I am wondering if there is a way to have just a specific party member hold position? I know how hold position works i just have not figured out how to hold just a single party member or even if there is a way.
My problem is this my party consists of Me (DPS mage), Wynne (heals only), Leliana (bow), and Allister (sword and board tank) and the party tactic is set for Leliana, Allister to target what ever i am targeting. What my issue is, is that if i use the party hold function when i have collected aggro on Allister and want to switch back to my MC if something breaks away and targets me (i do massive DPS and do not manage my aggro lol) if the team is in hold position mode when i select that target, Allister will not chase it, but if i release the team so Allister can chase it, to get it off me Wynne and Leliana also start moving around like lottery balls during a drawing. Even if i set Leliana and Wynne to ranged attack they invaribly work thier way right smack into the middle of the melee, and take unnecessary damage.
What i want to do is before a pull set Wynne and Leliana in a spot and say do not move, while allowing Allister to roam around attacking what ever target i have selected. So far all i can do is set everybody into hold position mode or free roam mode and it is kind of annoying.

As for myself I just disable tactics except useful things like heal and decide by myself what I want them to do. In combat mode they won't move unless you tell them to. I don't know if this is the best way or if it will work throughout the whole game but for now it works fine for me.

Take a look at the descriptions for the overall behaviors you can choose (upper right dropdown menu on the tactics screen). Some of them state the character won't attack unless directed by the player. I think that may be the closest you're going to get at the moment.

Thanks guys for the replies, i have seen the right side tactics drop down and have Leliana and Wynne set to ranged attack and they still run up into the melee sometimes. I have also tried to set them to cautious and they do a little better but they still popcorn around a bit more than i would like. I was hoping for a way to force specific party members to hold thier position while allowing other party members the freedom to move around. Hopefully there will be a patch or a mod to this effect sometime in the future.

I actually have the same exact team setup that you've described here, asaiasai, and I experience the same issues. There is no perfect solution, I'm afraid.
I play as Alistair when out of combat so that the other characters trail behind. As soon as we find ourselves in combat, I call for my team to hold position. Assuming the enemy is approaching from the front, my team is automatically positioned to my liking. With Alistair up front, I have him engage the enemy as (if) they draw near. As soon as he engages, I give Leliana and my main character their targets and order my team to move freely.
I have my Leliana on passive (prefers ranged weaponry and retaliates if attacked, otherwise waits for my order before engaging). The ranged behavior option causes her to engage the enemy immediately, before Alistair has drawn their attention, and that can result in a mess.
Wynne I have set to cautious (won't retaliate when attacked, completely avoids combat unless ordered). Keep in mind that whenever your team is allowed to move freely, any character that is not participating in combat will attempt to make its way to whichever character you are controlling at the moment (unless occupied with casting a spell/talent). This is the AI behavior that is the cause for most of the "popcorning about" that I tend to notice in combat.
One workaround to this issue is to order Wynne to attack Alistair's target with her staff. As long as she is engaged in combat, she won't move to your active character's position unless her line of sight to the target becomes blocked. However, keep in mind that she will still run about should she find herself the target of an AOE attack.
That is all the advice I can think to offer. Success with this setup requires a good deal of micro management.

thanks Korvayer, i have tried several of the suggestions, and it does work it just takes more micromanagment than i felt should be necessary. I pretty much do everything you do including using pretty much the same team make up it just seems that there could be a simple fix where you could either assign a party formation, or lock a specific character in a location. As a former player and tank driver in WoW i use as often as possible the "pull" principle, tuck everybody but the tank back, controlling allister either shoot the enemy with a bow or just run into the room to generate the aggro then run back to the spot i intend to use as the kill floor, while the rest of the team waits for me (controlling Allister) to return. I do not want to use the term "sloppy programming", but i do think the ability to hold individual characters in a spot while allowing others free roam is an oversite by the developers, at least i hope.

Yeah, I agree. We should have been provided with the ability to lock individual team members in place. Hopefully, you'll have access to that feature in a future patch or mod. Being that I'm on the Xbox 360, I'm just going to have to work with what I've got.
