Story, choices, characters, and so on.
For me, gameplay is motivated by how well it advances and portrays these things (duh)

I came for the helmets, but stayed for the breather masks.

Blasphemy! No one likes breather masks!

I happen to be hopelessly in love with breather masks. I admit to having derailed several well-meaning threads over the past several months in search of fellow "breathermancers" to share in my enthusiasm for breather masks. When news hit that a script file for Mass Effect 3 had leaked, my heart skipped a beat and I immediately reached for my trusty breather mask to control my breathing sufficiently in order to avoid reading spoilers.

Actually, just the other day I had lunch with several key BioWare Edmonton personnel. I laid down the cold hard facts in between bites of my unfortunately cold, hard chicken sandwich. I said, "lookie here, Casey, you've got enough money now to know a hit when you see one. Not only do I want you to bring back breather masks for Mass Effect 3 (banner forthcoming) but I want you to get that talented Patrick Weekes of yours to construct a character entirely of breather masks and I want you to name him Breatheasy and I want him to get his own room on the Normandy and I want him to be romanceable. And I want you to pay for lunch because I would have thought this were all common knowledge what with how harmonious the fanbase has been regarding breather masks."

He folded; enjoy the companionship of Breatheasy this March. I'm afraid in order to cut necessary corners he's replaced Shepard, but no one was really using him anyway.

lol bravo to you.Thats one of the most amusing posts I have read on this forum.Image IPBImage IPBImage IPB

Story, characters and universe.

Also, it's the best game series I've played. I never get bored of it.

Some games is like pulling teeth to get me to play more of them (eg. MMORPGs). However, Mass Effect, I'm passionate about and if you enjoy something that much, it doesn't feel like a chore to play.

As the old saying goes, if you're going to do something, mind as well enjoy doing it. If you're not enjoying it, stop doing it.

If people actually did this, the BSN would be very quiet.

What originally got me interested was character customization and the ability to pick what to say in conversation. I assumed this would afford some depth of interaction and moral greyness, but it didn't, really. Instead, it's party members that are all too willing to tag along for the ride no matter what, and a boring morality system that makes only extremes viable.

That said, I am attached to some of the characters, and I do appreciate FemShep.

The story, the setting and the characters are the most important to me in Mass Effect. The first game blew me away in that aspect, I feel sorry for those starting the series with ME2 and missing out on an amazing start of this franchise.

The first time I saw footage of ME1 was in the IGN game of the year video where it got nominated. I only saw a small glimpse and dismissed it as a generic shooter. Later I played KotOR long after its original release because it came in the Star Wars: Best of PC collection. I didn't like the gameplay but I loved the storyline and characters. Then I did some research and discovered BioWare made ME1 and that it wasn't a pure TPS but a TPS/RPG hybrid.

I remember that after beating the game I went for a swim (it was a hot summer day) and just sat there in the pool speechless. The characters and storyline were unlike anything I had seen in a game. You have to realize that I got ME1 on PC (didn't have an Xbox 360 at that time) and it was the first game I played on a machine somewhat capable of playing games. Since the Super Nintendo generation I didn't play that many games except for a bunch of unknown titles on PS1 and PS2, Mario Kart and Mario 64 on N64, and free-to-play games on PC that had low graphics requirements, such as Enemy Territory.

I have replayed both Mass Effect games an unhealthy amout of times. I tend to replay the games to have a save file in place but right now I have nine ME2 profiles on this PC and seven of them all have the same story decisions.

The ME series does several things very well, but it's the setting foremost for me. It's not obvious fantasy in space, like Star Wars nor the stereosexlessness of Star Trek. It has a strong babylon 5 vibe which is my favourite SF franchise. The galaxy is populated and the relays gives a reason for why earth isn't exploited. Humanity was a little guppy in a big aquarium, something quickly destroyed unfortunately. the races have a rich backstory, and doesn't all feel like rubberforhead aliens even though they pretty much are.
The combat system with force powers and shooting is well done and feels like tech rather then magic mostly.

I came for the story and I stay because of the characters. The main story is good, but the characters threads are what really make this game great for me, and are why I keep playing.

Plus, in real life I will never get to be captain of a spaceship.

Careful, the fan boys don't like it when they're called out on ignorance or delusions.

Characters/ Voice Acting, universe and Atmosphere. The character stories of all the people around shep and in universe intrigue me. The way the story is told about them and their way of interacting entertains me to no end. The idea of the universe and the whole traveling space concept is what appeals to me. The way it's represented is what grabs me. Sadly the plot has tons of holes in it everywhere in ME1-ME2 and Shepard doesnt really develop as a character.

The gameplay is decent, but never had the tight controls Ive expected from the series. It feels like a shooter with controls that arent quite there yet and when the fighting stops, it turns RPG when delivering story. The conversation system is a huge draw for me and Ive never seen such an in depth system in a RPG before ME1. This innovation alone makes Bioware games amazing. To be able to walk up to a character and have a 2 sec or 2 hr conversation blew my mind! I think that feature alone makes me return each game. DA2 did an amazing job with it and I wished ME3 would take a hint from it and add the personality mechanic to it as well, but I doubt they'll change what isnt broken for the last game.

Lastly it's the potential the series has to be the best RPG out there. If they expanded the world, added real exploration and branching paths, maybe made it open world, added co-op to play thru the main game, added side activities to do for fun, tightened up controls, added custom armor(ME1 style with custom parts of ME2) and loot back, it'd be dang near perfect.

Character/Dialogue Choices/Universe/Voice-acting

I mean name another modern, galactic-spanning sci-fi RPG that I can play... =]

This is also a reason why so many people will zealously defend Mass Effect from being "another action game" as these type of games are quite rare.

2 main reasons.

Story and Character Interaction.

It's also the only SciFi series I don't find stupidly cheesy (Star Trek/Wars)
