The big sites (IGN, PC Gamer, etc) don't violate embargo, that's the price of quality.

uhm...again...for the zillionth time

the developers said that there is no embrago

There's always an embargo, if the developers said there wasn't then they're likely trying to avoid accusations of "bribing for good reviews".

Embargo's are necessary especially with big games like this because as that lovely PC gamer quote indicates often reviewers will get their pre-release copies well before the actual release date.  Giantbomb did their PC quicklook in the first week of October afterall.  The embargo is usually there to stop reviewers from just spilling everything about the game once they get their hands on it. (usually for marketing reasons)

If there's an embargo for the third then we'll likely see a half dozen reviews pop up that day.

well devs are lying all the time - not in the bad meaning, but not to spoil things, besides, if there is an embargo it doesnt come from the dev but rather from the publisher

LOL but why lie about an Embargo?

as it stands a developer is a better and more accurate source of information than a magazine.

oh and Sheff, that makes no sense...plenty of games are reviewed by the big names way before they come out

The game could be great and the reviewers are all caught up in it and don't even want to write about it.until they finish it. It seems to be a big game, so I gamble the first reviews appear somewhere near X-mas. :P

crimzontearz, just ignore what anyone says and take a look around. No reviews from the big onlinemags, and the only reason the printed reviews are out is because it's usually a monthly issue and a pre-retail-review is worth something compared to a post-retail one.

Plus, the developer has most likely little to nothing to do with any embargos, that's what EA's for. Ask them.

And, yes, I believe the mag which said there is an embaro because at this point anyone could be the first and would pull a huge number of clicks. But they don't.

4players.de for example was told they couldn't rate their game until the 3rd when they got their review copy. So, what they did was to write half a review without the rating at the end. The other half comes up once the game drops.

If you follow the industry at all, there's constant misinformation and misquoting that goes on both in regard to press embargoes as well as other information in regard to leaks. Mistakes are made all the time, and publishers and developers alike go back on their word constantly. I don't necessarily mean to say this is a terrible thing; just don't necessarily lead yourself to believe that all info from a developer is reliable.

Regardless, where exactly did you see this? And you wonder why games are reviewed by "big names" before they come out---this is because those are generally promotional reviews to reignite the hype machine and give the publisher some quotes to work with in advertisement. Game Informer was the one to do this for Dragon Age. That 9/10 score is toted in every advertisement you can see on TV.

And the entire PR campaign around this game has been directed at people who don't play CRPGs to try and get them to buy this product. This is the new ****, after all... LOL

"Another Great Bioware RPG!!!" could actually prove detrimental to these efforts.

I know Jeff Haynes from the IGN playstation team is doing the review for the PC and the 360, I tried to contact him about when the review will be up but he hasn't responded yet.

IGN doesn't update on weekends, and I'm not sure why everybody expects them to be on time anyways. Their reviews are often late - Overlord II for example wasn't reviewed until almost a week after release.

The thing is, they won't buy the game, they will just go for MW2 or some other blockbuster game coming out.

DA:O is the biggest release this week, so expect reviews Monday and Tuesday.

Note: Embargoes aren't necessarily there to keep bad scores from reaching the public, although that is one concern. The primary concern is that publishers want as much of the games media focused on the game as possible close to release - reviews are essentially advertisements for the game so long as it isn't panned. It's more effective to be firing on all cylinders to get as many different potential consumers as possible buying the first run of the game so retailers buy more to restock their shelves (and to keep digital orders steady). It's all about marketing.

It would have been nice if the reviews came out somewhat before, because for games like this, positive reviews mean more sales.

Of course positive reviews mean more sales. But consumers who are both quite interested and review sensitive and see the reviews after release can still buy the game. Folks who don't really pay attention to release dates/RPGs/etc. or those who might buy on impulse based on a positive review might forget about the positive reviews by the time the game is released; this way, all the information is released when it's the most relevant to the consumer.

Because if the big names post a review early then EA will pitch a fit and then make them take all of the reviews down... sounds like Sacred Ashes anyone? Sorry, I am still kinda mad about the whole EA buying Bioware thing lol

Well, some of the bigger gaming sites will give this game a lower score than most of you will like.

They seem to favor graphically stunning games above all.
Dragon age "dated" look will seriously hamper it's overall score. (Especially true for the 360 version).

Luckily, we know what's most important in games.^_^

Any embargo would be down to the publishers, not the developers.
Trust me, there's an embargo in place. :)

Developers and Marketing types generally don't communicate and even when they do, they do not actually understand each other.

I too read about that online embargo, however, all the big german print mags are out now and all praise it.
PC Games: 91, Gold Award
PC Action: 91
Gamestar: 92, Platinum Award and extra star for excellent story

All mention that the graphics are good, but not really up to date, some washed-out textures here and there (pretty much like Mass Effect). Gamestar mentions it has a surprising amount of bugs for a Bioware game, none of them major though.

Well, you and I agree that it's probably a foolhardy effort to reach out to these people.  The world will be a better place when publishers accept that CRPG is a niche and they just focus on us.  Now, we need to convince EA.  LOL

A great example:  I was looking at Assassin's Creed 2 yesterday.  I thought it was just another dumb Prince of Persia clone, but after looking at it for about an hour I decided that I would probably really enjoy this game.  But the marketing campaign would have never appealled to me.
