The Arcane Warrior has the possibilities of getting decent combat buffs and
to wear Strength affording equipment by his Spellpower.

Question is: Can Mages( or at least AW's) be able to equip other weapons than staffs?
Swords for instance.

Actually, it's Magic, afaik.

As for the question - yes, they can. Afaik, the equipment anyone can equip is only limited by your stats, never - or very rarely - your class (or specialization). Swords would presumably have STR restrictions - and as an AW, you'd use your magic stat instead.

I beleive only staves were class restricted. Give or take some very special items, but you can wear a shield and a sword if you're a mage, if you like. Unless you're an AW (and even then still a bit), you'll just suck at it.

Unless you get spell penalties with heavy armour, like in DnD.

Actually the only issue I see as a future Arcane Warrior is the Stamina cost for the Massive Armor. I'm not sure how this will effect a Mage type since we wont have the Talents that reduce the effect like Warriors do. Also I guess a problem could be that while your Magic skill will allow you to use the awsome 2hander you find I'm sure the typical Mage stats wont help you hit with it very well.

P.S.

There are no spell penalties listed on armor.

You forget sth:- Arcane Warrior get +5 on attack
-The Combat Magic Talent gives you when activated bonus to damage and attack
-Aura of Might upgrades Combat Magic and gives defense and further damage and attack bonus

P.S.: Fatigue on heavy armors is not only for talents, but also for Magic Spells

The fatigue bonus sucks, but once you get fade shroud the mana regen bonus should definitely help offset that. Plus you probably won't find really good massive armor until fairly late in the game, and fade shroud is a level 16 skill. It might all work out well.

I'll give one little spoiler...

There is one sword in the game that ONLY an arcane warrior can wield.

I think of the Arcane Warrior like the Fighter / Mage dual class in DnD.  That was my character of choice in the original BG for PC back in the day.  I remember once I was far enough along there was a rare elvish armour (mithril chain perhaps?) that allowed for spellcasting.  Oh what a wonderful piece of armor! ;)
This go-around I'm looking to make a Drizzt character for my first playthrough (since I'm currently reading the Legend of Drizzt books).  I'm thinking a rogue, heavy on the dual wielding, with light armor and a few choice spells.  I just wish they had options for blue skin and violet eyes!

I can't wait for Tuesday!

Me too, buddy, me too ;)
But i prefered Vecnas Robe. That was a Turbo-Mage with Boomsticks!

Why blue skin? As i remember the books they were described to have ebony coloured skin.
Thats brown/black with some shine effect.

well magic just fulfills the requirement it won't give bonus the way strength and constitution do so they'll still be way behind warriors in skilled armour use.

Yes... and no.

1. Your Magic Attribute will ALWAYS let you use Strength dependent equipment.
2. Your Spellpower attribute( which is at least your Magic) will give you damage bonus equal to Strength bonus
+ you will get overall damage - and other- bonuses when you get the 2. and 3. Talent of the AW talents.
3. Constitution is minimal different: 2 HP-points difference per Lvl. Up. If you give always 1 point in Willpower,
, Magic and Constitution you should be fine( and you will have much better defense then warriors as a Mage)

Yes: AW/Mages will lack the weapon related talents. This means you will not make extra damage or stun your enemies with weapon attacks.
But: Why should you? You will have 2-4 Spells with Upkeep cost( about 100-160 Mana needed) and the rest will
        be used for damaging spells.

You can wear low level studded leather without being Arcane Warrior if you don't like the robe appearance and the main armor only adds around 2% fatigue.
