Well today I just bought the game off steam and after it downloaded and installed without a hitch I started it up. However the characters are ripped and full of holes. So I wonder is this a problem with my computer? How do I fix it.

I would guess a graphics card issue.
Tip: the resident troubleshooters, they who know their stuff, require system specs and various other bits of info as outlined in the sticky in order to help you effectively; otherwise they'd just be 'shooting in the dark' and can't help you resolve the issue.

Sounds like a gpu/driver issue. As OBaka said, in order to help we need system specs, and driver versions. Refer to this thread for the info we need.
