She's not mandatory, there are so many opportunities to kill her in the game it'd just be bad balancing if she was at all mandatory.

The only evidence most of us have to go by is the Warden's Quest. Everything else is hopeful thinking.

And according to Warden's Quest, the game is extremely difficult verging on impossible without a dedicated healer, and the Spirit Healer specialization is a big part of that.

They did not take herbalism skill so they lacked potions.

I would think if you max herbalism on one character, and give Morrigan all four of chain1 of the creation school (healing spells) . You should be fine. Not forgeting the healing you pick up along the way.

Im not sure I'd try it on hard before I gave it a run on normal though. :)

I would say its more of a 'learn to play' the first time around that would make you think that Wynne is a requirement. Once you know how the rules work and combat tactics, you are less likely to require base healing for situations. Wynne might have been required for the Warden's Quest because of competition and first time play reasons.

I wouldn't be surprised on how short of a time it is before someone solos the game on nightmare after it has been released.

Potential Spoiler?:

Alistair is the only mandatory permanent party member. The others might join you for short stints when you first run into them, but none are required in the long run. So, no, Wynne is not required.

Why is Alistair mandatory? Can you play without him or are you stuck with him the entire game?

Besides, the Warden's Quest is not really that great to base opinion on. Its not like they were experts at the game. All you need is heal and various disabling spells to make it easier to fight tough/high damage monsters like Orges.

One of the previews of the game: http://fidgit.com/ar...wning_ogres.php

Describes how to beat two Orges without a spirt healer. You need to split the monsters to handle them one one one for as long as possible, flank the enemy to get flanking bonus to damage/backstab and use debuff spells to weaken the enemy.

Its seems it quite possible to beat the game without a spirt heal, it will just require more indepth tactics. Having a spirt healer lets you cheat a bit since using group heal isn't a tactic. :P

Alistair is not Mandatory!! But he will stay with you until landsmeet no matter what, due to story issues. Keep in mind you don't get all or even several named companions until later in the story. I'm thinking I'll probably be glad to have him around until 7th or 8th when I pick up Morrigan and Leliana.

When it was said that Alistair is mandatory, what was meant is that he will join your side, so to speak, and be in your camp until near the end. Until right near the end, there isn't any way that you can kill him or cause him to leave you.

I understand, read that other thread. Alistair is keep in your party alive for storyline reasons. In other words, Alistair has the legendary invincible shield know as PLOT DEVICE. You can sort of tell that Alistair is the pet favorite of the "big guy".
