They are fine to me, I think people don't get the fact that these two characters are the most scarred out of the entire cast, which is why they have a lot of deep feelings on the subjects they "whine" about.

As for the quotes I just posted
Of course, I expected no different, quinnzel. And thanks for that post sacred fantasy. That...almost helps...no offense.

No problem.

Just consider that not all Hawkes are interested in mage templar conflict. Some may even get tired seeing both insane Templars and Mages all over the place that they stop to care about it. Others may care more about their family and want to stay out of trouble. Some may feel they can't do anything about it because it's beyond their power. Therefore mages and templar dicussion may not interest them despite both Fenris and Anders have good reason to reflect their personality through such "talks". It's unavoidable because of how things going on at Kirkwall like blood mages, corrupted templars,  etc... which players get to see all the time but unable to do anything. So it's understandable if players feel that both Fenris and Anders's talk as "emo" or "whines".

IMO, Anders and Fenrus are two of the best written characters in DA2, and Anders, for all his whining is a key character in furthering the plot. I think the fact that they are both portrayed as flawed and desperate makes some players see them as weak and annoying, but they both, if you don't kill them, end up as more mature and honorable at the end of the game.

Anders is a whiner and a hypocrite. Good reasons to complain or not, when every damn conversation is beating into your head how unfair mage oppression is, it's natural to have a reaction of "STFU already, I get it."

Fenris is another extremist, but to his critic he's willing to admit when he's wrong, unlike Anders.

Anders can get tiresome with his constant flogging of the horse, Fenris is just.. annoying sure you've had a bad time so what... you'll constantly live those moments and let it colour you for the rest of your life? Its one thing to be affected by something bad, but to cling onto that bad thing and never let go at the expense of the rest of your life is just downright annoying. Both are well written and I find Anders fairly alright but I can't stand Fenris. But atleast they're not that void of a person Sebastian.

In general, Characters who have a strong personality tend to be hated on this forum.

I do not like anders, but that's for others raisons.

"W-Why are they so meaaaaaaaaaaaaan? ;_;" I sure wished I could've told the teacher when Anders did what he did to the Chantry.

God, I wish "emo" could be banned from the internet vernacular.

Anyway, not everyone loves every character. Lots of people hate Isabela too.
However, I've always found the calls for Fenris to just get over his years of enslavement and abuse, while he's still actively being hunted by his former master, kind of odd. And Anders did ultimately kind of go to the point of no return for me what with the whole terrorist thing, but prior to that I never felt he was excessively whiny about the plight of a group of people that faces widespread bigotry and persecution. I just thought he was kind of naive and willfully blind to his own faults, but not awful.

And as for Fenris' appearance.. well, tomato, tomahto. Some may say BW created a Final Fantasy clone, I say BW finally created a male LI that's visually appealing to a large portion of the female/gay gaming audience (speaking as someone who isn't into manly men and had to mod poor Zev out the wazoo to get him up to par.)

I like Fenris, personally. Not a favourite, but I like him. I imagine some don't because of the brooding, intensity, and the whole 'cursed with awesome' thing he's got going on.

As for Anders, I really won't go into it because it's been said plenty of times. I feel sorry for the guy, but not nearly enough to make up for his actions.

Edit: Them picking on Merrill does aggravate me too, of course. Although I expected it from Fenris (because he just seems to hate all mages), whereas I was surprised and disappointed my Anders. I get the impression he thinks he's trying to help 'save her from herself', but it rarely comes across that way.

People who are mean to Fenris should be instantly put on ignore, and written off entirely.  Anders, at least, does something worthy of potential anger.  Fenris is just an adorable yet grumpy elf trying to get by.

Both of them bully Merrill. That's a decent reason to be irritated at them.

Oh, well, I would concede that. There is no excuse for being mean to Merrill. Fenris gets an edge, in that he has a reason to distrust mages, but I generally refuse to let him come along for her quests. I had to make a male Hawke so she could have someone. (being female myself, I noticed I took a lot longer to make my male Hawke. He ended up looking a bit like Karl Urban as Cupid, which was pretty good, actually!)

I guess it's the 'can go with either sex' thing that makes people so weird about them. (but not Merrill or Isabela, of course...) At least, that's what I've seen, if I make the hideous mistake of reading what people say in such topics. (or comment sections on the DA facebook page, for instance. Some guy went bonkers there about Fenris's ability to pair off with male Hawke.) They seem to overlook that he only flirts with you if you flirt with him first, (and then pretty hesitantly), and that if you don't flirt with him, he ends up in an affair with the stunningly female Isabela. This means, only *you* can 'make him gay.' (and if I were a gay man, I'd be making him gay, to be sure.) He's pretty clear about never having had a lover, that he remembers, before you. I heard/read some guy fussing about 'Fenris's angsty flirting,' and I thought, 'Well, here's an idea: don't hit on him, make him think you're interested, or suggest you want him, and you won't have to worry about it, now, will you?'

I see both Fenris and Merrill as exceptionally vulnerable and lonely, and you become their closest, most trusted and/or respected friend. It makes for an emotional bond, whatever the gender. Anders & Isabela have both obviously gone that route before, but Fenris & Merrill seem 'yours alone' to me, whichever gender you play. So - as usual in such topics - people's fury says a lot more about them than about anything else. (and in Fenris's case, it says you hit on him first.)

That's precisely why they need to have a life on their own. At least, Merril get alongs with her neighbours quite well, I guess, considers she did comments about them even if some of her "neighbours" turn out to be rats.

As for Fenris, it's 7 years already. It's not like just yesterday he just escape from his master slave. There are plenty of thing to do arounds in 7 years beside being obsessive about slavery and mages. Get some job, makes some frineds, have threesome with Isabella and Zevran if he has to. I'm sure Isabella won't mind. Hawke will do anything in her/his power to help but constant bitterness over the issue won't get his/her attention especially when Hawke himself/herself having problem with the loss of his/her family which is far more important than the issue of insane templars and mages.

Anyway, for me, it's more about constant inner struggle to control Hawke as my character and my resentment towards one way interaction with the companions. The frustration of not being able to roleplay Hawke in a manner I could with my warden cause me to resent not only just Anders and fenris, but almost everything about DA 2. As a result I don't care about the world, the people and even family matter give weak reason for me to roleplay. My Character is always very important than anything else in RPG. If I can't create my character then everything will fail no matter how good the story and character is. That's why I don't play JRPG.or any RPG that doesn't have character creation.

Anders is arguably one of the best if not the best characters in whole DA universe. The fact that people dislike him is just their attitude - you think people liked Archdemon? Of course not, otherwise they would`t kill it - "ooohh, sweet flying lizard with puppy eyes....mhhhh"

I dislike Alistair too, because he is idiot, but i still think its a very well made character.

On the other hand Fenris, and Merill too, are like put in on last minute and unlike the other companions dose`t have anything to do with the main plotline (mages/templars, Qunari). They being just slapped in to have Elves in and shut the Legolas fanbase. I would rather they don`t do this again - if the elf dose`t fit in, just don't put it there and better spend time on something else (more different areas? more choices? better looking armors?)

I'm nice to everyone in DA 2. I always get everyone's friendship maxed out. :)

Anders' whining does get annoying though but I can't force myself to be mean to him, especially after playing Awakening a couple of times. He was my favorite character in Awakening.

As for Fenris, he's actually my favorite new character (well second I guess after Varric). I liked the entire party in both Origins and DA 2 (although Awakening had a few characters I didn't care about).

But in every DA 2 game I played I romanced Merrill. I maxed out Anders and Fenris' friendships first so I can tell them off when they badmouth my woman. ;)

Don't particularly have a problem with Fenris (though he can be a bit too much at moments), but Anders... I pretty much disagree with anything that comes out of his mouth.
