hey,

so i want to start a new playthrough after some years of absence and disappointing newer titles.

since i have forgotten a lot i'd like to ask you some questions (i dont want to get too many spoilers by reading FAQs) since the game doesnt explain some mechanics:

i'd like to play a fighter dual classed into a thief from BG1 to TOB.

1) does str effect arrow damage? otherwise id max out dex, end and charisma (in this order). would i f up my character by doing so?

2) i remember there are some gloves of dex, raising this attribute to 18. so can/should i put points into str to raise my carring capacity instead of my dex modifier or am i missing something out because there are way better gloves for my class (please dont be too specific with the answer/don't spoil locations etc.). i'd prefer playing "clean", meaning starting of with maxed dex out of roleplaying reasons.
i hate having to ask this kind of question but way back 5 years ago i was very frustrated due to them gloves.
are there other set-to-18-items which could corrupt my plans?

3) hide in shadows, move silently, lockpicking, etc. - which values get a positive effect by raising them >100%? i remember some off them reached their maximum effect @100% so keeping investing was useless? is there a %modifier for backstabbing that effects stealth shots?

4) can you search for traps and be hidden at the same time? if not, how do you avoid traps while being in cover?

5) can i reach grand mastery in a weapon skill and keep it after dualing into a thief or do they "get cut" during the switch? if so, at how may stars?

6) i wanted to use a long bow; are they vaild stealth attack weapons, are there useful ones (general answer, please give no spoiler like naming the top 3 weapons) or do i cripple myself by this choice badly?

thank you very much!

1) No, I think it only affects thrown (and of course melee) weapons. However I'd strongly consider maxing Strength as well since a Fighter->Thief is well placed to use melee backstabs, and anyway melee generally gets more and more powerful towards the end of the series.

2) Yes, this is perfectly possible but firstly you have to get the gloves (not too hard in vanilla) whilst having a low-level character who's easy to hit, secondly because you might want other items in that slot, and thirdly because there are tomes in BG1 which can raise your stats, potentially putting you at 19 Dex.

3) Backstabs get more powerful with level but your Hide and Move Silently scores shouldn't affect them. There are some stealth boots but you probably want the Boots of Speed.

4) Don't think so, and I don't think you do, at least directly.

5) You lose all your proficiencies when you dual, but then you get them back again when you exceed your old level.

6) Melee weapons usable by a single-classed thief only, for backstabs (though I think the rules vary between BG1, SoA and ToB, IIRC one allows more weapons to be used, but non allow ranged backstabs). Long swords of some form are probably your safest bet (or katana or something). So, whilst there are some good bows, non are viable for this.

thank you for your fast answer!

originally i wanted to play kind of a stealth (primary) sniper, but since there is no bonus at all for hitting while cloaked this seems to be a BS idea then?!

3) so all talents benefit form being raised above 100%?

5) so if i got grand mastery, dual class into thief and reach my ex warrior level ill have grand mastery again? for sure?

6) so no kind of multi or dual class thief can backstab at all???

3) I'm not sure about stealth, but for traps and locks, your score is compared to a value based upon the trap or lock in question. Thus, in BG1 most traps can be bypassed with something like ~80%, TotSC providing some more challenging ones. I believe that in BG2 there are much tougher ones, however.

5) I'm pretty sure. I seem to remember this being a bit wonky (I have a vague recollection that I once put my second class' points in the same weapon, then kept that - lower - value when finishing my dual). However, guides such as this one (useful, that) back me up so I think I'm just mistaken.

6) No, it depends on the weapon. If you use a weapon a pure-classed thief couldn't use, you can't backstab (someone else should probably corroborate this, I know that's how it is in TuTu and I think therefore ToB but I don't really play Thieves). However, you can always use a weapon which a single-classed thief could use, like a dagger or long sword. There are in fact mods which play with this, too.

Open locks, find traps, set traps and detect illusions do not benefit from scores over 100%.

There is a bonus to hit when attacking from stealth - even when no backstab multiplier is applied.

One thing to be careful of late in SoA or ToB is not to raise a thief skill above 254. At 255 you get a" recycle" effect so a Pick Pocket skill of,say, 260 is actually =5!

WRT looking for traps while invisible, the 4th level mage spell Improved Invisibility is a big help in SoA.

Trap detection and removal does not break invisibility, so the standard mage spell is also useful.

Stealth does actually persist for a short time after being deactivated, so it is possible to hide, search for traps for a few seconds and then run away to hide again (then come back to deactivate a trap found).  This isn't generally very useful if you don't know where traps are, but can be handy if you know a trap is to be found with some enemies nearby.

This doesn't depend on your stealth scores though, does it?

Yes. AFAIK the proficiencies you'll get when your old class reactivates is the max of the proficiency points you put into your first class and the proficiency points you put into your second class (while the first class was inactive).

This means that you'll lose proficiency points added while in the transition phase if you have already added points to that same proficiency before dual-classing. (Hope that makes sense.)

No - you're either stealthed or not (though it's obviously easier to hide with high scores).

Grond0 are you sure Find Traps >100% is useless? I just read somewhere it widens the searched area.
Stealth also should benefit.

I haven't heard that before. It sounds very unlikely, though someone with more knowledge of the mechanics of the game might wish to comment. Stealth will certainly benefit from scores of over 100%, given the sizeable penalty to your chance to hide from light (there are other potential penalties as well).

Is 99.9% sure, enough? :)
