thats level is an example of games being much harder 'back then', me and my brother rage quit on normal (co-op) the first time we tried it about a year ago (we did a thing where we played all the FPS halos co-op in story order)
What do you think are some of the hardest levels in gaming

-It's not strictly a level, but in Might and Magic 1, there's a clearing where you encounter a council of dragons. I played this game for months on end, my guys were obscenely high levels, I had huge buffs...and I could not beat that encounter. Ever.
-Impossible Mission for the C64, aptly named.
-IIRC, the NES Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had a nightmare of a sewer level.
-Panzer General 2's Washington DC map was incredibly hard to get a decisive victory on.
-Any C64 era RPG, in those days they were designed with the intention that you'd lose some or all of your party for the first 3 levels. You were supposed to cycle through new characters until you eventually got everyone up to around level 3. The Bard's Tale, Phantasie, Wizardry, Ultima 1 through 3.
More modern games I find really easy.
Actually, it was bugged in some versions, like the C64. I don't recall what the bug was, you can google it up I'm sure, but you essentially had to use the cheat to beat it because they had introduced a bug in the conversion.

-Original Ghosts and Goblins. If I'm correct, it was ported straight from an arcade console, where you're supposed to dump quarters in to beat the damn thing.

Every level in The Operative: No One Lives Forever but specifically, the ones where you play flashback from Cate Archer's past as a crimminal. No guns, and having to avoid the police (some in really odd places for coppers to be)
PS if you guys haven't checked this game out, you should. Very well done story, lots of surprising plot twists, and good 60s/70s style pop culture comedy.
Also, the final level in the Spyhunter re-boot gave me fits.

Anything involving a Rajang in Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. Blazing speed, huge damage and wide, difficult to dodge attacks, combined with intense aggression and maybe the only Rage mode worse than a Tigrex.
Dark Souls. Enough said.

Huh? Is that the first one? I finished that game but can't remember that particular level. T'was some time ago though, so maybe I forgot.
Great game though!
As for difficult levels: I think the last game I was really really frustrated with was Aquanox (the last two levels). Maybe I did something wrong but it took me almost a week of trials to finish that game (final cutscene was worth it though, great ending).
Nowadays my gaming is pretty much limited to RPGs which I never find too difficult because I am a completionist, doing every side quest and optional mission. That way I end up with very powerful characters and the games get rather easy at the end. The few shooters I play, I usually don't play on the highest difficulties so most of the real challenges I remember in games are from the 90s and early 2000s.

I did it on insane without glitching. Had one more sniper round and that was lucky that it killed him but yeah I agree totally with you that it was hard as hell.alex90c wrote...
Final boss fight in Gears of War 1. I think the only way you can actually win it on insane is by glitching RAAM.
I'm going to say the last escort part of dead space 1 on impossible was damn near impossible.

I didn't find the Library that bad. I'd much bigger issues in the first hangar of Truth and Reconcilliation. I was stuck on that for ages on Legendary. The Flood became a much bigger problem for me in later games.
I'll agree on Raam though, he had me bloody tortured on Insanity. I emptied a full clip of torque bow rounds into his face, all my sniper ammo with mostly perfect active reloads went into his face too and he was STILL coming. I eventually got lucky and my last grenade took him down.

Killzone 2 final boss stage on hardest difficulty (forget the name), specifically the room where you have to fight like 60+ guards with like no cover and they can kill you in one burst of fire...its one of the straight up most challenging fights I've done...although the boss was jokes, you light him one fire then melee him because he glitches lmao

The Last Stage of Ninja Gaiden.
The Island of the Mana Tree in Secret of Mana. If you didn't nab the uber-gear beforehand, you will get your butt handed to you.
Giant Killer Fish in Majora's Mask, in the Zora Temple. That was one of the tough fights.
Ultima Weapon from Final Fantasy VIII. If you didn't abuse the holy war potions and the like, it was a brutal fight. Also, a complex way of getting the encounter.

I was one of those that maxed out everything before fighting him so it was actually pretty easy. But some of the c'ieth stone missions are nearly impossible

Halo: Combat Evolved
The Truth and Reconciliation on Legendary.
Specifically when you board the Covenant vessel via the grav lift with a couple of marines and have to fight 6 or 7 waves of Elites and then Hunters. Cant count the amount of attempts that took me
