SWTOR has it, but an mmorpg is more focused on hard-core RPG people rather than trying to bring in a bigger audience from other demographics.

Yeah it would be kind of silly if James Vega walked into battle rocking a t-shirt and some cargo pants...

Why would everyone wear heavy armor again?

As an side topic to the breath masks, has bioware ever stated why it has basically dropped this?

Because some characters are not trained or used to wearing heavy armour perhaps?
If you can move or operate efficiently during a mission, you risk becoming a serious liability for the team.
Thats why some characters might have lighter armor and protection when required, but still armour and protection of course.

This. I'd be outright pissed if Thane was forced to wear human light armor.

You forgot to say something about CoD and/or GoW fans, Michael Bay, and EA.

Oh, yeah: and something about not being a real RPG. Forgot about that one.

I don't mind that approach personally but Mass Effect hasn't really implemented it very well. I thought Morrigan had a very iconic look that didn't seem out of place. Miranda has her "iconic latex", it is certainly easy to notice too, but does it make much sense or seem in place? To me it doesn't personally.
The thing is, her clothes don't make sense either especially when in Denerim when you are supposedly trying to keep a low profile..
None of the other companions (the warden included for that matter) have an iconic look
Morrigan has an iconic look BECAUSE her clothes/rag usually only change once (when you get her new rags from Flemeth's hut).

Tell that to the guy with the joined middle and ring fingers.
Or to the thief who specializes in infiltration.
