Hello forum posters,

I have somewhat of a difficulty facing the optional boss Gaxkang. I do know that using Mana Clash with spellpower-stacked mages will trivialize the encounter, but is there any other way of easily fighting him without having to resort to the Mana Clash "cheese trick" ?

My regular party consists of PC Mage, Morrigan, Alistair, and Leliana, but can sub any companions for others if really needed. Most of the difficulty for me comes from the Arcane Horror form, while the Revenant form is no problem at all for me. Some difficulties that I am having :
- My tank (Alistair) does have a decent spell resist. The problem that I am facing is that even though aggro seems to be kept on the tank (Alistair) he seems to be repeatedly throwing spells on the ranged attackers from time to time, be it the CoM, Drain Life, Horror, Cone of Cold, etc. There is also some sort of AoE damage ability from him that keeps hitting my entire party from time to time (not Cone of Cold, probably Spirit Blast?) that I can't figure out what spell it is.  In fact, most of the time the ranged attackers will all die first before the tank Alistair.

- I have also tried using Glyph of Neutralization on him. I noticed that if the Glyph connects, the fight against his Arcane Horror form becomes much more trivial. The problem however, is that even though my PC mage does have around 80+ magic, the glyph seems to be resisted more often than not. If that happens then it becomes much more troublesome as now I have to somehow move him out of the glyph area or otherwise my spells won't be able to affect him.

- I have also tried using Glyph of Neutralization on my entire party, with the thinking that even though that will instantly drain the mana of my two mages (I can always use Blood Magic form in emergency), at least it should protect my party from anything the Arcane Horror Gaxkang can throw at me. What puzzles me however, even though everyone of us is within the Glyph of Neutralization's area, there is still some AoE damage coming into the party from the aforementioned spell above.

- I also noticed that as like many other bosses, the Entropic Death combo (Death Cloud+Death Hex) would take out quite a large portion of his HP, almost around 20%. The problem however, is that the Death Hex component (Morrigan is the one casting it, and has 70+ magic) seems to be resisted almost every single time, and then there is the 1 min cooldown. If I remember correctly, out of 5 or 6 tries, only one Death Hex ever connects.

In my situation, this gives me a much harder difficulty compared to facing the High Dragon and another certain named high dragon in the game as most of the big bossfight spells that I rely on (Entropic Death, Glyph of Neutralization vs mage bosses, heck even Paralysis Explosion combo was resisted by Gaxkang not to mention the difficulty of setting it up due to the cramped area) plus the constant AoE damage to the squishy ranged characters.

Also, I saw somebody saying that the Fade Wall shield have a higher chance to drop when Gaxkang is killed in Arcane Horror form, is that a fact or just rumor?

I'm not an expert but I put Alistair behind Gaxkang so he faces backward and put it on easy difficulty ha ha.

I didn't find the Gaxkang fight that hard, although I strongly recommend spreading out your party so they don't all get caught by one Cone of Cold spell (which is how I lost the first fight against him). Gaxkang seems to switch forms whenever his health falls below certain thresholds, so if you get off a lucky Paralyse or Petrify, you can effectively trap him in whichever form you find easier for a while as you whittle down his health.

I got the Fade Wall shield drop every single time I've killed Gaxkang; I honestly didn't realise that there was a chance of it not dropping. (Then again, perhaps one of the mods I've installed fixed that.)

I generally use Wynne to heal as everyone else hacks away at Gaxkang. Makes for a somewhat slow but generally satisfying battle. I disable any offensive spells Wynne may have so that she does not attract aggression.

The rest of the party is usually Leliana, Alistair, and Hero. Leliana often becomes the primary target of Gaxkang so I tend to micro-manage her during the battle as soon as that happens. Alistair and Hero both can use poisons, so if I have any magebane in inventory I wil activate that before I enter into Gaxkang's room. That saves a bit of micromanaging at the start of the battle.
