Hello Everyone.

I have heard so many great things about this game so I finally purchased an Ultimate Edition copy of Origins.  I've never played before so I was looking for advice, suggestions, etc.  Ultimatley, I will find my own way through, finding the character I am most confortable playing but as a newbie, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Bear in mind that  I've been playing Mass Effect 1 & 2 for so long and have alwys played the Paragon path.  My fave classes have been Soldier, Vanguard and Infiltrator.  I am hoping to carry on the eqivalent to the  Paragon tradition as I embark on my Dragon Age career(s).  So I hope you can direct me in that regard.

Also, will this game grab me and take hold of my soul like Mass Effect does/did?

Thanks and wish me luck!

I'm in the exact same position as you. I'm a big Mass Effect fan, and I've heard so much good about DA:O, so I bought Ultimate Edition.

To be honest, the game isn't really that hard as some people say. What you need to learn is that pausing during combat is crucial, and I personally prefer to micro-manage everyone in my part, than use tactic slots. I too was really unsure with what class I should be, but decided to choose what would make more sense from a role-playing perspective, so I went with a noble human warrior, two handed. But as you progress the game, you basically get squadmates that are every class with almost every specialty, so yeah, you will always be able to kick ass whichever class you choose.

If you replay the game, you can sell extra traps to the girl in lothering.

Yeah I am new to the game also on my first playthru and tactic slots make a huge difference as they build up. Unfortenatly its hard to keep it completely paused during battle as when existing menu or casting a talent/spell it resumes the game.

I generally have 2 melee and 2 ranged in my party which seems to work well, one of those melee been a tank to absorb damage, The other is my mage character as a arcane warrior which is superb.

There are two things new players should know before they get started. The first is really easy: Dragon Age Wiki has answers to just about every question you might ask.

The second thing is a list of "must have" mods to the game. There are a lot of them, but the one that I think everyone can and should install is Dragon Age Rules Fixpack, which is pretty much a pure bug-fix pack. Best of all, each bug it fixes or each slight tweak it has to game behavior can individually be removed very easily without delving into scripts. The most important fix there is the haste-bug. Haste pretty much can't be used without either that fix or a great deal of careful study about exactly how to work-around it's broken behavior; used wrong, unfixed haste will actually *slow* your attack rate.

There are a huge number of mods available.  More tactic slots, better tactical behavior, character "relevel" (undo atribs, skills, talents and let you pick new ones), apearance mods (hair styles, no-helmet, body-types), major rule revisions from craft epic items to entire spell&talent rewrites.  Dragon Age Nexus has pretty much everything.

BTW, I'm pretty sure all those mods are PC-only.  If you're on a console, you're just stuck with the vanilla buggy DA:O.

Whatever you do, don't make your first character a Mage. (If you've unlocked the Spirit Healer specialization already before you hit level 7, playing a Mage is a lot less frustrating. Keep your eye out for that manual, or talk to Wynne a lot.) A Warrior or a Rogue is most effective in combat in the early stages when you're learning, which is less frustrating. Rogues can also learn a Talent called Deft Hands that will let them spot/disarm traps and unlock doors and boxes.

2 more mods which are absolute must-haves:

http://www.dragonage...file.php?id=928

http://www.dragonage...ile.php?id=1120

These fix a tonne of plot flags and dialogue errors.

Also, visit the Circle of Mages and Redcliffe as soon as possible. If that doesn't mean anything to you yet, don't worry, it will.

Giving presents to companions: certain companions will particularly like certain types of gifts, so try to work out what they would little. Little bit of fun psychology to play there.

The DLC The Stone Prisoner is, in my book, an absolutely essential purchase. Buy and activate ASAP (it only becomes available from a certain point in the game). You'll be glad you did.

Apart from that, enjoy! I think it's every bit as good as Mass Effect, though I am a big fan of that series too.

mage is probably easiest to play.

I will give my few reasons here.

you can stay at range meaning you should hopefully not be bearing brunt of attacks.
if you get arcane warrior you then become extremely strong defensively. combine it with spirit healer and you almost a god.
