Any possibility that Bioware might try a story that isn't just like the doom series?

You know, you can actually compare the overarching plot of all Bioware games to Doom. Especially Dragon Age. You are a special soldier who must fight your way through hell spawn to kill the leader.

Sounds exactly like Doom to me. In every Bioware game it's always done in the same manner. You become
super powerful and/or gather allies to have a huge show down against
the enem army. Why not do it the way they did in Lord of the Rings
where it's the little hobbits that save the day? I mean LotR at least
mixes the Doom formula up slightly by doing this. What kind of evil
overlord would anticipate their enemies attempting such a crazy and
reckless strategy?

I thought Doom was basically just Resident Evil in Space. Never understood the hype behind that movie.

You should mean that Resident evil is DOOM on earth, since DOOM came out first.

This thread could have much potential, addressing the generic way of storytelling in CRPGs, but this... might get locked.

This is standard Hero concept really. Not just in games but in movies too.

Wow nice handle, OP. Doesn't that translate to "Troll" in some language?

Yeah, they should have a different story arc. Like...you're born a farmer. In a peacefull world. Where nothing bad happens. And, see, you have to like, keep farming since nothing bad happens and you never end up leaving the farm to save the world because the world never needs saving! I bet that game'll FLY off the shelves!

The saga of the lone person who must vanquish legions of evil goes back to Gilgamesh and Enkidu. Even in modern 'mythology' you have the kid who faces great adversity to defeat the bad guy. Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. Frodo Baggins and Sauron. Harry Potter and Vordemort. These stories keep getting 'recycled' yet we eat them up for one very good reason. They appeal to us on a visceral level. So, why do game companies keep producing games with these same types of stories? Because enough people want them, and it's lucrative to do so.

There is also the resolution of the political situation and dealing with the different issues in the mid game locations.

The Darkspawn is the main story. But it is also about exploring the politics and different communities in Ferelden.

Edited the original post with more detail to try not to look like a troll.

And another thing, why do they even have to be "epic", "heroic", etc? Why do they even need to be good vs evil? Lots of great movies around that were quite succesful like the Godfather series, or Full Metal Jacket which was basically just a movie describing army life in the Vietnam war, and it ended when they were called home.

No the fact that your name is aowifpoaiwef aiuhguaiscjc asoihjasio and
your non registered means your a troll. And the fact that you are
basically bashing 95 % of all game platforms ever made adds to the fact
that your a troll.

It is an expensive blockbuster game. They may feel it needs an epic story hook.

Well I for one would love Bioware to try the Cyberpunk genre for a big RPG, with hacking skills, etc. Deus Ex was one of the best RPGs ever and Bioware could do their own spin on the genre with the same fundemental elements that make it so interesting. That's just my personal wish though. :)

How does Lord of the Rings mix up the Doom formula when Lord of the Rings was out first...? Wouldn't Doom have been mixing up the Lord of the Rings formula?
