Some of you might remember the former local vault roleplay server from NWN 1, Village of Creation. After years of talk and work Sniper Ready (some of you may remember him as one of the primary developers of VoC as well as the lead DM) and I have decided to put it into practice. I am extremely pleased to announce that a lot of headway has been made redesigning the module as a SERVER VAULT, from scratch, for NWN 2.

That said, there's still a long road ahead of us and we are in a closed beta stage. However, we are fast approaching a phase where we can open it up for the public to see and test. We don't have a time line, though I would estimate it will be no longer than a couple of months. In the mean time we are setting up forums for new and old players alike and encourage anyone who would like to help us beta test in the near future sign up for our forums here:

http://thevoc.proboards.com/index.cgi

Note that this is a temporary forum until we get a domain set up. It looks a little empty right now, but that's because I made the forum just today (December 30th 2011). We will be adding module progress within the next couple days along with some screen shots of our work. We may even do a podcast for fun at some point. I'm hoping this will generate some excitement with the old timers who may remember us from NWN1 and I'm hoping anyone left out there will decide to return when the module goes live.

Our goals for this server include creating a "heavy roleplay" atmosphere with high standards and enforcement of those types of rules. We have no delusions that we will be the most popular server due to this, but our view is that if we can build up even a small core of excellent role players the world we create will be far better off than it ever could be populated by hundreds of non-role players. Players will be expected to play to their character sheets and while min/maxing isn't necessarily frowned upon, if you cannot justify your class and feat choices in character then I would suggest choosing a different route (or server/module). Use common sense and you will be fine. We will be adding in-game systems to reflect our philosophies and views of roleplaying, which we will elaborate on as we go.

This in mind you should be aware that we do not intend to place many restrictions or regulations on our population. Griefing will be monitored but PVP can and will happen in this module. If you want to play a bandit, or highway man of some kind, go ahead, our DM's will not punish you for poperly playing this type of role. However, you must also be aware that you will have to live with the consequences of your character's actions and that due to our unique respawn system* it may not be in your best interest to start trouble.

*We have an NPC cleric who hangs out in the village and is automatically notified when a player dies. The Cleric will then leave his post at the temple and travel to where ever your character has died and resurrect you. If for some reason the script fails, the cleric returns to his starting point and runs the check again ensuring that you will be resurrected at some point. The point of this is to ensure that there is some incentive to play nicely (as you'll liekly end up waiting to be resurrected by an NPC) and cooperate with your fellow players.

Hello all, just a quick reminder/update

We are looking for people who wish to actively DM once the server is up and running, if you're interested feel free to stop by the forums and throw a thread up in the general section. I'm stoked to see that this thread has received so many views and our forum is likewise reporting similar numbers (in views).

:)

Don't be scared to register, I promise we're nice people. We've been contacting some old players we've kept in touch with and several have confirmed that they will be returning and hopefully our forums will see some new people! We are committed to making this module a success and we're progressing rapidly.

edit: We're also looking for anyone who would be willing to help us stress test the connection of our server.

Looking at your forums, I will say switch to directory mode for your toolset work and turn off autosave - these two changes will improve stability significantly (and make sure you've got a beefy system with lots of ram and a 64 bit OS).

Also, as you learn shading etc... in the toolset, don't be afraid to go back and re-examine your early exterior areas.

Good luck!

We're both running 64bit versions of Win 7 which has caused some grief, mostly in stability of the game, but that's been largely resolved. The toolset is actually more or less stable for me, though we did learn the hard way that you should be saving in directory mode after we lost our terrain data. Luckily we were able to recover most of it by creating a new file of the same name and then using Window's recovery system to roll the file back to an earlier copy.

Yeah, the shading is one part we've been discussing (my first comment when I saw the screenshots Sniper posted was "wow that's bright" hehe) switching over to the NWN2 tool set has been a real learning experience and I definitely sort of miss the Aurora Tool set from the first game. They're very different in a lot of ways and there's a lot you can do with the new TS but I can't help but feel the simpler system of using tiles/placeables would have made this process that much easier. However, the terrain manipulation in NWN 2 is amazing for creating realistic looking environments... So I don't know, it's a real trade off.

I appreciate the advice, you're a scholar and a gentleman.

But here's the thing; the module is being used in directory mode, and I have a quadcore i5 with 12GB of ram, I assure you my system is not of concern. The concern is simply that the toolset just does not work very well. :/

Recently, it was the fault of the autodownloader that created the setback. It has a quirk left in by the programmer. It's made things difficult, because I can't play from the same computer that I keep the module on. That seems a little absurd, I know, and I would have thought the programmer would see that, but apparently not. Oh well, will have to come up with a good workaround.

The tip with shading... very good advice. Will definitely do exactly that!

Solution to that is to use the -home parameter to specify a player folder. Why it was added, lets you play easily from the same computer. In fact it allows you to test a completely new players experience by creating a new player folder just by setting the shortcut, or have multiple configurations you play with.
