OK, let's put it this way: if you're that much of a genius, you can figure out how to use a damn spell-check feature.

You must be under the impression I give a damn about what the grammar self righteous punks think. For the most part it's a complete waste of time....as long as youcan be easily understood and people don't have to spend an hour decoding what you said all is good and you can still bring grat contributions to society far more valuable than anything a grammar cop who thinks too highly of hmself can. Hell even GMag fits this description as for the most part he is easily understood.....maybe he'll go on to discover the next revolutionary thing that changes the way we live....propper grammar and punctuation not required. Having a unique view and perspective on life is far more valuable than thinking how great you are for falling in line with those that are too bussy holding their noses high in the clouds and look down on everyone who values something different.

Sidenote: though in a formal setting this would not hold true but BSN is far from a formal setting.

Fun fact for the grammar police.....and the regular police too I guess....

Do you know that what is considered correct in terms of grammar, punctuation and yes even spelling changes over time? You should look up a little something called Old English and see how that compares to what we speak today. Then we have distinctions between American, UK and Canadian English too. So the whole "omg you spelled wrong" point carries little weight. Not to mention that the game is over 170 years in the future....I am willing to bet that the English people will speak in 170 years will be as alien to us as Old English is to what we speak today.

I really do find it hard to care about misspellings. The point is communication:  Did the writer communicate the intended point? If yes, great. If no, ask for clarification. Anything else is a waste of time.

Unique perspective is great.....thinking too much of yourself or judging others for being better at something else is not. I speak three languages with English being the third and I have been a Marine for five years(seen combat and the whole nine yards)....the worst thing they do to you is overconfidence and the feeling that you are superior to everyone else. Only a person looking through an extremely judgemental view on life would think much or too harshly on a spelling mistake especially since with at least three different accepted English languages(US, UK and Canadian) we can have no concensus on what's correct and what isn't.

If you can't communicate well, you will find it hard communicating your ideas and getting people to listen and understand what you mean.  You will find it hard getting a job - and yes, resumes are rejected for atrocious grammar and spelling, even in technology.

Poor spelling and grammar usually means the intended point isn't communicated at all.

Too bad this is a gaming forum where we discuss sci fi games and latest virtual romances. If bad grammar and spelling is allowed anywhere it's here. His grammar/spelling is more than adaquet for communication you're just being a dick.

Unless you have a great ammount of skill....there are always exceptions outside of what you are taught to be acceptable and outside of what you are taught to be the norm. You just have to be better than anything they have thought possible....wioth billions on earth these kinds of exceptions occur on a nearly daily basis.

Of course, this had nothing to do with anyone's spelling here on an informal forum, but don't let me ruin your fun.

Aya, a discussion on grammar ****s without me? We can't have that.

So ... grammar is important. So is spelling. Interpunctuation, well ... sort of. But what's most important is being civilized. I can't talk with a walking anus for five minutes, but I can spend all day trying to talk with a well composed character, even if it means talking with erratic gestures and all that, because we can hardly understand each other.

So, people, cut the crap and in Andraste's name, learn some civil behaviour.

Problem solved.

I disagree. I see a great many more people who believe themselves to be these "exceptions", and honestly believe that their raw potential will magically translate into success. They are almost uniformly wrong.

If you are a tremendous developer but lack people/communication skills, all you will ever be is an individual contributor.

Happyjoyjoy: Keep it up professor. So ignoring my argument in favour of being a human spell checker is the way you refute my argument?

Well, if we are on the subject of poor communication. I'm feeling a little bit lost here. Wanna work on that pal?

All tangents aside, this is the point I was trying to make:

(granted, this is not a complete list, but exempli gratia...)

Quality Media (Video Game-RPG/TPS)
A-Story
--Compelling Plot
--Compelling and well developed Characters
B-Mechanics
--Challenging AI
--Systems for managing RP elements
--Systems for managing Combat elements
--Systems for managing Dialogue
C-Polish
--Spelling and Grammar
--Textures
--Models
--Animations
--Clipping
--Background
--Lore Continuity
--Game Manuals
--Voice Acting
--Level Design
--Placement of objects/cover in levels

As you may see, most of the work is to ensure that everything is polished after you establish the structure of the game. It kind of defeats the purpose when you neglect things.

That's an interesting theory, but I don't think you're correct at all. I've seen people with impeccable spelling and grammar completely fail to communicate their point. I've seen people with poor spelling and grammar successfully get their point across. I have also seen people who are unwilling to put any effort into understanding someone else because of a misspelling while trumpeting the power and glory of their own alleged intellect.

I'm not on the internet to teach grammar or try to prove how awesome I am by putting other people down (although, okay, I admit to putting some people down, but they totally started it). I'm on it to talk to people. I don't find it impossible or difficult to meet people halfway if they don't communicate in a style to which I am accustomed. I don't see the point in berating them into meeting someone else's standards if I am able to understand them. If I don't understand and realize I didn't understand, I just ask "Could you explain what this means?" Rather amazingly, this works better than bringing an entire forum thread to a halt just to argue that good spelling is ~required~ :wizard: for participation. This is a video game forum, not a university English class.

As far as the "Valient" and "Valkaryie" thing go, I'm mostly ignoring it. If they get into the game misspelled, it's not going to ruin anyone's day, you know?

Yet many exceptions do exist....for every real exception there will be thousandfold who wrongly think they are or should be one. As with any great character there are many more wannabes but you cannot deny the existence and potential. You can choose to cover your eyes to what is out there but precise grammar has lost much of its relevance if it ever had much. Do you really need a more jarring example than this preorder bonus advertisement about just how wrong you are?

I love how this all played out:

"Hey, anyone notice they misspelled a weapon name?"

"Yeah. They also did it with another weapon."

"ZOMG GRAMMAR N@ZIS ALWAYS LECTURING! WELL NOW I SHALL LECTURE YOU ON THE EVILS OF YOUR LECTURING WAYS!"

[Insert tangential flame-war here]

we especially like the audience members that participate despite adding nothing.

Thanks for that by the way. if you have nothing to add to the discussion be quiet. I find this type of whining the worst.

Shall I take the use of the potentially offensive construction "grammarians" as a second?

I shall.

Votes?
