- That level on Red Dead Redemption where you were on the machine gun in the back of a car, with lots of guys throwing dynamite at you.
- That level on Ghostbusters the Video Game where you had to slime tether or slam the stone cherubs into a gate to open it.
- Trying to beat Father Rodin on Bayonetta.
- Any level on Republic Commando where there were Super Battle Droid dispensers that you didn't take out immediately.

that one level in bowsers caastle where you had to have the right combinations of jumping up and down the hallways or the hallway loops forever in the old old mario game.

nintendo-hard all the way.

also that one corridor in l4d2 where you're in the kiddy land and you have to open these gates. the mobs do not stop spawning, its seriously built that way.

any God of War game on the hardest dificulty setting (ironically named god mode if recall correctly)

I'm assuming you mean it's ironic because God Mode is usually incredibly easy?

The answer to this question really relies on one thing...are we saying "hard because the game cheats", or "hard because it's unforgiving"??? If the former, Superman 64. You could throw Battlefield 3 in this category as well, but I still managed to get through the cheating single player mode. If the later...the only one that comes to mind is the plane mission at the end of COD4 on Veteran.

Frankly, I don't tend to play much in the way of difficult games, because they usually side on the former...where they make up for not being able to make SMARTER AI by giving you no health and upping the enemies...or by having you die by random explosions (calling the mortar strikes). If a game actually makes the AI smarter, then I'm all for it.

"One Shot, One Kill" in Call of Duty 4 (on Veteran difficulty of course). That ferris wheel section was absolute murder.

Hmm, I did that on my fourth try (IIRC) :P. I laid claymores around the perimeter and gaps. Then, I just ran to the far side of the electric car platform got on my belly and head shot, then ran behind the trees farther back, then headshot more. Then when the timer was getting close, I starting using my grenades moving back to my wounded buddy, gunning until I got him on my back, then made the heli.

I cannot remind myself of any frustration as of the moment. There are many titles that bring the sense of awe to me. The arcade shooter stuff, this in particular:

Playing Ninja Gaiden Black on "Master Ninja" mode was hard anywhere in the game, three hits, game over.

But one of the hardest scenes I ever encountered was in Rainbow Six Vegas on the stage scene in Dantes Theatre. That was brutal.

Taking on "Grace and Glory" (or their clones) in "non-stop Climax" mode in Bayonetta.

Someone said Battletoads.
does being so f-ing hard that the only way to get by is using game genie count? Cause I don't find that difficult I find it flat out impossible.
The last world from Mario 3 comes to mind.
Some of the puzzles in Braid are hurting my brain currently lol.

Anyone here play the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game for the NES? Try beating that game with some of the jumps involved. The most painful games for me have always been the ones that required perfect jumps when the jumping mechanics in a game aren't good.

Nope. I could name levels or entire games that were hair pulling in difficulty, but the pattern is always the same: lose, repeat, memorize, overcome. Once that happens it gets steadily easier until one day, it isn't hard at all. The only time I've ever felt anything resembling hate is directed inward, when I screw up in a way I shouldn't have and lose because of it.

I don't know there are pretty difficult levels and games. Something like the Lawnmower man took me like 10 years to beat, no lie. That game was beyond difficult, but maybe it was because I got that game when I was like 8 years old. Battletoads and Double Dragons game, though, had perfect difficulty. The vehicle missions were still a pain, though, like the older ones.

Anyone play the SNES game Rival Turf? That game was pretty freaking hard.

Mount Gagazet in FFX offers a.......... sharp learning curve....
As do final areas in Xenosaga Episode II
Not that you can't do them, but they are a challenge compared to the game up that point...

As I wrote, I have yet to run into a challenging game or level that roused sheer hatred out of me. Most of the commonly considered difficult games were a cakewalk for me after I memorized them. Battletoads, Batman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Dracula's Curse, Bayou Billy, ect. The only such games I never finished were Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Gaiden III. The former because I didn't have enough time with it to figure out how to kill the demon after Jaquio. It was a rental. The latter because it wasn't as fun as the first two and I lost interest.

In every other case I finished a difficult game after relenlessly plugging away. Not only am I stubborn, I consider it a personal failing when a game forces me to give up. I suppose it's the only aspect of gaming I'm prideful about. Because I don't care about losing to others or being the best EVAR. I'll never be that.

In my experience the hardest games eventually become trivial by repetition. It's only a matter of time before I figure out all the patterns, and I know I'm not unique in that. All those no deaths, no continues/reloads videos on YouTube prove it's possible. It can take weeks or months, but it's inevitable if I obssess enough over a game. At least that was the case with games of previous generations. All they are is glorified memory tests.

Speaking of old games, I finished Rival Turf too. Although I had to do it with the cop character; whatever his name was. After awhile I began to realize the skinny protagonist guy (Jack, I think?) lacked punch with his attacks. Whereas the cop's throws were pretty nasty and easier to land. That was a such a tedious game. -_- Nowhere near as fun as Streets of Rage on Genesis. Although using that cheat option to rename all the enemies was hilarious. My friend and I used to rename the end boss Al Bundy. :P

In more recent times, I'd say something like Ninja Gaiden 2 on Master Ninja Mode (the 360 version, not the gimped PS3 version). Particularly the Tests of Valor...

Not many difficult games nowadays, need to look back to the days of the NES/SNES for some real rippers.

On the original Nitendo trying to land your plane in top gun or trying to mid air refuel. At times i was one of the angriest kids in my neighborhood when i played that game.

Wizardry 4
The 7 Gorrors from Wizardry 7
Ninja Gaiden (Stupid birds)

But seriously Wizardry 4 is considered by many the hardest RPG ever made and the 7 Gorrors in Wiz 7, though optional bosses, would destroy your team even at Lvl 99.

You just need to know where to look. Not all of the new uber-difficult games are going to be retail.

Here, have some free anguish and pain.

Master Ninja Mode? Holy crap, my husband and I both played NG2 on 360, and we both had our butts handed to us, repeatedly...and probably on the easiest difficulty. It didn't take long for this game to morph into store credit for us.

Final boss fight in Gears of War 1. I think the only way you can actually win it on insane is by glitching RAAM.

Wasn't that the game that was completely unbeatable on one platform because of a broken level design?

I did it on insane without glitching. Had one more sniper round and that was lucky that it killed him but yeah I agree totally with you that it was hard as hell.

I'm going to say the last escort part of dead space 1 on impossible was damn near impossible.

The library on Halo CE (NOT THE REMAKE) in the orignal it was dark as HELL!

The southearn boat level on Hitman Blood money was just hell as I remember it.

thats level is an example of games being much harder 'back then', me and my brother rage quit on normal (co-op) the first time we tried it about a year ago (we did a thing where we played all the FPS halos co-op in story order)

A boss in an old Zelda game that would knock you off the platform again and again and again and again.

You did not die...but you did have to do it a lot to finally win.
It took me around 30 tries to finally get his pattern down and win, and oh god was that a long time to play on my old gameboy.
