I've installed Mass Effect 2 before. Played through it and completed it without a problem. However, a while back I had my hard drive replaced and after deciding to try re-install Mass Effect 2 due to the upcoming sequel I  have encountered a annoying error every time I've tried.

If I try use the games auto launcher I end up getting many different erros, however they all have the same title.

There is an issue with the following XML.

Trying to install directly from setup.exe works for about 2 minutes, then it stops, stating that the "Data file could not be found, or the disc has been removed." This results in an immediate termination of the installation.

I have searched google and have come up with nothing. The only other person who posted this exact same problem had a second optical drive which they used to try install it, which is not the case for me. My optical drive installs all other games perfectly however.

I have a physical copy of the disc, which is basically scratch free.

I am using a laptop, and its specs are as follows:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
Intel Core i7 CPU Q 740 @ 1.73 Ghz
4 Gigs of RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650

Please help me! I really want to get this thing installed in time for ME3 :crying:
Is there anything I can do aside from downloading the whole game off the website? :(

Looking more in depth through the archive has shown me about 4 other cases of this exact problem. Either they were never solved (after 2 years) or the answer required the use of another computer or cd drive all together. Is there nobody that's found a proper solution?

Before anything else, you need to complete the documentation in your personal profile here, adding any Bioware games you want to inquire about.  You have queries in two different tech forums for two different games, neither of which shows up here in the forums.

For as long as I have had experience with EA's production of game disks, the sort of thing you've run into has existed, but the archives would tell you everything you need to know about that. There is additional DRM code in place that disrupts the install when you use a variety of write-capable drives, although works fine with read-only drives.

Various work-arounds are possible, as your searching should have already revealed. Sometimes the copy function in Windows is better able to deal with the disks than the version used during an install, so you can create a folder (folders for multi-disk games) on your HDD, copy everything there, and install using that copy.

Sometimes you can borrow an external disk drive from a friend, and install that way. Personally, I would use an older read-only Sony DVD drive on my home LAN in a PC used mainly as a Printer server for my old model laser printers, and install across the LAN.

Lastly, use the disk registration information to unlock a digital download from EA's Origin system, and go from there (you'll have to uninstall as much of the disk based version as did get installed).

Thank you, I'm sorry about not registering my game on the site, it slipped my mind as I was really intent on finding a solution to my problem and after looking at the *Read First* topic in the Mass Effect Forum, I did not see it as a requirement to posting a problem. I have registered my game now though. =/

Also, with regards to posting in the DA 2 Forum, the problem was identical to what I am currently experiencing, and I noticed that it had never been answered.

Once again, thank you VERY much for the advice! I'm really eager to get my game started again. And Merry X-Mas :)

My problem won't solve... I've tried copying the game to my hard drive but it freezes when trying to copy the "movies" folder in the "data" folder.
I think I might just have to try and re-purchase another copy, seeing that downloading the game isn't a logical option for myself.
I also don't have any other disc drives or external hard drives.

Thanks for trying anyway, sorry if I caused you any trouble. :(

No real "trouble", I enjoy visiting with nice folks like you, and I see that I'd not offered the Season's Best to you yet. Christmas has gone for another year, so have a Happy New Year.
