Installation Failure

Hi all.  I saw DA:Origins on Amazon for a great price and finally jumped on board to play this game.  Now that the download has finished (very conveniently I was out of town for two days so I could let it run full throttle while away) I'm having trouble installing the game.  The installer always errors out while extracting high-resolution textures - it seems to die at the same place every time, though I don't get to see the file name very long because once the installer hits it the installer pops to an error dialog very quickly.  The installer just says "An installation failure occurred" with no helpful diagnostic message.  I have:
  • Rebooted
  • Updated to latest graphics drivers for nvidia 8800 GTS SLI cards
  • Updated the DirectX drivers
  • Tried running as administrator
  • Tried installing to a different area
  • Tried looking for an installer log file (no luck yet)
  • Opened a ticket with EA (no response yet)
  • Performed various google searches.
System Specs:
  • Core 2 Duo 6250(?)
  • Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
  • 4GB RAM
  • Tons of disk space available
  • Dual 8800 GTS cards (should be good enough?)
  • EVGA NF68A (nvidia 680i chipset)
Any ideas?   Thanks in advance.

The precise error message is: "The installation of Dragon Age: Origins has failed."

It certainly sounds as though your download included some bad packets, and you need to be running some sort of download manager that will be checking for errors while downloading. Yes, although it's quite old, the 8800 GTS is still good enough for this game, although SLI never worked well on it.

Thanks for the response, Gorath. Wish there were checksums published for this file so I could check. As it is I'm downloading again. *fingers crossed* Thanks for the 411 on SLI being problematic.

Just a note to say redownloading and reinstalling worked.

I have a similar problem accept my installation stops at packages/core/data/anims.erf and EA won't help me because I bought my game from "a second party" a.k.a. Best Buy.

Let me know if you need more specifics.

Indeed, more info would be helpful.  For example, what are your system specs, OS, and is this a digital download or a disc?

Related to the last point:  if it is a disc, some people have reported problems with certain DVD-RW drives installing the game... essentially a problem with the drive reading the second layer on the disc.  You could do a Google search using these terms...

site:social.bioware.com ultimate edition disc drive installation failure

... if you suspect the disc itself is bad, and you cannot return it to Best Buy, there is an option to download the game using your gamekey from EA's Origin download service for free.  See the FAQ pinned towards the top of this forum.

If it was a digital download, try setting Data Execution Prevention (DEP) to essential Windows services only (if you're not familiar with how to do this, do a quick google search for instructions on where the setting is).

Once you've done that, redownload the game. Then keep DEP off while you install the game.

From long, bitter experience when Origins first came out a group of us found that this was a culprit behind a number of installation failure errors, because it was interfering with download managers and/or the DA Installer. Failing on anims.erf was a classic symptom.
