Ok, who wants us to cut dialog so you can have flowing hair? Hands up for a count please.
Everything in a game takes up space. Dialog = space. VO = space. Art = space. Animations = space. Hair movement = space. Some things are more important than other things and the dev team balances out all of the elements that go into a game. Animated hair, in our opinion, is not as important as more areas to explore, dialogs to be had, etc.
Then can I please get some Hair and Beard DLC?

No offense Mr Priestly, but I do believe there are plenty of games with much more realistic hair than Mass Effect but still as much content and dialogue as Mass Effect. The Witcher 2 comes to mind.
Now I'm not saying that I don't take your word on it that the devs probably have good reasons to keep the hair more simple and less realistic, but as a game-design-student I'm really curious why some video-game series (such as Mass Effect) can only have lots of dialogue OR realistic hair (according to you), while other series (such as the Witcher) have lots of dialogue AND realistic hair.

Does this work the other way too? Hands up if you want more dialogue/physics instead of MP/kinect?

Simply put, Bioware simply thinks other things are higher priority, we may not agree with them (Kinect I'm looking at you) but the programmers probably have lists of things to check off and hair is probably one of the lower things on the scale.
(seriously, 6 pages talking about Hair physics? A physics that doesn't even get used it you choose a short hair model?)

I have to agree with some of the previous posters, I'd trade multiplayer and kinect for hair physics in a heartbeat.
Nut just hair physics, but proper cloth and wind physics, at least somewhat. Liara's outfit strangely staying contorted to her bodyshape and not moving at all is kind of weird in the middle of a firefight with lots of movement. Or when she's wearing a dress. The leg area looks like it's fused into her body.

Can the 360 do realistic hair? Then yeah, it probably is possible.

Yeah, it can. Gears of War 3 did it just fine, and on 1 disc. Devil May Cry 4 did it too, and that was from 2007 I believe. If DMC4 didn't do it realistically, then it was at least animated in a realistic fashion.

I'm all for animated hair like in Arkham City, but i'm just glad they are adding more hairstyles. I was disapointed the first time popping ME2 in to discover it had the exact same hairstyles as ME1 did with barely no change. The short hair selections were all sucky compared to default Shepards.
wait there are MORE hair styles????
ALL IS FORGIVIN!

Yes. Eezo makes everyone completely hairless. Aliens have accepted it, but humans like their hair so LEGO Industries makes plastic headpieces for military use. New styles have been added every year.

Are we talking about an hour worth of dialogue? The absense of a side mission? What? Thanks in advance.

Maybe take out all the cut dilogue and cutscenes in ME3 unlike you in ME2? What the ****? Not that I actually give a **** about "realistic hair physics".Chris Priestly wrote...

Why do you always have to make it an either-or situation though? You make it sound like there's just a small team working on this.
Team size has nothign to do with it. I'm sure if the team wanted it, they could have motion hair (as pointed out, teh Unreal engine does fine work with that feature). It is an either or situation though. Either it is in taking up the space to have it in or it isn't and somethign else is used in that space. We prefer to put in content rather than, what is essentially, a limited vanity item.
Most of the disk space mass effect uses is pre-rendered cutscenes so i'd guess that's what they'd be cutting but i have no idea. It's pretty platform specific as other people have pointed out, space on a pc and PS3 isn't that big of an issue but the 360 which uses DVDs and can have tiny hardrives it can become a serious limitation.stonbw1 wrote...
Being ignorant re game designing/capacity, can anyone put into perspective Chris' comments as to what type of content might be left off the game in favor of hair animations? I'd assume we could limit the hair animation to main/dialogue characters, rather than every single figure ever seen in the game.

This is an interesting defence of the poor looking hair in Mass Effect given the inclusion of multiplayer, isn't it?

Um... honestly, if the "areas to explore" end up like all the "areas to explore" in DA2, I'd want animated hair instead. You guys seem to be prioritizing based on "amount of content" these days instead of "quality of content". So in conclusion, I'd want flowing hair over another dumb courier mission.
That's my two cents.

You should just chalk up to BioWare not bothering with making hair improvement a high priority. I don't think it really is a case of quantity over quality.Luc0s wrote...

It will not cause too many heart attacks to people who need to actually take few steps and change discs. And HDD is not a new invention, you know?

That it is. Why cut dialog when you can cut features that no one would actually mind were absent in the long run since the series was OK without them in the first place. I'll take more realistic hair over Kinect and multiplayer.Dark_Caduceus wrote...

Or just add that damn extra disc and don´t cut things. Multiple discs have not killed too many people before and you won´t be sued even if someone dies while changing disc.

Of course, I've loved two Mass Effect games that did not have hair physics, and it will not make or break ME3 for me, but it would be very much appreciated.
