Fenris looks and acts like something out of a horribly cliche JRPG who has a complete disgust for all mages no matter how altruistic they are or how they use their magics for good. To him, anyone and everyone with magic is a sleeping blood mage.

Anders is a Martin Luther wannabe who can't get past his own prejudices about the dangers of magic and how Templars are (at the heart of things) a necessary evil for the safety of anyone who's not a mage.

In the end, they're both blind to their own ideologies which never turn out good for anybody.

I like Fenris, actually. He's one of the more legitimate badass characters, and he actually has valid points when he argues. Yeah, everything about him screams JRPG and he's basically the Dragon Age version of Wolverine, but he turned out a lot better than I thought and didn't clash too much with the new art style or thematic direction.

Anders is a whole other story. I hate Anders because I used to love Anders. In Awakening, Anders was one of my favorite characters. He was cool, funny, and laid back, a huge contrast to the other mage companion of that game who was a paranoid zealot with a chip on her shoulder.

Now . . . he's a paranoid zealot with a chip on his shoulder. He doesn't tell jokes. He whinges non-stop. He never once attempts to debate his position when anti-mage partisans bring up the whole 'mages are walking nuclear bombs and every single one of them ever in the history of Kirkwall has turned out to be a blood mage when the chips are down'. He's a murderer, a terrorist, an abomination, and fanatic with no room for compromise or debate. There's literally nothing left about him that's likable or sympathetic.

The reinvention of Anders was repugnant and Fenris looked like he belonged in a JRPG. Besides, both were wretched company...urgh!

Because people attribute modern day values to fictional settings where brutal oppression is the norm and expect it to make sense.

It doesn't, but people these days are self righteous about their 'freedoms' and think that speaking their mind automatically makes them right.

Eh I play attention to both of them and can see why people would be a-holes to them. They're both jerks themselves.

It's hard not to be mean to Merrill, several times, I wanted to slap her in her face. She's so stupid.

This is maybe the only thing I can agree with Anders.

Such hatred for computer generated characters! I guess some people just want a reason to rant, and if it makes them feel better to hate Anders and Fenrus, so be it.

I tend to look more at the dialogue and how it affects the story and plot, and I just don't need to hate any of my npcs, they all add more interest to the game... I save my moral judgments for real life.

I guess such hatred for a character means they left an impression on you regardless of how you view them, a mark of true writing and characterization too.

It doesn't,

That's right. It's fictional setting. Nothing make sense. What makes sense is real event like millions of people were murdered, rape, tortured and oppressed during Rwanda's civil war in Africa while 3000 US people died in World Trade Center due to terrorism. Now that's not fictional setting. Fiction mean made up. Therefore, since it's made up, people will try to make sense out of it. Otherwise what's the point of attributing non sense value to an already non sense setting?

Isn't that what are you doing too? Using your freedom to speak your mind as well?

Actually, it's more about OP using his/her freedom to ask people's for their opnions and since it's a question and in a forum discussion, I think people have the right to express their "self rightneous" answers. Don't you think so?.

And why couldn't they hate computer generated characters ? The goal is precisely that they feel something towards the characters, ( otherwise why to focus on characters ? )  not necessarily to love them and worship them.

" To Love a computer generated character " is exactly the same thing as to hate him. When  all these people in the character threads say:

: Sooo cute Ooooh, ooooh I want him/ her in my bed.  Ooohhh, with all their hearts toward computer generated characters. This is exactly the same. So, There is nothing wrong to hate them, or then, you have to question feelings toward " computer generated characters " in general. But I doubt you'll do that.

Anyways, The format of a video game is not totally different  from other formats, books and films where you feel something too toward the characters.

It is a fact that those who have a strong personality tend to be more hated however,  yes.

I agree, whether you hated or loved Anders, it would be hard to be indifferent to him, which is what I felt toward some of the other companions. That's good writing when a character evokes so much feeling, no matter if it's positive or negative,  which is one of the reasons I've been a Bioware games fan for so long.

Well, mainly because most of the characters in DA 2 are so friggin' one-dimensional. Anders = whining psycho. Fenris = 'I hate mages'. It's that simple to summarize them. The art style used in DA 2 was crappy too. I mean, look at Fenris, it's as if he's got anorexia. He might have been a slave, ok, but he's still far too thin to make it seem realistic. DA 2's characters as a whole contained a lot of stereotypes (for example Merrill, basically Bioware's version of a cute, naive anime elf girl, Isabela as big-busted, attractive woman to appeal to the audience, basically just fan service), which made it all so superficial for me. DA:O on the contrary had such a good written story that it actually succeeded in moving me at various moments during the game. The Paragon of Her Kind quest might become tiresome now and then, but it was really wel-written and remains one of my favourite DA:O quests up to today.

Or not. Her using blood magic never hurt anyone (well, nobody except for all the people she fights on a regular basis anyway); it was Marethari's and others' reaction to it that made things go bad. But that's probably a discussion for another thread.

Except making the deal for the Blood Magic ended up not working in her favor at the end, which is what everyone was calling her out on.

It takes all types, and all types of people play games. People who are writers, who love to read, who love characters, will inevitably love all the DA2 character, including Aveline and Varric. I can appreciate the love and skill that went in to creating Fenris, Anders, Isabela, Merrill, Varric, and Aveline.

But OP all you're doing with this thread is giving those who hate these two characters a chance to rant about how much they hate them.

No she's not. She's actually a very astute and philosophical woman who's very well versed in the arcane.

They were saying "You'll sacrifice people for your magic!" or "You'll get possessed!".

Both counts are wrong, and both Fenris and Anders presumed that Audacity -- the demon trapped in a statue for centuries and would continue to be trapped for centuries to come, unless freed by a powerful spell which isn't even known if Merrill knows -- wanted Merrill as his new vessel.

Marethari made the choice to do what she did.

===========================================

Regarding Fenris and Anders, I don't hate them. I don't particularly like them either, but that's due to my reasons:

1) For Anders, I don't like how the story handled him. Not the possession, but.... well it's complicated. Mainly how the Mage Underground was handled as well as how he came to the idea of what happened at the endgame. That's as simple as I can put it.

2) For Fenris, it's due to the inability for him to change his views on mages as a whole and point out to him that his ancestors had mage blood and that it's possible that blood helped him survive the lyrium ritual.

YA RLY.

Seriously, just look at her banter with Anders on the certainty -- and lack thereof -- regarding things.

That's enough evidence to point out that she's philosophical.

And frankly, I'd like to see this explored more in future DLC if we ever get it. I love cute Merrill and want that to continue, but I also want more philosophical Merrill.

Personally I think the last two lines in motomotogirl's post are about the most intelligent thing that's been said in whole this topic. Seriously.

Edit: I meant the last two lines of the post, namely the fact that the OP is just making people rant even MORE.
