The whole action/RPG shooter hybrid thing initially put me off, but I once I levelled up a bit I fell in love with the Adepts Biotics and never looked back (well I was a bit annoyed by barriers, shields and armor in ME2).
The setting and story drew me in and the gameplay hooked me. Now I can't wait to find out how the trilogy ends (though I am apprehensive about the co-op gameplay and combat focus of trailers so far).

For the same reason I've read the Lord of the Rings books more times than I care to count.
Yay, a fellow LotR fan on the BioWare forums!
Anyhoo, I love good storytelling with complex, interesting characters and epic adventure, whether it's in a novel, a film, a graphic novel or a video game. And the Mass Effect series has good storytelling with complex, interesting characters (well, mostly) and a big heaping serving of epic adventure. I don't number-crunch my way to the perfect hardcore-RPG character, although somehow I always manage to plan out my Sheps' abilities and powers to suit my gaming style. Nor do I play for the action-oriented combat, even though I'm actually not too bad at it. I love the story and most of the characters, and unlike a lot of people I've encountered on these forums, I've never met a character in the Mass Effect series I really hate (there are some I like less than others, but I wouldn't go so far as to say I hate them). I love immersing myself in the expansive universe and taking my Sheps on adventures with their squadmates of awesomeness. I also like RPing as my Sheps while I'm playing the game.
Yeah, I'm basically just a story nerd. Deal with it.

.......
......
......
...... and on to infinity to suck monthly payments or to get me to pay for an infinite ammount of microtransactions if I intend to advance more than one level in a year....or both.
This is why MMOs are worthless to me. I would rather play ME1 and ME2 over 30 times each(and I HAVE) than to ever touch an MMO. The aim of an MMO is NOT to provide a good story but to provide a meaningless reward system that will ideally get the players to play compulsively and sink as much money as possible in what would otherwise be an unenjoyable experience with no end in sight.
MMOs = Shooters = worthless.

MMOs take too long to advance the story and usually fail to satisfy. I am a HUGE fan of KotOR I & II but I will never care to play TOR. I want a great and satisfying story that is not dragged on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on.......
I actually kind of like the storytelling in TOR, or what I've seen of it anyway. I haven't had the time to even finish Act 1 with my first character.

No it's on topic....the point of the thread as per the opening post is why play ME3 or SP games in general instead of MMOs. So addressing either side or both is very much on topic.
As for TOR, I'm sure the benginning absolutely HAS to be great, perhaps even the entire first story or it would be if it didn't take forever to see it through.....a first impression is nearly impossible to undo and every MMO needs one if it is to be successfull and not have shut down its servers within a year.....but the story will never end or come to a conclusion of any sort and will just be dragged on for as long as people pay for it including long after they will have ran out of ideas of how to propperly continue it.....superhero comic books are a great example of what happens when you don't know when to stop.

My brother's highest-level character in TOR is at level 30-ish, but I don't think he's gotten tired of the story yet. Then again, he's a huge Star Wars nerd, so he'd like just about anything that had the Star Wars title attached to it. And I agree that most of the superhero stuff comic writers have been coming up with lately isn't all that great, but there are still some creative minds coming up with good stories featuring classic superheroes *coughBatmanArkhamCitycough*

I really didn't give much thought to the story when I was playing Mass Effect for the first time. Sovereing was cool and scary, but it wasn't until I got to Ilos and spoke to Vigil. Such a simple scene yet very moving. Im really hoping M3 will have some scenes like these. Also I'm sure this has nothing to do with what the OP wrote I just responded to the heading "why do you play Mass Effect?"

I'm not a fan of shooters; so I can't say I like it for that aspect. (I tend to spam the vanguard and sentinal class, because it's more melee.)
