I forgot to mention the part leading up to the Broodmother in DA:O where you can hear Hespith and her creepy poem, perhaps scary isn't the right word here but it was certainly unsettling in my opinion.

That part was very disturbing

The Hotel in Vampire the Masquerade Bloodline.

Least to most. Please keep in mind if a game will let me roam at night, I will do it.
5: F.E.A.R
4: Bioshock
3: Fallout 3.
2: The Elder scrolls
1: Stalker, Shadow of Chernobyl

Not all typical horror games but scared me silly when playing them or watching my brother play them.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. had some creepy places, the whole environment already showed the evil within.

Dead Space had some disturbing sounds and the jump scares, but it eventually gets too predictable and annoying.

Amnesia: Dark Descent was really scary. Hell, this game scared me more than any horror movie or game. The fact that you can't fight back really added to it.

F.E.A.R. (the first game) was pretty creepy. Knowing that a little girl with insane powers is stalking me was pretty damn scary.

System Shock 2. Maybe just because I was rather young back then, but that whole thing scared the hell out of me. I don't think I ever beat it.

- Alien VS Predator (the original): I never finished that game, I was actually so scared by the marine campaign that I never even tried the other two...
- Resident Evil 1&2
- Amnesia The Dark Descent: I don't know if I'll ever find the courage to finish it...

Eh, I remember that hotel from Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines: it was really creepy; I think I had to stop playing for a few hours before continuing :D

Heres some fridgelogic for you.

Before you meet him on your way to Cubone's mother, Gary had a Pidgey he carried the entire game. But when you do meet him in Lavender Tower, he's standing near a grave...

When you fight him..Hes down 1 pokemon and the pidgey is missing..

Pokemon Blue - Lavender Town creeped me out.
Majoras Mask - Everything in that had game had a creepy vibe: the music, the NPC's, Deku trees, Skull kid and that ****ing Mask salesman especially.
Halo - 343 Guilty Spark (the level) built up the tension really well.
Dead Space - Just got the original and it's terrifying.

hell yeah dead space :wizard:  my all time fav game even more than ME1

i wish ME could adapt some of the realistic dark connotations from the game, i just don't know why but this game makes mass effect look like cartoonish kiddie game .. i mean  are you in space shepard? what about gravity, air flow or your oxygen level?

The scariest games I've played are all apart of the Resident Evil franchise.

Resident Evil: Zero

Resident Evil 1 - the remake

Resident Evil 2

Resident Evil: Nemesis

Resident Evil: Code Veronica

I lost interest in the franchise with the making of 4. The change of how the zombies behaved as well as the unfixed 360 degree environment ruined the fear and tension that the fixed camera views and angles and mindless zombies of the previous games invoked.

The first Alien vs Predator marine campaign. Atmosphere and no quicksave or checkpoints did wonders.

Exactly. And with facehuggers around, it got pretty tense quickly.:alien:

1. Amnesia: The Dark Descent - The game that inspired me to make this thread for no other reason that to avoid playing it. My problem is, i am torn between finding out Daniel's story and uninstalling it so i can once again sleep without the light on ...

5. Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines - Love this game. Even after playing it several times the Haunted Hotel part still freaks me out every single time and i am always relieved when it is over.

These are the only games I've played that actually managed to scary me, especially the first one (I need to switch on the light to finish some of the levels, especially the one with all the dark and claustrophobic rooms). But I agree, the Haunted House in VtM:B is the best horror sequence in the history of gaming. Very dramatic, evocative and inspired. No stupid boss at the end after all the tension and the build up? Brilliant!

Btw, imho a game needs first person view to be really scary. I cannot feel real fear playing in third person view.

Thief: Deadly Shadows. The Cradle, just The Cradle.

F.E.A.R, especially Extraction Point. The last act of the first game, and all of EP carries a fantastic sense of sheer desperation.

The Void. More a mind screw of epic proportions, but still quite unsettling.

The Thing. Paranoia is fun!

I Have no Mouth, and I Must Scream. God hates you, and loves to see you suffer.

Silent Hill 2. Sound design is an art perfected here.

Dark Corners of the Earth. Run. Just run, as fast as you can, and don't look back.

Eternal Darkness. Because reality is overrated. Embrace the fourth wall breaks.

Aliens vs Predator. Anyone who played the marine campaign knows what fear sounds like: the rising trill of a motion scanner.

Lavender Town is just creepy period especially with that damn music. Also hidden sprites reveal something quite diturbing apparently.
There was a whole creepypasta thing on this called the Lavender Town suicides, there were claims that the music made people commit suicide which was eventually debunked.

The Thief series... I´m so scared of the zombies in this game, it´s almost ridiculous.
Graphics have moved on, but still nothing gets to me more.
I think part of it is due to the fact that Garrett can´t just fight these things - there are items that hurt them, but these are usually rare and you have to decide carefully when to use them. And being pressed into a wall while watching a zombie shuffling by moaning horribly and praying that it won´t see me just never gets boring... worst level is of course the craddle with it´s puppets.
They are the only enemys that don´t make any noises, instead the lights start to flicker und buzz when one gets near. But you still have to be very very careful.
And they don´t disintegrate if you kill them, I´m always afraid they get up again...

The haunted house in Vampire Bloodlines was very scary the first time I´ve played through it.
I kept myself telling that I´m the crazy undead with an axe and other things should be afraid of me, but it didn´t help much.
After the first time though you know when things are going to happen and the house loses it´s creepiness.

Fallout 3 didn´t scare me per se, but there were a few moments which were horrifying in it´s own right, with the old vaults as prime examples.
I got freaked out when I was searching for the stradivari - on your way down through the corridors you find diaries and research reports that describe how the inhabitants of the vault were slowly driven insane and eventually slaughtered each other.

"Ah, so the people went berserk because of the noise that was emitted through the speakers!
Must be the one I activated before, I can even hear it right now.
...
...

HOLY SH**  I HAVE TO GET OUT OF HERE!!!!!"

In Point Lookout I was horrified when I first switched to third person after waking up from the drugs...
