My daughter bought me Mass Effect 1 brand new on cd for Christmas, and at first whenever I hit "Configure" or "Play" I got an error message saying that the configure utility has encountered a problem and needs to close, but I downloaded the 1.02 patch and that sorted that problem out.

But now I still can't play the game as once I've hit play it just sits there on the loading screen doing nothing.

My pc has the following specs:

AMD Athlon 7750 Dual-Core 2.71GHz,
960MB of RAM,
nVIDIA GeForce 6100 nForce 430 graphics card,
Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio card,
400GB HD,
Running Windows XP Home.

Caveat: I've tried to find out whether my graphics card is up to spec, but unfortunately I've been unable to make a proper comparison between my card and the minimum required card, because nVIDIA's site is chronically lacking in hard technical data.

If anyone can help me out I would be massively grateful because this is a present from my daughter.

I wondered if the problem might be something to do with registering the game, but I can't find anywhere to register ME1, only ME2.  I've tried to check whether my video card is suitable, it's a nVIDIA GeForce 6100 nForce 430, but the information from EA and nVIDIA is scant and confusing on that issue.

Mass Effect must find an actual video card with its configuration program, and you have none.  You will have to get one and install it.  Don't just get the cheapest thing you can find, since that will be no better than the poor onboard chipset video chip that you have now.  You have to get one that was actually designed for playing games on.

Minimum System Requirements for Mass Effect on the PC
(Corrected from dumb, Pie in the Sky lies to the real thing)

Operating System:
Windows XP or Vista

Processor:
2.4+GHZ Intel or 2.0+GHZ AMD

Memory:
1 Gigabyte Ram (XP)
2 Gigabyte Ram (Vista)

Video Card:
NVIDIA GeForce 6 series (6800GT or better: 210, 310, 520, 7100, 7200, 7300, 7400, 7500, 7600 GS, 8200, 8300, 8400 GS, 8500, 9100, 9200, & 9300 are below minimum system requirements)
ATI Radeon X1650 XT or better (X1050, X1300, X1300 Pro, *X1550*, HD 2400, HD 3100, HD 3200, HD 3450, HD 3470, HD 4200, HD 4250, HD 4270, HD 4350, HD 4550, and (probably) HD 5450 are below minimum system requirements) no video device with Intel's name on it is supported in any way, shape, or form.

Hard Drive Space:
12 Gigabytes

Sound Card:
DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card and drivers

No offence, but why did you quote a post I made in a different forum? I rewrote and updated that post for this forum, as I had new information to impart.

Thanks for the link to the card comparison site. :)

Thank you for replying.

Sorry to double post but I need to ask one more question.

My shopping searches for GeForce 6800GTs has turned up a confusing array of prices. I'm seeing some 6800GTs for as little as £30, and others for over £200.

Are these totally different models? Should I stay clear of the cheaper ones? What's the score?

Your help is appreciated.

Computer gme developers expect people with older PCs and graphics cards to still use their games quite awhile, if the cards were originally very good, very fast (and expensive). The 6800 GT has been out of production long enough to practically be a collectors' item. It was last produced new about six years ago. A more modern equivalent is either the Geforce GT 240 or the GTS 250 cards, but after those, the Geforce pricing situation became too rich for anyone not committed to a favorite type.

AMD Radeons are just so much more reasonably priced. Either an HD 4770 or and HD 5670 / 6670 are going to be priced so very much more affordably than a GTX 550.

You should probably stay in the range that equates to $75-$80 in USD, although over here we've got a huge price split between buying from an online eTailer and going to a storefront operator, and excuse me if I've been out of the currency exchange loop so long I have no idea what that is in Pounds, Euros, Yen, or even Pesos.

I never suggest that anyone go to Best Buy, although Fry's is just fine.  You may need to wait on word from a fellow countryman for an eTailer in the same class of good pricing / good service that Newegg offers in the States, Canada, and China.

Glad I could help, and wish I'd thought of the warning about brick & mortar stores, rather than virtual ones, before now.

Here. Start with the 1.01a, then 1.02.
