More complex than the do you like it question, where I'm relatively easy to please, is why I engage it in the first place.
Mass Effect marries a few of my interests: Sci-fi, role play, gun play, and exploration. That's enough to hook me into trying it out. The story's potential, the voice acting and presentation keep my butt in the seat till the ride is over.
Why do you play Mass Effect?

I got more attached to the 6 or so squadmates in mass effect 1, then the Mass Effect 2's 12 squadmates. I just felt more emotional when something happened to them and ME1 got me more immersed.
overall the story draws me in everytime.

I also wanted to add that the roleplaying aspect of it is great. When I played mass effect for the first time, I felt like I was really there. Being able to customize unique commander shepards and determine his choices, and in the first game, beliefs was really immersive. Not to mention talking with the swuadmates. I have to say that bioware games, especially mass effect, make you feel as if you are the character. Can't wait to see how they improve upon this in the future. Maybe kinetic voice canbe use to interact with characters rather than select dialogue choices. Something like that will add even more immersion.

Story and Characters, IMO the universe got a little weird between ME1 and ME2 with all the lore overhauls to explain gameplay mechanics. I;m not a big fan of ME2's opening, I don't think you need to kill your protagonist to explain a gameplay mechanic, as I think most of us hardcore fans would understand if it was explained to us that the level system from ME1 was completely overhauled and would not work well with the new game. I'm just saying this as my opinion, fyi.

To appreciate the writing throughout, be it the main story arc or character developments.
Presentation is a second. Great sci-fi setting with awesome audio and music.
And fun gameplay to boot.
And also, credit-stealing space cows. All that needs to be said.

The whole package: story, characters, setting, decisions, customization, music, combat... ME has all of them and is at least "good" at each.
I can't be bothered with most games because it always lacks something, and it takes a lot for me to get "into" any game (I'm very ADD). When I get playing ME, it basically consumes me completely.

I can tell you why I did. The Hybrid of RPG elements and Third-Person Shooting gameplay felt relatively novel from my experiences. The alien designs(for the most part) were unique and eye-popping, I'd not seen that before. The promise of your choices changing the next game.
I'll be buying the game, though sometimes I wonder if I still feel even close to the same hunger for it.

Story's alright, becomes more important now that I'm invested in it. Characters are way fun, and starting with ME2, its squad tactics are a lot of fun. Exploration (mostly via the normandy) is also a plus.

It's an amazing series(tbh). Why I play ME: I like video games, sci-fi, rpg's, shooters, choices(affect story-line), setting(expansive universe), plot, unique characters/species, great voice-acting, conversations in-game, etc.
Since the beginning, Mass Effect, has been an excellent game and continues to impress me throughout the series.
