 Hi,
I recently bought Mass Effect on steam (got to love those winter sales), unfortunately however I have been experienceing multiple freezes during gameplay. At one point I did receive a "General Protection Failure", but this only ever showed up once.
I have done a bit of searching and it seems this problem has been around awhile and was supposedely fixed in Patch 1.02. I have also tried a few of the solutions that have been suggested, e.g, setting the pre-load frame to 1, double checking drivers, restarting the UAC...etc.
My system spec are the following:

CPU: Intel i5 2500k
GPU: Nvidia GTX 580
Sound Card: SB Creative X-Fi Titanium
8GB RAM
Windows 7 (64 bit)

Now, I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure my specs aren't the problem.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers.

First thing to try is to manually download and install the 1.02 patch, as there is a known bug where Steam only updates the executibles, and not the actual reference libraries that also cause the fault.

Also, the executibles need to be running in admin mode with xp compatibility

Cheers I'll try it out. Will update the situation when I can.

Installed the update, but the problem still occurs.
Both Mass Effect and Steam are running in admin.

Sorry, forgot to mention the other thing that Steam is reknowned for not doing, is installing DirectX 9.0c properly, especially on Win7/Vista machines. You might want to download the runtimes seperately and install it. ME1 and ME2 specifically require DX9, and DX10/11 arent backwards compatible enough for the games needs.

Also, might want to try verifying the Steam cache to ensure it did download and install the game properly.

Downloaded and replaced DirectX. I also verified the integrity of the steam cache, it located one fault which it re-installed.
After 30 min of gametime, the game froze once again...this is really starting to baffle me.
Thanks for the help so far, appreciate it.

Having freeze-up problems as well. Bought ME1 download recently from Origin. My screen keeps freezing about 15 seconds into the cut scene after you open the shuttle bay doors on Ferros. Once it freezes, the only way to escape (that I know of) is to turn off and restart the computer (Task Manager won't come up. Downloaded and installed the 1.02 patch and replaced DirectX, to no avail.

CPU: Intel Core i3 2.13G
GPU: Intel HD Graphics Core i3
Sound Card: RealTek HD Audio
4GB RAM
Windows 7 (64 bit)

Tips appreciated. If all else fails, is there a way to skip/bypass the cut scene? Thanks

Some users have reported that they can get some playability from the Intel grpahics by fiddling around with driver versions until they stumble across one that works.

Note that even should it work, you will be pushing the Intel chipset beyond its deisgned capabilities, leading to overheating and potentially frying the graphics.

One more question, if I can impose. Was in the market for a new computer anyway. Any recommendations for a brand/vendor for something this powerful? I've been looking at Alienware and Cyberpower, but am pretty clueless.  Cheers.

Alienware is way overpriced, and for the same sort of thing, you can choose better options. As to Cyberpower, check the eReferences sort of thing. It seems to me that quality control and service have been variable for that outfit (sometimes average, sometimes poor).

I've been building my own for maybe 25 years now, and most of my family and circle of friends now are using my builds, so I no longer try to suggest brands to any of them who don't want to wait for me to assemble a new one for them. I have to tell them they are on their own, just avoid "Best" Buy stores (lousy pricing).

As with Gorath, I tend to build my own, and tend to avoid brands.
Best advice I can give is to use Alienware as a guide for what you would like in a machine, and shop around elsewhere for the same thing, but better prices.

One crucial bit of advice, is that when it comes to ME1 and ME2, the Radeon series of video cards have better support for older games than Nvidia. Also when it comes to Radeon cards, out of the 4 digits that make up the card model, its the last 3 number that count. Hence, a Radeon HD5790 is a better card for gaming than a HD6450. The amount of RAM a card has is less important than the chipset thats driving it.

Once you have done some window shopping, you can always either post the machine specs here, or send via a PM, and will be happy to give you some feedback on your potential purchase. That way, you will know what sort ofgaming rig yoyu are about to spend your money on, and will be best prepared for nto only ME1-ME3, but also any future games.

Thirded on building your own, I have been doing that since at least 1996. Research specific parts before you buy, don't let one bad review spook you in a comments section, but if you see a repeating pattern of problems, skip the part.

Looks a pretty decent rig. The only other thing to bear in mind is the size of the drive, I would suggest either getting a larger one, or a secondary drive to go with the existing 160gb.
ME2 was about 25gb, ME3 will be at least that, possibly more, and after a while you may find yourself having to uninstall games in order to install a new one.
