Mass Effect 1: It was a callback to the sci-fi of yore, involved decisions which aren't restricted by light-side or dark-side and had much potential for the future with the import feature. Beaten 20+ times.

Mass Effect 2: Gameplay wise, it was more fun than ME1 but only reason I really played it was because it was the sequel to ME1 which I greatly enjoyed.

Not grabbing ME3, it took everything I enjoyed and threw it out. It might be fun gameplay wise, I just don't care much about it.

Long story short? It's a Sci-Fi RPG, and I like those.

It's an interactive movie. And I don't mean that as an insult.

After getting into single-player, story-driven experiences in my gaming, I can't go back to movies. Movies are boring and totally out of my control. If I watch it again, it's going to be the exact same thing. Why do that when I can instead invest my time in Mass Effect, or Dragon Age, or Witcher, etc. etc.?

Videogames are far more entertaining to me now than ongoing TV dramas or movies, because of the interaction and use of choice to vary in playthroughs. I can't decide to make Star Wars end any differently, but I can decide what my personally made character in SWTOR does. Over, and over, and over...

I play because of the story and characters. I just picked up Mass Effect on a whim because I was bored one day. The commercials showed that there might be some cool choices so I gave it a shot. I was so used to side characters being relegated useless or with no backstory that when the first level came around, I fully expected everyone on my team to die. I've played shooting games like Call of Duty and Halo, and I've played RPG games like Fable or Oblivion or other games like Bioshock. That's what always happened.

Jenkins went down first per usual and then Kaidan was being pulled toward the Beacon and I was like 'Alright so that guy is dea... oh wait I just saved him, huh, that's weird."

And then I talked to him and Ashley after the mission and they actually had opinions and emotions. And their attitudes changed based on what I said. Then I met more characters and it was the same way. When someone did die, it meant something. They were your friends, they weren't just the main character's friends, they weren't just a part of the story. I know it sounds weird, but I had never ever played anything like that before and afterwards the other games I played paled in comparison.

That's why I play Mass Effect and all Bioware games. The feelings that it gives me trumps every feeling I get from everything else I've played. I love playing as a female space hero, I love meeting new characters knowing I'll actually learn more about them, and I love the choices I make which are less about morality a lot and just about making tough decisions.

Originally it was the lore, setting and atmosphere.

Now that they've pretty much given up caring about that ..... to finish it off I guess.

 Here's my top 5 reasons.

01. It's a wrpg. I'm a big fan of western rpgs simply because they allow for character creation, customization and story choices. So usually when a wrpg is released I like to get my hands to at least try it out whether its good or not. I've always been into rpgs, but when I learned original ones allowed you to make your own characters I ditched jrpgs instantly and haven't gone back since.

02. It's made by Bioware. Yes I said it at the total cost and risk of sounding like a fanboy. So far every Bioware game I've played, despite any of my own personal gripes and shortcomings, hasn't disappointed me yet. I love the Mass Effect series, I love the Dragon Age series, I loved Knights of the Old Republic and enjoyed Baldur's Gate 2. When I know a single player rpg is being crafted by them, it's going to be good (in my opinion).

03. The immersive universe. Especially in Mass Effect 1 moreso than 2, you really feel as if the Mass Effect universe is alive and vibrant. Massive codexes detailing histories of species, characters and emotions really come alive. When they decided to voice Commander Shepard, it added a whole different level to the amount of storytelling and immersion the game really has. I've played Mass Effect 1 many, many times (and 2 quite a few to a lesser extent) and I will say it never gets boring. Always a new way to take a character or set of variables to explore.

04. The sci-fi aspect. I love fantasy but sci-fi I liked much better. Most sci-fi rpgs are either tabletop or online, so its nice to have a fully playable sci-fi rpg that's not a jrpg or multiplayer. Spacecraft, aliens, commanding your own ship, all the stuff I like packed into one. Plus I really miss Knights of the Old Republic so its helps to stave off that sci-fi hunger.

05. The characters. Most rpgs don't have memorable characters. Mass Effect does. Even the crew has individual personalities (Dr Chakwas, Pressly, Adams, Daniels, etc...) whereas other games they're pretty generic. Even NPCs get fanbases with this game (just see fan threads). But of course, the squadmates are where the game is at and everyone has at least a couple favorites and even the most underrated, hated characters have their fans. You don't see many games with that kind of fan loyalty and devotion.

cause better writing and that the movie industry in general is not obsessed with violence which means more possibilities.

Story I love Sci-fi and Bioware has probably done the best Job at creating a Sci-fi Universe since Rodenberry.

A variety of reasons. Story, characters, exploration, and background (universe) for starters.

Couldn't have said it any better myself.

Much like everyone else, it's because of the story, the characters, and the sci-fi setting. That being said, I'd be playing TOR atm if my system hadn't ended up bricked - heh.

The setting, as in the universe they depict interests me. That means the characters as well as the story of the general setting. For Example, The galaxy wide political games each race plays and all the anthroprologic drama between them (its like a space opera in that reguard imo).

Also, I like the technology Like the space ships, space travel and the concept of things like a realm of physics that is beyond what we know today. To me it takes many things from other sci fi and lumps them into one convient package.Of the sci fi series out there this one has most of the elements that im looking for in one place.

And ofc i like to run around and be a space badass at time;P And Play my vision of a military commander in such a universe.

So I guess their are several reasons.;P

Funny, because they seem to be adding things that Ive always hoped for, gameplay wise, and story wise. Hell, even the RPG menus seem superior to ME1 imo so far. Personally I am pleased with the direction the gameplay is taking, as well as the story (yes ive read the old script, and love it;P). I guess people just vary widely in their views and expectations.

Because ME keeps me away from cocaine, works just as good but without the awful side effects.

Enjoyed Dragon Age, and though im not usually into 'sci fi' as much as fantasy i liked the way bioware did their rpgs so thought i'd try it, then put it in the cupboard after 5 minutes bored. Then 6 months later tried again, and it took hundreds of hours of my life.
ME2 i played just as a sequel, didnt like the gameplay as much and missed the old characters, it just doesnt have the same replayability.
ME3 is pre ordered though, i cant make any harsh judgements on something thats not out yet.

Pretty much. I'm expecting to feel the same way when I play the demo. Watched all the horde mode...er...GALAXY AT WAR...videos. Looked like horde mode with a biotic charge thrown in so Bioware could say "It's different! BUY IT!"

Read the script, and not only did I learn that the writing has degraded to a sub-par fanfiction pedigree, I found out that none of my choices mattered, and that they were only cosmetic, and that the hours and money I invested in the first were a waste. The second was a disappointment. All terminator-reaper-bossing-plot-and-lore-destroying bits of it.

ME3 doesn't even look like a Mass Effect game to me. It looks like a generic, brown and drab churned-out third person cover shooter with a broken sci-fi backdrop thrown in.

Of course, my opinion disagrees with the drooling masses that have infected this place, so I'm obviously wrong/sarcasm.

EDIT: Why did I play mass effect (1)? For the story, the scale of the universe. A unique game. I played 2 because of 1..not making the mistake of buying 3 because I have the lackluster second chapter.

Of course you aren't. The way you go about voicing you're opinion can, however, be annoying.
