Silent Hill 1-3. They don't really scare me anymore becauase I've learned to appreciate them from an artistic standpoint (plus I know what's coming) but when I first played I was crapping my pants.

The Path. Playing this game alone in the dark with headphones on. OMG. Especially some of the endings where you "win" (you "lose" if you go directly to grandma's house, and "win" if you stray from the path and find the character's "wolf.") I've literally jumped up from my chair and ran to turn the lights on. 0_0

Amnesia strangely enough, doesn't really scare me. :/

FEAR 1 was the first game I ever played that caused me to lose a bit of sleep.

It was the background music, really. If I played it with the music off it just didn't work.

So, of course, I tended to play it at 3am with headphones in a completely dark house. I'm so stupid sometimes.

I agree with Naughty about Dark Corners of the Earth. Nobody said The Thing yet either. That was a true horror game, and not an action game with horror elements like so many we see these days. (sound familiar to the homogenization of RPGs ?)

What about adventure horror games like...

Phantasmagoria 1&2
I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream
Haunting Ground
Harvester
Sanitarium
Blackstone Chronicles
Seven Games of the Soul
Personal Nightmare
Black Mirror 1-3
DarkSeed
Dracula 3: Path of the Dragon
Last Half of Darkness
Tomb of Zohir
Beyond the Spirits Eye
Shadow of the servants
Return of the Phantom
Veil of Darkness
Dead Reefs
Temüjin
Black Dahlia
Twisted Lands Series
Cosmology of Kyoto
Midnight Mysteries Series
Dark Dimensions: City of Fog
Dracula: Love Kills
Alpha Polaris
Waxworks
Necronomicon: The Dawning of Darkness
The White Chamber
Overclocked - A History of Violence. More of a psychological thriller than horror, but still gud
Penumbra
Gabriel Knight 2
The Void (aka Tension, aka Turgor)
Dreamfall
report

Dreamfall wasn't really a horror game at all.

It strikes me as one of the only true science/fantasy games ever made.

I've only played my PS1 copy of SH1 (Got the bad ending i think) and I love the soundtrack but sometimes idk if there is a monster or some boss creature or something around because the music can have sounds that sound like them. Can't wait to pick up the HD collection in march.

I agree that it wasn't a horror game at all, but it did have its moments here and there.  Much better classified as sci-fi fantasy adventure.
