When I first played ME, it was for the story and characters and also the setting. I loved it the first time through (adored my femshep) and played it again immediately just so I could love it again. I'd say, then, that the most important thing about ME is the quality of the story, the story-telling, the characters and how immersed you can get in the milieu and that's what I'm looking forward to in ME3. Why isn't it March yet?
OTOH, the reason I REPLAY the game, and I have done so around 5-6 times now, right through, beginning to end and intend to do so at least twice more before March getting characters ready for ME3, is for the gameplay. In my later playthroughs, though I enjoy the story still and the characters, what I most enjoy is the missions. ME2 is better for this than ME1 though I still think ME1 is a better game just because it does what it does more convincingly (tell a story). I've been increasing the difficulty I play at (now on hardcore - insanity somehow scares me though I suspect it's only the name) and have tried out different classes (Vanguard=hilarious, really hilarious: zoooooom-bam!; Sentinel=not finished yet, I'll get back to you though I love the tactical cloak; engineer=yet to try; soldier=not interested, sorry; infiltrator=was that the one with the sniper rifle? That was great; (my canon Shep is an adept)). What I've really been enjoying on the harder playthroughs is the challenge and using the powers and tactics more. One of the missions can be an evening's entertainment for me. The first time I played Grunt's personal mission on Tuchanka on hardcore, I finally downed the damn Thresher Maw with 4 seconds to go. 4 seconds. That was hella fun.
