter pattern it does give you more flexibility as far as range is concerned, but when I was doing Vanguard it actually felt more fluid to use up close... partly because you could more easily charge shoot melee shoot melee shoot melee and practically anything was dead... or engage multiples easier. The other thing is that the tighter pattern actually makes close headshots easier because you can more reliably land all the shot on the target's head. Maybe in that respect the GPS is also a decent choice.

The reload times are the same on every weapon. I have tried the reload trick on almost every weapon. I actually used it on the Widow while taking down the Thresher Maw on Grunt's loyalty mission. The reload trick works best on shotguns and other slow firing weapons, but it can hurt damage output on fast-firing or automatic weapons.

For example, if you have the Geth Pulse Rifle or Locust, using the reload trick will actually hurt you since the gun stops firing while you melee or cast a power.

Interesting. I had thought I saw that they were all supposed to be 1.5s but it has felt like the Claymore just is slower. Plus I don't recall having as much trouble screwing up reloads on the other weapons as I have on the Claymore by trying to reload and then break cover.

I get the "reload is cancelled by taking cover" bug with sniper rifles aswell. I guess their reload animation is longer.

I think it is partly just the frequency I have to reload the Claymore and then try to enter or exit cover. or hit a power. Probably biases my memory.

I do forget to reload the Mantis sometimes. That's a different issue though :) Never had to reload the Widow because you shoot it once and every enemy dies...

For Sarah_SR2, or anyone else looking to see how the reload trick works, I just put up two videos showing it in action.  I included a few rounds where the trick is not used ( noted ) so you can see the big difference in rate.

I was at the end of Thane RM, after the Collector ship Trap, and I had a full set of ammo after that last vanguard, so I posted two versions

Normal Speed

Half Speed

Note: I am not the greatest at the trick, and its a lot harder to do when trying to aim while a merc is moving, but its how ya do it.
