1. Amnesia: The Dark Descent - The game that inspired me to make this thread for no other reason that to avoid playing it. My problem is, i am torn between finding out Daniel's story and uninstalling it so i can once again sleep without the light on ...
2. Thief - Deadly Shadows - The Shalebridge Cradle - Whenever i think about playing Thief - Deadly Shadows again, i remember The Cradle and suddenly realise i have something very important to do ... like cleaning the house or writing a 2500 word essay for fun.
3. Silent Hill - This was the first scary game i ever played and will forever remain one of my favourite console games of all time. Having said that i have never played it again and probably never will, i am suprised i made it through the first time.
4. Resident Evil - You know that part where the dogs jump through the window as you are walking down that narrow corridor? I literally jumped out my seat and dropped my controller on the floor!
5. Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines - Love this game. Even after playing it several times the Haunted Hotel part still freaks me out every single time and i am always relieved when it is over.
What are your top 5 scary games?
Scariest games you ever played?

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. Seemingly one of the few games to use a sanity meter as a game mechanic. Disturbing atmosphere in general as well. The game takes great strides in making the "insane" moments unpredictable and shocking.
Amnesia: TDD. Needs no further description, just YouTube it if you've never played. Or buy it.
Phantasmagoria. Although most of the acting is laughable, some of the scenes are incredibly disturbing. I played it around 14, and it screwed me up permanently.
American McGee's Alice. A complete Mindf--- from beginning to end. The end in particular scared the living crap out of me.
Majora's Mask. Let's see... Giant Moon face that will obliterate you in 3 days? Check. Highly Disturbing final boss fight? Check. The majority of the game is bizarre and off-putting. Maybe not scary in the traditional sense, but it's still a very unnerving game.

1. Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth (there is also a sanity mechanic and light and dark areas, etc. this game seems to have influenced Amnesia IMO)
2. Amnesia: the Dark Descent
Really like VTMB but I haven't made it to the Haunted Hotel area you mentioned. So far the game is a lot of fun but not very scary.

Eternal Darkness I still have some..."fond" memories of. The best part of it was how meta it went the sanity meter, complete with interface screws and making it seem like your system had deleted your save file.
Probably gonna get laughed at for this one, but the first Dead Space also had some extremely tense and more than a little scary moment. Not so much in 2, but that's like comparing Aliens to Alien.
Amnesia I haven't had the opportunity to play yet, but its predecessor Penumbra was also really high up there in the scares department.

Well typically not horror games themselves, I find the follow games' environments to be eerie and creepy:
Bioshock
Dead Space 2 (still need to play DS1)
If it weren't for the mention games' combat system, I would have totally believe that they could be survival horror games.

So far I'd say it was Condemned: Criminal Origins followed by Resident Evil 2

I realize that this is more of a mainstream tittle, but the original FEAR scared the crap out of me on several occaisions. Not to mention a few of the enemies had me crouching in a corner, waiting for them to drop from the ceiling and kill me.
Also, my first truly terrifying game was silent hill. I was young, and slept with the light on durring my first playthrough...and there wasn't a subsequent playthrough. I now try to stay away from things with "silent" and "Hill" in the title.

1.Project Zero 1 &2(aka. Fatal Frame)
One of the old RE style games on the PS2 but instead of zombies it was ghosts and your only was a special camera which can destroy them. It had a distinct Japanese horror feel to it
2.FEAR 1 & 2
FEAR 1 was a horror/action masterpiece, while FEAR2 favored action it still had sections which made me jump(eg. the school, all the girl Alma flashbacks etc.) FEAR 3 wasn't that scary that's why it's not on my list.
3. Vampire:The Masquerade-Bloodlines
There were certain parts of it that were really atmospheric and disturbing like Ocean Hotel which reminded me a lot of the Shining:P, the King's Way house, the Giovanni Mansion and of course the Hospital:sick:)
4.Amnesia:The Dark Descent and the Penumbra games
They're quite similar so I put on the same spot on my list. Amnesia tended to have more enemies and there really wasn't any way you could fight them until the end, most of the time the best strategy was to run and/or hide especially with those water monsters.
5.Thief Deadly Shadows & The Dark Project
While generally speaking it's not a horror game, there are certain missions in it which did give me a bit of a fright.
In T: DS you had the wonderful Cradle, a former orphanage turned insane asylum with a bit of a sentience to it and zombie like creatures called the Puppets roaming it's halls.
In The Dark Project it was the Bonehoard, a vast mausoleum populated by a whole army of zombies and haunts

The "Romance Dance"? Is that what they call it these days?Viva Pinata. Scared the living hell out of me through sheer confusion.
The sequel is also worth mentioning as well. Bears in Mansions. They also honed in on the same unnerving atmosphere from the original Condemned. So far I'd say it was Condemned: Criminal Origins
The tentacle grabbing your leg was pretty surprising when it first happened. It has its moments. The first Dead Space also had some extremely tense and scary moments.

Dead Space
Dead Space was about as scary as Doom. Ie. really cheap "monster out of the closet" scares. No tension bulding and really repetitive, got bored of it pretty quickly, not scary at all.

Thank you for the list of games for me to avoid. I hate scary games.
Although I love the Resident Evil series...in co-op, of course. Silent Hill (any of them) and Condemned scare the bejesus out of me, and I've never tried anything that's more obviously scary (FEAR, Dead Space, etc.)

Silent Hill - I've never been able to look at a merry-go-round/carousel in the same way since playing it.
Fallout 3 ...the real possibilities for the future (and early encounters with Supermutants in game)
Eternal darkness...oh no I've lost my save data....
Project Zero series (Fatal Frame in U.S.)
Guilty Gear series...that's a girl, right? please tell me that's a girl....no!!!!

really? which part? i played that game so many times i had things down by heart and was timing things so i could get all the pictures! it was more fun than the first, i think, but the first one got the "more scary" vote to me. The girl that crawls out from under the house by the doll room, or the first time broken neck falls, or the one time that rope smacks you.
the third one was more creepy, i'd say. sort of scary, but in a way were you can totally see it coming, like when you crawl under the house. still scary but it takes a little away when you expect it, don't you think? of course there's also the bleeding effect when rei's apartment becomes haunted also
have you seen four player pod cast on youtube with brad? it's hilarious!

GTA4. The thought of being forced into a pointless mini game or carrying out another dreadfully boring mission with no save points became terrifying.

Resident Evil series, especially the remake of RE1. Damn Crimson Heads!
One of those Project Zero games had me touching cloth.
The original Alien Versus Predator. Uh-oh my trackers making noise....
