and by that I mean....where are the reviews coming form the big online reviewers? Gamespot, IGN, TeamXbox, Game trailers, G4 (I know...joke of a site but they have a certain following)?
Smaller, less straffed saites/magazines have already published in depth reviews. Gamespot usually even announces the review several days ahead if the game gets a launch centre (like DAO)... so what's the deal?
so..uhmmmm....where are the big names?

After the game is released, maybe? Like most games?

No, not really. They did send out "review copies" for a reason. I think they forced a EULA or something that prevented reviewers from writing reviews before release (except for monthly magazines - which might be why they're releasing at the beginning of the month).
As to why they did this - who knows? Maybe they were worried about reviewers hating on the genre more than the game itself?

In Germany online mags are not allowed to post reviews until tuesday (well some did, but without scores) ... maybe it's the same or similar for the US/UK mags.

There's an embargo until the 3rd.

Game Informer is the only place I know that routinely reviews games before release. Gamespot almost always waits til release day or a few days after. Game Informer's review is very positive though.
www.gameinformer.com Search the site a bit, you'll find it.

I'm not sure why IGN etc. have not posted reviews yet. Surely they will any day, or even hour, now... As far as magazines go it doesn't get any bigger than PC Gamer here in the UK and they've put DA:O on their cover this month - I posted about it here

It might be their policy IGN, TeamXbox, and G4TV to not review a copy in till the game is released.

I don't know if you notice it but GI was not in the list of the "big names"
I know GI reviewed thew game I actually have that issue on my desk
also as a side note IGN, GS and sometimes GT review games days before release (just look at Batman AA)

Very rarely (if ever) do I recall G4 doing an actual review prior to a games release... sure they will give preview blurbs, but they dont score things til after they come out.

Another tidbit from PC Gamer in the UK... "It's [Dragon Age: Origins] that is the real star. The last two months have been excruciating. We've had Dragon Age in the office for what feels like an epoch, and John's been raving about how sensational it is almost daily. It's hard enough to keep any secret around here, but especially one as juicy as how good Dragon Age really is. Well, finally, we can say it. Dragon Age is brilliant. It's also absolutely huge. If you're planning on playing it, I suggest putting a few weeks aside. Or maybe a few months."

i have read 3 reviews now, and they all say pretty much the same
+ story very intense
+ decision choices (not just good and evil) very atmospheric
+ combat intense and demanding
+ making addicted
- graphics - mimics great - rest - textures, landscape etc..not so much - engine to old
- npc behaviour often unrealistic / no consequences (stealing, murdering etc.)
- combat simpler then d&d with less tactic variety
well very good with some flaws...but for me an rpg is all about story story story :-)

I don't pay attention to console mags/sites, but IGN does pre-release reviews all the time.
In fact, I remember when I bought FO3 it was reviews that persuaded me to go out at midnight to pick it up instead of waiting for a week or two, as I had previously planned (I was exceptionally busy with work at the time and would have been through early November)

Nemesis that is not the point really. Just the reviews coming from those sites (especially IGN and GT) are much more indept and usually have extra goodies
still I am wondering why they are holding back

The big sites (IGN, PC Gamer, etc) don't violate embargo, that's the price of quality.

I would say its the sheer size of the game. The better reviews will be from those that give the game more time.

Seeing how Brutal Legend got no review a day before release, it seems quite natural.

ok so basically you are saying that a magazine (note we have had magazines say that DAO is a diablo-like hack and slash among other idiocities) knows more than one of the developers who personally confirmed there is no embrago on these forums?
that
or you are saying the devs are lying to us

Perhaps there is a concept that a "review" should be published after the game's release date, as distinct from a "preview" which can be published beforehand. So, print magazines are putting out their reviews because they expect to be selling after release, but online sources are restrictng themselves to previews, news pieces and "hands-on" articles.

well devs are lying all the time - not in the bad meaning, but not to spoil things, besides, if there is an embargo it doesnt come from the dev but rather from the publisher
