Just wanted to write my thoughts, I have not been on the board in a while, but I finally finished the game.  I did get the game right when it came out, and I went quite a while without playing at all, but mostly I played a little here and there, and then I played a lot the last two weeks to finally finish.

A side note, I am 35, married with a couple kids who take up most of my time.  I loved Baldur's Gate which is why I bought the first Dragon Age which I thought was awesome.  I did not think it was as good as Baldur's Gate, but it was close, and I bought the PC version because I liked trying to make it play like BG as much as possible.  I tend to go through games as a fighter because it just seems easier to me.  I usually only go through games once just because I don't have a lot of free time, but I have the completist mentality: I like to try and find everything in the game.  I found that a big problem in this game because searching for treasure rarely found me anything worthwhile.  Onyx Fragment, Opal Fragments, Moth Eaten scarves, wet packet of incense.  I ended up ignoring most loot by the end, it was just a pain.

Combat was okay, but I much prefer DAO and Baldur's Gate.  I like positioning my team and using tactics.  Most of the time in DA2 I could just attack.  And the waves of enemies was ridiculous.  No way to plan for that at first, then you just had to assume examining a corpose in a cave would lead to a battle with waves of monsters.  It reminded me of playing Nija Turtles arcade as a kid where you fight soldier after soldier.  I played it again years later with my stepson, and it was fun to do again.  Then he wanted to go through again and I couldn't do it, it was just wave after wave of the same thing.

I did do some of the downloaded content that came out at first.  I have not done the last two yet, but may try those eventually.  I sided with the mages because it just seemed right, and that seems to be the right way to go through.  I did feel one way or another and did not like that I had to choose.  It seems like the story ends the same way no matter what you choose.

I romanced Isabella which did not quite seem the right thing to do, but she was hot and Merrill annoyed the crap out of me.  I did not let Merrill have her item she wanted after her companion quest and I usually tried to annoy her.  I always skipped her dialogue.  I kept Isabella in the party at all times since I was trying to romance her, but that didn't matter since you could only talk to her at her base anyway.  And you don't need a thief since you don't really get anything good in the treasure chests.

I also bought the Collector's Edition Guide.  I thought that was a beautiful book, but almost impossible to use.  The book for the first game was perfect.  This one you had to jump all around to find anything, and if you were looking for one specific quest it was very diificult to find.  You had to know the name of it and then you just had to go through from front to back until you found it.  I did like the story info at the back of the guide.

I started playing the game and got bored after doing all the side quests before going into the mines.  I did finally do that and it was pretty cool, and a nice sense of scope with how they dealt with the cut scenes and passage of time.  I thin I got bored again doing all the side quests and that is when I stopped playing for a while.  Then the game started to make more sense and the characters seemed more fleshed out.  I ended up playing almost every day for a couple weeks until I completed it.  The guyde started making a little more sense at that point.  The maps in the guide were darn near useless though since they don't really tell you anything item wise, but then I guess that didn't matter since the items weren't all that helpful.  And it didn't need too many maps since everything was reused at least 3 times.

It seems like most of what I have written is negative, and that is probably because that is what sticks out most in my mind.  As a whole I think it is a great game.  I don't play many any more, but this is definitely worth my time.  It was not as good as the first to me, but I look forward to the next one.  Armor on companions is necessary, especially since we only allowed 3 at a time.  Why have we moved backwards?  I recall Baldur's Gate having a party of 6.

I more or less feel the same way. The game isn't bad, just could be better. I would give this game a C+ I didn't bother buying the last big dlc and item pack.... I definitely won't pre order Dragon Age 3. If  it has near perfect reviews I will buy it when it comes out otherwise I would wait until DA3 would drop in price after a year of release.

You really don't need to justify your playing the game by giving us your vital statistics (35, married, kids, etc.).

Ha, it wasn't to justify my playing the game, it was to put it in perspective where I was coming from. I would have a very different review if I was in school or something.

Also, I agree with waiting on DA3 until it drops in price, although I might be suckered in again depending on what you get for pre-ordering.

I was suckered into pre-ordering DA2 because of all the extra goodies, but most of them ended up staying in storage the entire time. I don't see any point in pre-ordering DA3 to get exclusive storage clutter, though I will get the game eventually.

I always have a rogue on hand because I want the xp from disarming traps/picking locks. Yes, it is disappointing that most loot is trash. With the unreachable (without exploits) lv 50 cap, xp is at a premium, as I want the most powerful characters by the end of the game+dlc.

The worst thing about doing the side quests was that so many of them sent you to the same dungeons over and over. There were several times where I'd do 3-4 quests in a row that took place in the same exact warehouse or cave. I felt a severe case of deja-vu, and I'd have to take breaks from the game to break up the monotony.

I'm not going to pretend that I won't be buying DA3, though I do hate rushed games and I'm hoping for an overall better experience with the next game.

That was a good review of Dragon age 2 and a nice change from the usual tone of the forums.

I agree with everything Vince said. The side quest really took you out of the game......
