 I recently bought Mass Effect 2 on Steam during the holiday sales, but I can't get it to run at all.

Upon clicking Mass Effect 2 and then going Play Mass Effect 2, Steam will hit "Not responding".  I've tried waiting, and even after leaving it for about 20-30 minutes, Steam remains frozen. I've tried updating my graphics drivers, downgrading my graphics drivers to an old version, completely uninstalling, redownloading and then reinstalling Mass Effect 2, reinstalling Steam completely, running Steam and the launcher in Administrative Mode (I'm not using UAC) and I still can't play the game.

1) Please register the game on the forums. This is not an accusation, but given the spate of users with illegally downloaded copies coming to the forums asking for help, forum registration is the only way we can be sure we are dealing with a legit copy. Illegally downloaded copies include hacked and modified files which could be either corrupt, or full of malware. Once its registered, we will be happy to help. Forums Registration here;
