But that's what make Alistair a good and plausible NPC.

He's a good and plausible NPC until you realize he'll romance a blood mage and won't bat an eye over romancing a dwarf or elf.

I thought you were basically saying that any straight man and straight woman can fall in love and it can 'make sense' as long as the writing is good?

Yep. Mind, I'm just talking about fiction and not real life. Is it wrong?

Yeah...that's not realistic.

I was not aware of the blood mage inconsistency. That's a big oversight off course and I agree that such extremes should be avoided (or at least they should have played around it but Bioware do not take Blood Magic very seriously when is the player the one who use it and that's a more general inconsistency). I see no problem toward the dwarf/elf thing (Alistair was not a racist as far as I can tell).

Only gays and straights count.

But the fact that he's romancing a dwarf/elf is ignored...it's like he completely doesn't notice it.

So it doesn't really 'make sense' in the narrative especially considering that human/elf pariings are taboo in the narrative and human/dwarf pairings are non-existent.

Your arguments are inspiring. You are right: I am stupid and not worth your time. You can even stop to read my posts and return to your sim date game... oh sorry, I mean DA2.

First...I don't see where in liesandpropaganda's post, she made any comment about you being "stupid."

Second...it's a bit insulting to tell someone to "return to [their] sim date game" as that diminshes their experience playing what is, in fact, an RPG. The romances in DA2 are optional, have always been optional. Romance is not a core element of the game but a a nice addition.

In Skyrim, all the love interests are bi, which is why that is an awful roleplaying experience.

Wait....if BW wants Dragon Age to be 'more like Skyrim' does that mean the 'all bi thing' is here to stay?

Yes?

That's not what I said and not what I meant. It's a little sad to imply prejudices on my part to dismiss my arguments. But it's easier I guess.

That's a general inconsistency of DA:O as far as I can tell. For all their talk about Origins, they had zero impact on the game. Still, he is a more memorable charachter than Fenris or Anders by any standard.

Have you considered that this might not have anything to do with his sexuality?

And I personally think Anders was more memorable.

So...what exactly is your issue with the DA2 LI thing again?

Right, but I don't see dozens of threads complaining that the DA:O romances sucked because race wasn't taken into account and they felt generic.

Not necessarily.

I heard some people saying romances are a bit odd as a dwarf.

And yes, gender is a whole lot of different than pointy ears or short stature. fantasy player races are usually some derived form of humans but you don't see many fantasy writers lining up to create a third gender although it would arguably not be any less plausible than some things we've got now (though you can occasionally see creatures with both or none).

dwarves and elves are humans with slight alterations but gender changes physical look and identity far more and is an example of reality limiting imagination, at least for me.

:lol::lol::lol:

it might not seem so to us since it's so mundane but I'd argue the one who could create concept art of the one gender he hadn't seen is more creative than someone who adds pointy ears and short stature to the gender (s)he is familiar with.

Yes, I thought about it. The point is not his sexuality as I've allready said. The point is the use of his personality in the fiction and the fact that sexuality is a defining feature of a romance charachter. If the sexuality of a romance charachter is just a reflection of the player mood, it does feel bland, cheap and false.

And I personally think Anders was more memorable.

Loved him in Awakening. Find him truly boring in DA2. Kill him was one of the few funny and liberating moments of act. 3.

As a straight male who only plays male characters with female love interests, I have absolutely no opinion on this matter.

I think other preferences these characters could have should be a defining feature as well....but you are giving those a free pass.

Look, I would agree if the work of fiction we were discussing was a novel or a movie.  These type of games don't work like that as they give some literary freedoms to the player so they can make their own story....that's why I play games like this.  If the BW stories were linear and identical with every playthrough for every player then it would be a different story (hahaha, pun).

What did he do in Awakening that was interesting?  He felt like an Alistair rip-off to me (but you like Alistair so I guess that's okay XD)
